A lipid analysis is reported of a symbiont Prochloron sp. associated with the ascidian Lissorclinum patella collected from Rodda Reef, North Queensland, Australia. Phosphatidyl glycerol, monogalacosyl diglyceride, digalacosyl diglyceride and sulfoquinovasyl diglyceride were identified. These lipids together with their fatty acid profiles, the limited range of hydrocargons (nC13-nC17), and sterol analysis (chlesterol 27%) are consistent with a firm relaionship fot the new genus Prochloron with he Cyanophya.  相似文献

A chemical ecological model can be the basis for defining testable hypotheses concerning human interactions with plants. Selection by Aymara subsistence cultivators against toxic glycoalkaloids in the ongoing domestication of the Bolivian potato cultigen Solanum X ajanhuiriwas used as a specific case study of human interactions with phytochemicals. In taste perception tests, Aymara subjects were able to discriminate between concentrations of pure glycoalkaloids in solution only above 20 mg/100 ml. Taste panel tests of potato clones indicated that glycoalkaloid levels are important to the Aymara in determining quality only as part of a decision-making process involving two character states: too high or acceptable. Glycoalkaloids in potatoes are regarded as toxic to humans above 20 mg/100 g fresh weight. Among the Aymara, a breakpoint in the curve for glycoalkaloid preference appears to occur between 20–38 mg/100 g. This distinction is evident in the Aymara potato taxonomy which distinguishes bitter (luq'i ch'oke) from nonbitter (ch'oke) potatoes.  相似文献

The overnight urinary calcium/creatinine ratio is higher in the early years after the menopause than before it. However, the increment of urinary calcium/creatinine after a late evening calcium supplement is less in early postmenopausal than in premenopausal women. It is suggested that calcium therapy in postmenopausal osteoporosis may be best administered as a single late evening dose rather than in divided doses throughout the day.  相似文献

Anuran ears function as pressure difference receivers, and the amplitude and phase of tympanum vibrations are inherently directional, varying with sound incident angle. We quantified the nature of this directionality for Cope’s gray treefrog, Hyla chrysoscelis. We presented subjects with pure tones, advertisement calls, and frequency-modulated sweeps to examine the influence of frequency, signal level, lung inflation, and sex on ear directionality. Interaural differences in the amplitude of tympanum vibrations were 1–4 dB greater than sound pressure differences adjacent to the two tympana, while interaural differences in the phase of tympanum vibration were similar to or smaller than those in sound phase. Directionality in the amplitude and phase of tympanum vibration were highly dependent on sound frequency, and directionality in amplitude varied slightly with signal level. Directionality in the amplitude and phase of tone- and call-evoked responses did not differ between sexes. Lung inflation strongly affected tympanum directionality over a narrow frequency range that, in females, included call frequencies. This study provides a foundation for further work on the biomechanics and neural mechanisms of spatial hearing in H. chrysoscelis, and lends valuable perspective to behavioral studies on the use of spatial information by this species and other frogs.  相似文献

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) is an enveloped virus that uses undefined transport carriers for trafficking of its glycoproteins to envelopment sites. Screening of an siRNA library against 60 Rab GTPases revealed Rab6 as the principal Rab involved in HSV1 infection, with its depletion preventing Golgi‐to‐plasma membrane transport of HSV1 glycoproteins in a pathway used by several integral membrane proteins but not the luminal secreted protein Gaussia luciferase. Knockdown of Rab6 reduced virus yield to 1% and inhibited capsid envelopment, revealing glycoprotein exocytosis as a prerequisite for morphogenesis. Rab6‐dependent virus production did not require the effectors myosin‐II, bicaudal‐D, dynactin‐1 or rabkinesin‐6, but was facilitated by ERC1, a factor involved in linking microtubules to the cell cortex. Tubulation and exocytosis of Rab6‐positive, glycoprotein‐containing membranes from the Golgi was substantially augmented by infection, resulting in enhanced and targeted delivery to cell tips. This reveals HSV1 morphogenesis as one of the first biological processes shown to be dependent on the exocytic activity of Rab6.   相似文献

Background

Millions of cells are present in thousands of images created in high-throughput screening (HTS). Biologists could classify each of these cells into a phenotype by visual inspection. But in the presence of millions of cells this visual classification task becomes infeasible. Biologists train classification models on a few thousand visually classified example cells and iteratively improve the training data by visual inspection of the important misclassified phenotypes. Classification methods differ in performance and performance evaluation time. We present a comparative study of computational performance of gentle boosting, joint boosting CellProfiler Analyst (CPA), support vector machines (linear and radial basis function) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) on two data sets of HT29 and HeLa cancer cells.

Results

For the HT29 data set we find that gentle boosting, SVM (linear) and SVM (RBF) are close in performance but SVM (linear) is faster than gentle boosting and SVM (RBF). For the HT29 data set the average performance difference between SVM (RBF) and SVM (linear) is 0.42 %. For the HeLa data set we find that SVM (RBF) outperforms other classification methods and is on average 1.41 % better in performance than SVM (linear).

Conclusions

Our study proposes SVM (linear) for iterative improvement of the training data and SVM (RBF) for the final classifier to classify all unlabeled cells in the whole data set.
