Inbreeding depression, as commonly found in natural populations, should favour the evolution of inbreeding avoidance mechanisms. If natal dispersal, the first and probably most effective mechanism, does not lead to a complete separation of males and females from a common origin, a small-scale genetic population structure may result and other mechanisms to avoid inbreeding may exist. We studied the genetic population structure and individual mating patterns in blue tits (Parus caeruleus). The population showed a local genetic structure in two out of four years: genetic relatedness between individuals (estimated from microsatellite markers) decreased with distance. This pattern was mainly caused by immigrants to the study area; these, if paired with fellow immigrants, were more related than expected by chance. Since blue tits did not avoid inbreeding with their social partner, we examined if individuals preferred less related partners at later stages of the mate choice process. We found no evidence that females or males avoided inbreeding through extra-pair copulations or through mate desertion and postbreeding dispersal. Although the small-scale genetic population structure suggests that blue tits could use a simple rule of thumb to select less related mates, females did not generally prefer more distantly breeding extra-pair partners. However, the proportion of young fathered by an extra-pair male in mixed paternity broods depended on the genetic relatedness with the female. This suggests that there is a fertilization bias towards less related copulation partners and that blue tits are able to reduce the costs of inbreeding through a postcopulatory process. 相似文献

We have examined shoot and root growth and the concentration of carbohydrates in seedlings of a northern (67°N) and a southern (61°N) ecotype of Betula pendula Roth. cultivated at root-zone temperatures of 2, 6, 12 and 17°C. Three hydroponic experiments were conducted in controlled environments. We used three different pretreatments before seedlings were subjected to the experimental temperature treatments. Actively growing seedlings that were acclimated to the hydroponic solution for 3 weeks at a root temperature of 17°C, continued to grow at all the experimental temperatures, with an expected increase in growth from 2 to 17°C. However, if we started with ecodormant cold stored plants or used seedlings grown actively in perlite, no growth was observed at 2°C and only minor growth was found at 6°C. The highest root temperature always produced the best growth. The concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates was higher in seedlings grown at 2°C than at 17°C, and this is probably due to extensive incorporation of carbohydrates into cell walls and other structural elements at 17°C. We found no evidence for differences between the two ecotypes in root growth, in timing of bud burst, but shoot growth terminated in the northern ecotype in the first experiment because the natural photoperiod was below the critical value. Our study highlights the importance of post-transplantation stress (planting check) related to root growth, and that root threshold temperatures may change according to the way plants are pretreated. 相似文献

Plumage coloration is generally perceived as a static traitand therefore not a good indicator of current condition. However,changing of feather colors after molt does occur and may haveimportant implications for signal function and sexual selection.We studied longitudinal changes in blue tit (Parus caeruleus)crown ultraviolet (UV)/blue color, a sexually selected trait,by repeatedly measuring the same individuals between early winterand late spring. Whereas crown UV reflectance (UV chroma andhue) decreased dramatically over time, brightness and saturationdid not show consistent patterns of change. The magnitude ofthe decline in coloration exceeded sexual and age dichromatismin hue and UV chroma, respectively. Hence, seasonal color changescould have strong effects on blue tit sexual signaling. Between-individualvariation in the decline in UV coloration was large and relatedto attributes of male, but not female, quality, such as sizeand condition. Thus, conspecifics could potentially gain informationabout male phenotypic quality by assessing color change overthe year. However, the degree of decline in male UV color didnot affect breeding success because neither the number of within-pairnor the number of extrapair offspring produced correlated withchanges in crown color. Seasonal changes in the expression ofplumage coloration are probably widespread, and maintainingplumage coloration could thus constitute an additional honesty-enforcingmechanism after molt is completed. 相似文献

The high aqueous solubility of monoaromatic and some diaromatic oil components may hinder classical growth-based MPN enumeration
of bacterial mono- and di-aromatics degraders because these aromatics are toxic in high concentrations. We developed a microplate
MPN method for the enumeration of toluene-, xylene-, naphthalene-, biphenyl- and benzothiophene-degraders on the basis of
phase-partitioning of substrate between a biologically inert organic phase and an aqueous mineral salt medium. This way, it
was possible to maintain non-toxic, aqueous concentrations in the microplate wells. Depletion of aqueous aromatics by growth
of the degraders was prevented by the continuous solubilization of aromatics from the silicone phase. The method was validated
by MPN enumerating degrader cultures both with phase-partitioned aromatics and with tryptic soy broth as carbon sources. The
applicability of the method was demonstrated by MPN-enumerating mono- and di-aromatic degraders in soils of varying hydrocarbon
pre-exposure.

Pediocin PA-1 is a food grade antimicrobial peptide that has been used as a food preservative. Upon storage at 4°C or room temperature, pediocin PA-1 looses activity, and there is a concomitant 16-Da increase in the molecular mass. It is shown that the loss of activity follows first-order kinetics and that the instability can be prevented by replacing the single methionine residue (Met31) in pediocin PA-1. Replacing Met by Ala, Ile, or Leu protected the peptide from oxidation and had only minor effects on bacteriocin activity (for most indicator strains 100% activity was maintained). The sulfakinin (SK) family of neuropeptides are characterized by a C-terminal octapeptide sequence that begins with two acidic residues (most commonly DD), and ends with YGHMRF-NH2, usually with the tyrosyl residue sulfated. So far, sulfakinins have only been identified in insects and the present study was initiated to investigate if the family is more widely distributed within the arthropods. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) was isolated and characterised from acid-ethanol extracts of rabbit and guinea pig brain. In both instances the chromatographic purification was a two-step procedure of gel filtration followed by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The amino acid sequence of rabbit and guinea pig NPY was found to be identical to human and rat NPY as deduced from the cDNA structures. With the exception of the porcine peptide, all mammalian NPYs characterised to date have a methionine residue in position 17. This methionine residue is readily oxidized as indicated by the high degree of spontaneous oxidation of peptides found in the rabbit and guinea pig brain extracts and in NPY extracted from a rat phaeochromocytoma cell line. It is concluded that NPY is among the most highly conserved peptides and that NPYs containing methionine in position 17 are prone to oxidation. 相似文献
