Herbivory often alters the growth and development of woody plants and can thereby render hosts less susceptible to subsequent herbivores. We carried out field surveys and experiments to investigate how previous herbivory influences adult egg lay, larval feeding preference, and associated survival of the yellowheaded spruce sawfly, Pikonema alaskensis (Rohwer) (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), within crowns of black spruce, Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton et al. (Pinaceae). Pikonema alaskensis females laid nearly twice as many eggs, and late‐instar larvae consumed nearly twice as much foliar biomass, on undefoliated vs. defoliated branches. The major factor driving the lower incidence of egg lay on defoliated branches was a significant reduction in the availability of preferred size classes of shoots. In general, adult females preferred medium‐sized shoots, whereas late instars preferred large shoots; previous defoliation generally decreased the availability of medium and large shoots. In a field bioassay, late‐instar survival generally declined with increasing defoliation, which again corresponded to significant reductions in shoot length on defoliated branches. The tendency of P. alaskensis to avoid shoots on severely defoliated branches is likely to increase the time lag between herbivory and the feedback effects of induction and could thus contribute to fluctuations in sawfly population density during outbreak. Our results differ from numerous past studies of closely related diprionid sawflies in conifers, most of which have reported weak or positive effects of previous herbivory on host susceptibility; we attribute the observed responses of spruce to the unusual sawfly feeding preference of P. alaskensis for developing conifer foliage.  相似文献

From a mouse model of hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension, we previously found a highly upregulated protein in the lung that we named hypoxia-induced mitogenic factor (HIMF), also known as found in inflammatory zone 1 (FIZZ1), and resistin-like molecule alpha (RELMalpha). However, the mechanisms of HIMF in the pulmonary vascular remodeling remain unknown. We now demonstrate that HIMF promoted cell proliferation, migration, and the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) in pulmonary endothelial cells as well as the production of reactive oxygen species in murine monocyte/macrophage cells. HIMF-induced CD31-positive cell infiltrate in in vivo Matrigel plugs was significantly suppressed by VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR2) blockade. In ex vivo studies, HIMF stimulated the production of VEGF, MCP-1, and stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) in the lung resident cells, and VEGFR2 neutralization significantly suppressed HIMF-induced MCP-1 and SDF-1 production. Furthermore, intravenous injection of HIMF showed marked increase of CD68-positive inflammatory cells in the lungs, and these events were attenuated by VEGFR2 neutralization. Intravenous injection of HIMF also downregulated the expression of VEGFR2 in the lung. These results suggest that HIMF plays critical roles in pulmonary inflammation as well as angiogenesis.  相似文献

The increasing demand for drinking water and its stricter quality requirements have resulted in an exponentially expanding industry of membrane filtration processes. Currently, reverse osmosis (RO) is the most common method of desalination, able to produce water that is virtually free of pollutants and pathogenic micro‐organisms. Biofouling of these devices however is a significant limitation. Here we present a 3D simulation of RO membrane biofouling based on a lattice Boltzmann (LB) platform that we subsequently favorably compare with experimental data. This data consists of temporally (and spatially) resolved velocity measurements acquired for a RO membrane using magnetic resonance techniques. The effect of biofilm cohesive strength on system pressure drop is then explored; weaker biomass is observed to have a reduced impact on pressure drop (per unit biomass accumulated). Biotechnol. The effect of the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of the medium and the aeration rate on the lipid content and fatty acid composition ofChlorella sorokiniana was investigated using heterotrophic, batch culture. Both parameters had a significant effect. A C/N ratio of approximately 20, was found to indicate a change from carbon to nitrogen limitation forC. sorokiniana. Cell lipid content was at a minimum at this value and increased at both higher and lower C/N values. Low C/N ratios favoured a high proportion of trienoic fatty acids at the expense of monoenoic acids. Aeration enhanced cell growth, fatty acid yield and the synthesis of unsaturated dienoic and trienoic fatty acids, but reduced cell lipid content. The results demonstrate that the fatty acid composition and lipid content of heterotrophically-grown microalgae can be favourably manipulated by varying culture conditions.  相似文献
