Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain the abundance–occupancy relationship (AOR) in parasites. The niche breadth hypothesis suggests that host generalists are more abundant and efficient at colonizing different host communities than specialists. The trade‐off hypothesis argues that host specialists achieve high density across their hosts' ranges, whereas generalists incur the high cost of adaptation to diverse immuno‐defence systems. We tested these hypotheses using 386 haemosporidian cytochrome‐b lineages (1894 sequences) recovered from 2318 birds of 103 species sampled in NW Africa, NW Iberia, W Greater Caucasus and Transcaucasia. The number of regions occupied by lineages was associated with their frequency suggesting the presence of AOR in avian Haemosporidia. However, neither hypothesis provided a better explanation for the AOR. Although the host generalist Plasmodium SGS1 was over three times more abundant than other widespread lineages, both host specialists and generalists were successful in colonizing all study regions and achieved high overall prevalence. 相似文献
IntroductionMatrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) -8 and -9 are released from neutrophils in acute inflammation and may contribute to permeability changes in burn injury. In retrospective studies on sepsis, levels of MMP-8, MMP-9, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) differed from those of healthy controls, and TIMP-1 showed an association with outcome. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between these proteins and disease severity and outcome in burn patients.MethodsIn this prospective, observational, two-center study, we collected plasma samples from admission to day 21 post-burn, and burn blister fluid samples on admission. We compared MMP-8, -9, and TIMP-1 levels between TBSA<20% (N = 19) and TBSA>20% (N = 30) injured patients and healthy controls, and between 90-day survivors and non-survivors. MMP-8, -9, and TIMP-1 levels at 24-48 hours from injury, their maximal levels, and their time-adjusted means were compared between groups. Correlations with clinical parameters and the extent of burn were analyzed. MMP-8, -9, and TIMP-1 levels in burn blister fluids were also studied.ResultsPlasma MMP-8 and -9 were higher in patients than in healthy controls (P<0.001 and P = 0.016), but only MMP-8 differed between the TBSA<20% and TBSA>20% groups. MMP-8 and -9 were not associated with clinical severity or outcome measures. TIMP-1 differed significantly between patients and controls (P<0.001) and between TBSA<20% and TBSA>20% groups (P<0.002). TIMP-1 was associated with 90-day mortality and correlated with the extent of injury and clinical measures of disease severity. TIMP-1 may serve as a new biomarker in outcome prognostication of burn patients. 相似文献
Neuronal cell lines are important model systems to study mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases. One example is the Lund Human Mesencephalic (LUHMES) cell line, which can differentiate into dopaminergic‐like neurons and is frequently used to study mechanisms of Parkinson's disease and neurotoxicity. Neuronal differentiation of LUHMES cells is commonly verified with selected neuronal markers, but little is known about the proteome‐wide protein abundance changes during differentiation. Using mass spectrometry and label‐free quantification (LFQ), the proteome of differentiated and undifferentiated LUHMES cells and of primary murine midbrain neurons are compared. Neuronal differentiation induced substantial changes of the LUHMES cell proteome, with proliferation‐related proteins being strongly down‐regulated and neuronal and dopaminergic proteins, such as L1CAM and α‐synuclein (SNCA) being up to 1,000‐fold up‐regulated. Several of these proteins, including MAPT and SYN1, may be useful as new markers for experimentally validating neuronal differentiation of LUHMES cells. Primary midbrain neurons are slightly more closely related to differentiated than to undifferentiated LUHMES cells, in particular with respect to the abundance of proteins related to neurodegeneration. In summary, the analysis demonstrates that differentiated LUHMES cells are a suitable model for studies on neurodegeneration and provides a resource of the proteome‐wide changes during neuronal differentiation. The evolution of conspicuous colouration in prey is puzzling because such coloration attracts the attention of predators.
Anti-apostatic selection, in which rare prey forms are predated disproportionately often, is a second potential obstacle to
the evolution of conspicuous colouration in prey, as bright novel prey forms are likely to be very rare when they first appear
in populations. It has recently been postulated that dietary conservatism in predators, an extended feeding avoidance of novel
prey, would allow novel conspicuous prey to survive and multiply despite anti-apostatic and conspicuousness effects. We tested
this hypothesis for a novel prey type arising in an otherwise cryptic population, providing a direct test of whether anti-apostatic
selection or the predators’ wariness to attack the novel prey type is the more important force acting on the novel conspicuous
prey. We conducted our experiment in the “Novel World”; an experimental system designed to test predators’ foraging decisions
in a large landscape. We found that the conspicuous, novel prey suffered high initial costs of conspicuousness compared with
cryptic prey, since most of these prey were attacked during the first “generation”, with no opportunity to “reproduce”. However,
a subset of the 17 birds (24%) were following a dietary conservative foraging strategy and they were reluctant to eat the
novel prey. Interestingly these birds were not more neophobic or less explorative. Our data demonstrate how difficult it is
for the novel conspicuous prey to survive in cryptic populations, but they also highlight the importance of the predator’s
foraging strategies in helping to promote the evolution and maintenance of aposematism. 相似文献
Our understanding of the development of intrinsic reproductive isolation is still largely based on theoretical models and thorough empirical studies on a small number of species. Theory suggests that reproductive isolation develops through accumulation of epistatic genic incompatibilities, also known as Bateson–Dobzhansky–Muller (BDM) incompatibilities. We can detect these from marker transmission ratio distortion (TRD) in hybrid progenies of crosses between species or populations, where TRD is expected to result from selection against heterospecific allele combinations in hybrids. TRD may also manifest itself because of intragenomic conflicts or competition between gametes or zygotes. We studied early stage speciation in Arabidopsis lyrata by investigating patterns of TRD across the genome in F2 progenies of three reciprocal crosses between four natural populations. We found that the degree of TRD increases with genetic distance between crossed populations, but also that reciprocal progenies may differ substantially in their degree of TRD. Chromosomes AL6 and especially AL1 appear to be involved in many single- and two-locus distortions, but the location and source of TRD vary between crosses and between reciprocal progenies. We also found that the majority of single- and two-locus TRD appears to have a gametic, as opposed to zygotic, origin. Thus, while theory on BDM incompatibilities is typically illustrated with derived nuclear alleles proving incompatible in hybrid zygotes, our results suggest a prominent role for distortions emerging before zygote formation. 相似文献
AbstractThe inactivation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms grown on glass under high shear stress and exposed to a range of dissolved ozone concentrations (2, 5 and 7?ppm) at 10 and 20?min was investigated. The regression equation, log reduction (biofilm)?=?0.64?+?0.59×(C – 2)?+?0.33×(T – 10), described the dependence of biofilm inactivation on the dissolved ozone concentration (C, ppm) and contact time (T, min). The predicted D-values were 11.1, 5.7 and 2.2?min at 2, 5 and 7?ppm, respectively. Inactivation of biofilms grown on various surfaces was tested at a single dissolved ozone concentration of 5?ppm and a single exposure time of 20?min. Biofilms grown on plastic materials showed inactivation results similar to that of biofilms on glass, while biofilms grown on ceramics were statistically significantly more difficult to inactivate, suggesting the importance of utilizing non-porous materials in industrial and clinical settings. 相似文献
At a given level of serum cholesterol, patients with T2D have an increased risk of developing atherosclerosis compared with nondiabetic subjects. We hypothesized that T2D patients have an increased interstitial fluid (IF)-to-serum gradient ratio for LDL, due to leakage over the vascular wall. Therefore, lipoprotein profiles in serum and IF from 35 T2D patients and 35 healthy controls were assayed using fast performance liquid chromatography. The IF-to-serum gradients for VLDL and LDL cholesterol, as well as for apoB, were clearly reduced in T2D patients compared with healthy controls. No such differences were observed for HDL cholesterol. Contrary to our hypothesis, the atherogenic VLDL and LDL particles were not increased in IF from diabetic patients. Instead, they were relatively sparser than in healthy controls. The most probable explanation to our unexpected finding is that these lipoproteins are more susceptible to retainment in the extravascular space of these patients, reflecting a more active uptake by, or adhesion to, tissue cells, including macrophages in the vascular wall. Further studies are warranted to further characterize the mechanisms underlying these observations, which may be highly relevant for the understanding of why the propensity to develop atherosclerosis is increased in T2D. 相似文献
Mechanical stimulation can regulate cellular behavior, e.g., differentiation, proliferation, matrix production and mineralization. To apply fluid-induced wall shear stress (WSS) on cells, perfusion bioreactors have been commonly used in tissue engineering experiments. The WSS on cells depends on the nature of the micro-fluidic environment within scaffolds under medium perfusion. Simulating the fluidic environment within scaffolds will be important for gaining a better insight into the actual mechanical stimulation on cells in a tissue engineering experiment. However, biomaterial scaffolds used in tissue engineering experiments typically have highly irregular pore geometries. This complexity in scaffold geometry implies high computational costs for simulating the precise fluidic environment within the scaffolds. In this study, we propose a low-computational cost and feasible technique for quantifying the micro-fluidic environment within the scaffolds, which have highly irregular pore geometries. This technique is based on a multiscale computational fluid dynamics approach. It is demonstrated that this approach can capture the WSS distribution in most regions within the scaffold. Importantly, the central process unit time needed to run the model is considerably low.
