Effect of the phase state of lipids on their interaction with cobra cytotoxin

Interaction between cytotoxin of the Central Asia cobra venom and dimiristoylphosphatidylcholine bilayer depending on its phase state was studied by ESR with spin label. A conclusion can be drawn that the efficiency of cytotoxin effect on the membranes depends on their phase state. Cytotoxin molecules are incorporated into myophile region of the bilayer, only if the latter is in the liquid crystal state. The interaction between cytotoxins and lipids of the bilayer in a gel state is in the main conditioned by electrostatic forces.     

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Fouquet) in the mirror carp, Cyprinus carpio L.

Mirror carp were infected with Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Fouquet) under standardized conditions. The size and number of parasites at selected sites on the body were recorded during the course of the infection. Initial exposure to 40 mature parasites resulted in a mild infection with 100% recovery after 18 days. Recovered fish did not appear to be carriers of the parasite. Exposure to 400 parasites resulted in 100% mortality between 22–25 days. The growth rate of the parasite was linear. Parasites were more numerous in the dorsal surface of the fish than in the lateral or ventral surface. The increase in parasite numbers during the disease was greater in the gills than in the skin.     

Phytochrome controlled acid RNase: An “attached” protein of ribosomes

The light-dependent increment in RNase activity (which is ribosome bound in cell extracts) is distributed as a gradient increasing from base to hook of lupin hypocotyls. No evidence was found of non-specific or of specific activation of pre-formed enzyme molecules following isolation, either before or after (latent activity) destruction of particles. The autodegradation capacity of ribosomes isolated from irradiated cells was almost double that of ribosomes from etiolated tissue. It is proposed that association between the bulk of the light-controlled RNase fraction and lupin ribosomes results from binding of soluble protein. It is not clear whether binding is specific or an artifact of isolation.     

Light and electron microscopic studies on capillaries of the goat cardiac muscle with special reference to the topographical relationship between the vessels and Purkinje fibers

The capillaries of the cardiac muscle were investigated in the goat by means of light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the following results were obtained. The capillaries of the working cardiac muscles were numerous, arranged mainly parallel to the long axis of muscle cells and formed dense elongated networks. On the contrary, those of the terminal Purkinje fibers were relatively few in number, oriented in various directions and formed loose and circularly meshed networks surrounding the fibers. Such findings were discussed in correlation with the physiology and functional morphology of various types of the cardiac muscle cells.
