Hemlock looper, Lambdina fiscellaria (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), is one of the most important defoliator in North American forests. The common egg parasitoid Telenomus coloradensis Crawford (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) plays a significant role as a natural control agent, with parasitism levels in spring typically higher than in fall. The objectives of this study were to quantify changes in host acceptance and reproductive performance of the parasitoid in relation to (1) host egg fertilization in fall, (2) host diapause status, (3) host embryonic development in spring, and (4) host deprivation during summer. Our results indicate that T. coloradensis do not have the capacity to develop in unfertilized host eggs, whereas early‐diapausing eggs are more suitable for the parasitoid than post‐diapausing eggs. Furthermore, the host physiological suitability decreases with embryonic development in spring. Finally, a host deprivation period during the summer tends to negatively affect the parasitic activity of T. coloradensis. These laboratory results confirm previous hypotheses concerning T. coloradensis seasonal ecology and contribute to a better understanding of the effect of hemlock looper egg physiology and availability on the reproductive potential of T. coloradensis. 相似文献

Translationally active plasmodia of the syncytial slime mold Physarum polycephalum develop into translationally dormant sclerotia during starvation. Although functional mRNA and ribosomes exist in sclerotia, protein synthesis is suppressed at the level of initiation. To test the possibility that alterations in the cytoskeleton may limit protein synthesis, we have examined the distribution of polysomes and actin mRNA in the cytoskeletal (CSK) and soluble (SOL) fractions of Triton X-100-extracted plasmodia and sclerotia. Most of the polysomes and actin mRNA were located in the CSK of plasmodia, while most of the ribosomes and actin mRNA were located in the SOL of sclerotia. The results suggest that ribosomes and mRNA shift from the CSK to the SOL as protein synthesis is suppressed during starvation. Plasmodia and sclerotia can be induced to accumulate excess polysomes by treatment with low levels of the elongation inhibitor cycloheximide. Treatment of plasmodia with cycloheximide caused excess polysomes to accumulate in the SOL, suggesting that the CSK contains a limited capacity for binding translational components and that the association of polysomes with the cytoskeleton is not required for protein synthesis. Treatment of sclerotia with cycloheximide, however, caused polysomes and actin mRNA to accumulate in the CSK, suggesting that the sclerotial cytoskeleton, although depleted in ribosomes and mRNA, is capable of binding translational components. An antigen (ZAB) common to Neisseria gonorrhoeae was prepared by stepwise elution of a crude gonococcal antigen (ZA) from columns of diethylaminoethyl cellulose employing 0.02 M phosphate buffers, pH 7.6, containing increasing concentrations of sodium chloride. Rats immunized with ZAB produced reaginic (IgE) antibody which cross-reacted with ZA prepared from eight gonococcal strains by the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) test. Heating of the sera at 56 degrees C for 4 h destroyed the PCA activity. The PCA activity of the anti-ZAB rat serum was removed after absorption with ZAB antigen or with rabbit anti-rat IgE but not after absorption with gonococcal lipopolysaccharide or with heat-killed or formalinized gonococci. Treatment of ZAB with trypsin or heating at 100 degrees C for 30 min destroyed or reduced the antigenic activity respectively. Further purification of ZAB by filtration through Sephadex G-100 gave a preparation (ZAB2) which contained the common antigen as shown by the cross-reactivity of anti-ZAB2 rat serum with seven stains of N. gonorrhoeae. Fraction ZAB2 contained material which had a molecular weight less than 13,700 and was associated with the presence of material absorbing at 260 nm. The results of this study indicate that a low molecular weight antigen, which appears to be protein in nature and associated with nuclei acid, is common to the gonococcus and is the main antigenic component inducing reaginic (IgE) antibody in the rat. 相似文献

Identified, proliferating S-phase cells in the postembryonic fish ear are known to be the precursors to new hair cells. It is not known, however, whether the ability to proliferate is restricted to a small population of cells. The ability of cells that are not normally in the cell cycle to enter S-phase was examined using the antimitotic drug cytosine arabinoside (ara-C). The normal population of S-phase cells in the saccule was destroyed by a single large dose of ara-C. Two weeks later, the prsence of S-phase cells was evaluated using the S-phase marker bromodeoxyuridine. The results strikingly demonstrate that S-phase cells are replaced, since S-phase cells returned to the saccule in the same number as found in normal fish. The data are interpreted to suggest that a large number of nonsensory support cells are capable of entering the cell cycle and that some mechanism must regulate which of these are actually cycling at any given time. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献
