The increasing demand for drinking water and its stricter quality requirements have resulted in an exponentially expanding industry of membrane filtration processes. Currently, reverse osmosis (RO) is the most common method of desalination, able to produce water that is virtually free of pollutants and pathogenic micro‐organisms. Biofouling of these devices however is a significant limitation. Here we present a 3D simulation of RO membrane biofouling based on a lattice Boltzmann (LB) platform that we subsequently favorably compare with experimental data. This data consists of temporally (and spatially) resolved velocity measurements acquired for a RO membrane using magnetic resonance techniques. The effect of biofilm cohesive strength on system pressure drop is then explored; weaker biomass is observed to have a reduced impact on pressure drop (per unit biomass accumulated). Biotechnol. Potential for fecundin to influence the reproductive performance of merino ewes in Western Australia

Four experiments were conducted at different locations in Western Australia to evaluate the effectiveness of immunizing young (maiden, 1 1/2 year old) and adult Merino ewes with Fecundin to improve their reproductive performances. The ovulation rates of immunized maiden ewes was increased (0.06-0.30) above that of untreated ewes in both experiments 1 and 2. However, there were no significant improvements in the marking percentages for the immunized ewes with the differences between the untreated and immunized ewes ranging from -16.4 to 5.8%. In comparison with untreated ewes immunization 6 and 2 weeks before the start of joining depressed ewe fertility by 26.1% whereas immunization 8 and 4 weeks before the start of joining did not significantly affect fertility. The availability of oat grain ad libitum prior to parturition and during early lactation did not improve the survival of lambs born to immunized ewes. In experiments 3 and 4 immunization of adult Merino ewes increased their ovulation rates (0.41-0.63) above untreated controls and tended to increase the proportion of pregnant ewes which had multiple pregnancies (from -2.3 to 34.2%). The responses at the end of lambing were variable (from -19.8 to 37.5% lambs marked) with high lamb mortalities occurring in some experiments. There was no adverse effect on the reproductive performances following consecutive annual immunizations over 3 years and the absence of treatment for 1 year did not prevent a response in the following year. 相似文献

Microbial degradation of phytol is often proposed to be the primary source of the acyclic isoprenoid acids observed in sediments, yet only a limited number of these acids have been found in bacterial cultures grown on phytol. This study reports detailed capillary gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses of the products resulting from growth of marine bacteria on phytol as the sole carbon source. We examined two strains of bacteria which were able to oxidize phytol to phytenic acid but were unable to further degrade phytol. The third isolate studied converted phytol to a mixture of five saturated isoprenoid acids. The C17 isoprenoid acid produced was of particular interest, since its genesis from phytol would have involved several unusual intermediates. It is suggested that this acid is produced by bacterial metabolism of the C18 isoprenoid ketone (produced from phytol abiologically under oxic conditions) and that its abundance is thus a sensitive indicator of sedimentary depositional conditions. 相似文献

The ability of three analogs of ACTH1-24 ([Gln5, Phe9] ACTH1-24, [Gln5, Ala9[Acth1-24, and [Gln5, Lys8, Phe9[ ACTH1-24) embodying tryptophan substitutions to activate the adenylate cyclase system of a bovine adrenal plasma membrane preparation was compared to the effect of the analogs on adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) accumulation and steroidogenesis in viable bovine adrenocortical cells. The results were not comparable. Whereas the analogs antagonized the ACTH1-24-activated membrane cyclase they stimulated cyclic AMP accumulation as well as steroid production of the cells. None of the analogs inhibited steroidogenesis of ACTH1-24-stimulated cells, but two of them, at very high dose levels, inhibited cyclic AMP production. The ability of the analogs to stimulate steroidogenesis of the adrenal cells half-maximally decreased in the order tryptophan greater than phenylalanine greater than alanine, indicating that the aromaticity of the indole ring of tryptophan is necessary for maximal interaction between hormone and receptor. Both the absolute and relative steroidogenic potencies were the same for several analogs when assayed with rat adrenal cells. Although only a small fraction of the cell's potential to produce cyclic AMP was necessary to induce maximum steroid production, the relative activities of a series of analogs were the same for steroidogenesis as for cyclic AMP accumulation. Furthermore, the concentration of cyclic AMP necessary for full steroidogenesis was practically identical for a series of peptides that differed widely in potency. These findings support the postulate that cyclic AMP accumulation and steroidogenesis in adrenocortical cells are coupled processes. The differential behavior of bovine adrenal plasma membranes and bovine adrenocortical cells toward ACTH analogs indicates that structure-function studies using cyclase assays may not reflect events that take place in the intact adrenal or in cell preparations derived therefrom. 相似文献

The effect of caesium on the responses of rabbit vas deferens to transmural stimulation was investigated. The tissue responded to transmural stimulation with a phasic spike contraction followed bya sustained contractile response. The sustained response was inhibited by phentolamine and guanethidine and thus apparently results from noradrenaline release from adrenergic nerves. Addition of 2-5mM Cs+ greatly potentiated this secondary response without altering the sensitivity of the tissue to added (minus)-noradrenaline. This potentiation was not due to Cs+ decreasing the neuronal uptake of noradrenaline, or by Cs+ altering prostaglandin synthesis. Addition of 2mM Cs+ significantly increased the amount of (plus or minus)-[3-H] metaraminol released from tissues in response to transmural stimulation (5 Hz). It is suggested that caesium potentiated responses of rabbit vas deferens to transmural stimulation by increasing the amount of transmitter released per nerve impulse, possibly as a result of prolongation of the action potential. 相似文献

Colicin plasmids E2 and E3 (Col E2 and Col E3) deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has been shown to contain, respectively, two and three EcoR1 restriction endonuclease-sensitive sites. This was determined by measuring the DNA fragments generated after EcoR1 endonuclease treatment by agarose gel electrophoresis and electron microscopy. The structure of heteroduplex Col E2-col E3 DNA molecules formed from EcoR1-generated fragments permitted a localization of the EcoR1-sensitive sites on the plasmid chromosomes. 相似文献

Palmitate oxidation by liver mitochondria from fed and starved rats exhibited markedly different sensitivities to inhibition by malonyl-CoA. In the mitochondrial system from fed rats, 50% inhibition required 19 muM-malonyl-CoA, whereas the mitochondria from starved rats were by comparison refractory to malonyl-CoA. Inhibition by malonyl-CoA was completely reversed by increasing the molar ratio of fatty acid to albumin. Results indicate that the potential effectiveness of malonyl-CoA as an inhibitor of fatty acid oxidation in the liver is dependent on an unidentified regulatory component of the system. The functional activity of this component is modified by the nutritional state, and its site of action is at the mitochondrial level. 相似文献

Summary The optimum pH for both the rate of production and yield of hyaluronic acid (HA) byStreptococcus zooepidemicus from glucose medium was 6.7±0.2 under anaerobic conditions. High agitation rates (600 rpm) gave superior results compared to 300 rpm.
