Ecosystem Restoration of Jhum Fallows in Northeast India: Microbial C and N Along Altitudinal and Successional Gradients 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Abstract To characterize the altitudinal and successional trends in microbial biomass and to understand their role in soil nutrient dynamics during the aggradation phase (vegetation recovery) of abandoned shifting cultivation systems, we determined the soil properties and microbial C and N in jhum (slash‐and‐burn) cultivation systems at different altitudes and 1‐, 7‐, and 16‐year‐old fallow agricultural lands at lower and higher altitudes in the northeastern Indian hills. Density of ground vegetation was lower in the undisturbed forest than in the jhum fallows. In general, 1‐year jhum fallow had greater herbaceous vegetation both at lower and higher altitudes. Although woody plants were observed in 7‐ and 16‐year‐old jhum fallows, their density was highest in the forest. Soil moisture, organic C, and total N also increased gradually with increasing altitude and progressive secondary succession. Soil pH showed a negative correlation with altitude (as also confounded by soil type) and fallow age. Both microbial C and N had a close correlation with altitude and fallow age. Contribution of microbial C to soil organic C was 2.0–2.6% and microbial N to total N 1.4–2.2% in jhum fields, 2.4–4.3% and 1.2–2.1%, respectively, in jhum fallows, and 2.5–2.9% and 1.6–1.9% in the forests. Microbial C and N showed a negative correlation with herbaceous plant density. Microbial biomass in the jhum fallows and forest stands had a positive relationship with woody vegetation. Along an altitudinal and/or successional gradient, microbial C and N were positively correlated with water‐holding capacity, soil moisture, organic C, and total N and negatively correlated with soil pH. Microbial C and N were positively correlated with each other. Therefore, the study suggests that the altitudinal and successional dynamics of microbial C and N are linked to, among other properties, soil organic matter and total nitrogen contents in the soil during community development after land abandonment from shifting cultivation. 相似文献

Inundation of evolutionary markers expedited in Human Genome Project and 1000 Genome Consortium has necessitated pruning of redundant and dependent variables. Various computational tools based on machine-learning and data-mining methods like feature selection/extraction have been proposed to escape the curse of dimensionality in large datasets. Incidentally, evolutionary studies, primarily based on sequentially evolved variations have remained un-facilitated by such advances till date. Here, we present a novel approach of recursive feature selection for hierarchical clustering of Y-chromosomal SNPs/haplogroups to select a minimal set of independent markers, sufficient to infer population structure as precisely as deduced by a larger number of evolutionary markers. To validate the applicability of our approach, we optimally designed MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry-based multiplex to accommodate independent Y-chromosomal markers in a single multiplex and genotyped two geographically distinct Indian populations. An analysis of 105 world-wide populations reflected that 15 independent variations/markers were optimal in defining population structure parameters, such as FST, molecular variance and correlation-based relationship. A subsequent addition of randomly selected markers had a negligible effect (close to zero, i.e. 1 × 10−3) on these parameters. The study proves efficient in tracing complex population structures and deriving relationships among world-wide populations in a cost-effective and expedient manner. 相似文献

Objective
Our objectives were: to assess the QOL of Brazilian adolescents with epilepsy with a specific QOL assessment tool; to compare the adolescents with epilepsy and healthy adolescents using a generic QOL assessment tool; to correlate the 2 different QOL assessment tools (the generic and the epilepsy-specific); and to correlate QOL scores of the adolescents with epilepsy obtained by both tools with physical, psychological and social variables of the disease.Methods
Fifty subjects (case group) attending the outpatient clinic of epilepsy of the Clinics Hospital of UNICAMP, Campinas-SP, answered the Brazilian version of the QOL inventory for adolescents with epilepsy - QOLIE-AD-48 and the QOL Questionnaire - WHOQOL – BREF – Portuguese version. Fifty-one subjects (control group) from public schools in Campinas-SP answered only the WHOQOL-BREF.Results
The results showed that adolescents with epilepsy presented a good score of QOL in both tools; overall scores for both groups with WHOQOL-BREF were good, but a statistically significant difference was seen with regards to the Psychological domain of the WHOQOL-BREF favoring the control group. Significant correlations between QOLIE-AD-48 Total and WHOQOL domains were found. Adolescents that were considered seizure-free (P = 0.001), had good perception of seizure control (P = 0.012) and had not had occurrence of seizures in public places (P = 0.001) presented better QOL scores.Conclusions
Brazilian adolescents with epilepsy may present good QOL scores when they themselves consider the disease as under control; physical, social and especially psychological variables associated to the disease may play an important role in these results. As a generic QOL tool, WHOQOL-BREF was sufficient to allow for a comparison between chronic disease bearers and healthy adolescents and showed that the gap in QOL between both populations is not as extensive as once was thought, probably due to better support and adaptation to the disease. 相似文献74.

β-Amylase finds application in food and pharmaceutical industries. Functionalized graphene sheets were customised as a matrix for covalent immobilization of Fenugreek β-amylase using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. The factors affecting the process were optimized using Response Surface Methodology based Box-Behnken design of experiment which resulted in 84% immobilization efficiency. Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM, TEM) and Fourier Tansform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were employed for the purpose of characterization of attachment of enzyme on the graphene. The enzyme kinetic studies were carried out for obtaining best catalytic performance and enhanced reusability. Optimum temperature remained unchanged, whereas optimum pH showed shift towards acidic range for immobilized enzyme. Increase in thermal stability of immobilized enzyme and non-toxic nature of functionalized graphene can be exploited for production of maltose in food and pharmaceutical industries. 相似文献

A balance between the synthesis and degradation of active proteins governs diverse cellular processes in plants, spanning from cell‐cycle progression and circadian rhythm to the outcome of several hormone signalling pathways. Ubiquitin‐mediated post‐translational modification determines the degradative fate of the target proteins, thereby altering the output of cellular processes. An equally important, and perhaps under‐appreciated, aspect of this pathway is the antagonistic process of de‐ubiquitination. De‐ubiquitinases (DUBs), a group of processing enzymes, play an important role in maintaining cellular ubiquitin homeostasis by hydrolyzing ubiquitin poly‐proteins and free poly‐ubiquitin chains into mono‐ubiquitin. Further, DUBs rescue the cellular proteins from 26S proteasome‐mediated degradation to their active form by cleaving the poly‐ubiquitin chain from the target protein. Any perturbation in DUB activity is likely to affect proteostasis and downstream cellular processes. This review illustrates recent findings on the biological significance and mechanisms of action of the DUBs in Arabidopsis thaliana, with an emphasis on ubiquitin‐specific proteases (UBPs), the largest family among the DUBs. We focus on the putative roles of various protein–protein interaction interfaces in DUBs and their generalized function in ubiquitin recycling, along with their pre‐eminent role in plant development. 相似文献

Wet tropical forest trees display a wide range of leaf phenology dynamics. However, the interrelation between deciduousness, water status, and leaf and stem characteristics have been poorly investigated compared with dry forests. We studied wet forest trees to answer the following questions: (1) do water regulation modes (iso/anisohydric behavior) of evergreen species differ from those found in deciduous species? (2) Does leaf water potential (ΨL) influences leaffall and emergence dynamics? (3) Are leaf and stem characteristics consistent across evergreen and deciduous trees? We evaluated vegetative phenology, ΨL, and leaf and stem characteristics of six evergreen and three deciduous species monthly for 2 yr. Species exhibited different leaffall and emergence dynamics, as well as different water regulation modes, independent of their deciduousness. Thus, the relationship between leaf phenology and water regulation behaviors appears to be a species‐specific property rather than a functional group attribute. ΨL had no direct influence on the dynamics of leaffall and/or emergence, indicating that this process is not modulated by water availability alone. Individual groups of evergreen and deciduous species could not be identified using principal component analysis (PCA), but a decoupling was observed in the leaf and stem economics spectra. The lack of an interrelation between deciduousness and iso/anisohydry, as well as the independence of leaf and stem trade‐offs, emphasizes that more systematic measurements of vegetative phenology and ecophysiological characteristics are necessary to advance our knowledge of leaf habit and water regulation behaviors based on the functional traits of wet forest plants. 相似文献

Chemokine receptors CXCR7 and CXCR4 bind to the same ligand stromal cell derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1α/CXCL12). We assessed the downstream signaling pathways mediated by CXCL12-CXCR7 interaction in Jurkat T cells. All experiments were carried out after functionally blocking the CXCR4 receptor. CXCL12, on binding CXCR7, induced phosphorylation of extra cellular regulated protein kinases (ERK 1/2) and Akt. Selective inhibition of each signal demonstrated that phosphorylated ERK 1/2 is essential for chemotaxis and survival of T cells whereas activation of Akt promotes only cell survival. Another interesting finding of this study is that CXCL12-CXCR7 interaction under normal physiological conditions does not activate the p38 pathway. Furthermore, we observed that the CXCL12 signaling via CXCR7 is Giα independent. Our findings suggest that CXCR7 promotes cell survival and does not induce cell death in T cells. The CXCL12 signaling via CXCR7 may be crucial in determining the fate of the activated T cells. 相似文献

The intestinal uptake rate of oxalate (mumoles/h/g tissue wt.) in castrated male (CM) rats, CM rats administered estradiol, and female (F) rats was 1.8, 1.4 and 1.3 times higher than that of male rats, whereas castrated female (CF) rats and CF rats administered testosterone absorbed oxalate at a rate similar to F rats, thereby, suggesting that gonadectomy affected intestinal uptake of oxalate only in male rats The intestinal oxalate uptake rate in all the groups increased linearly with increasing oxalate concentration (0.1- 6.0 mM). Chemical composition of brush border membrane showed significant changes in the sialic acid, phospholipid and cholesterol content following castration, which may lead to ultrastructural changes in the membrane thereby, increasing the absorption of oxalate. 相似文献
