Purpose
To determine the volume and degree of asymmetry of iliopsoas (IL) and gluteal muscles (GL) in tennis and soccer players.Methods
IL and GL volumes were determined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in male professional tennis (TP) and soccer players (SP), and in non-active control subjects (CG) (n = 8, 15 and 6, respectively).Results
The dominant and non-dominant IL were hypertrophied in TP (24 and 36%, respectively, P<0.05) and SP (32 and 35%, respectively, P<0.05). In TP the asymmetric hypertrophy of IL (13% greater volume in the non-dominant than in the dominant IL, P<0.01) reversed the side-to-side relationship observed in CG (4% greater volume in the dominant than in the contralateral IL, P<0.01), whilst soccer players had similar volumes in both sides (P = 0.87). The degree of side-to-side asymmetry decreased linearly from the first lumbar disc to the pubic symphysis in TP (r = −0.97, P<0.001), SP (r = −0.85, P<0.01) and CG (r = −0.76, P<0.05). The slope of the relationship was lower in SP due to a greater hypertrophy of the proximal segments of the dominant IL. Soccer and CG had similar GL volumes in both sides (P = 0.11 and P = 0.19, for the dominant and contralateral GL, respectively). GL was asymmetrically hypertrophied in TP. The non-dominant GL volume was 20% greater in TP than in CG (P<0.05), whilst TP and CG had similar dominant GL volumes (P = 0.14).Conclusions
Tennis elicits an asymmetric hypertrophy of IL and reverses the normal dominant-to-non-dominant balance observed in non-active controls, while soccer is associated to a symmetric hypertrophy of IL. Gluteal muscles are asymmetrically hypertrophied in TP, while SP display a similar size to that observed in controls. It remains to be determined whether the different patterns of IL and GL hypertrophy may influence the risk of injury. 相似文献43.

The aim of this study was to identify the causative genetic lesion in two apparently unrelated newborns having lethal lactic acidosis, multi-organ failure and congenital malformations including interrupted aortic arch, who exhibited mild methylmalonic aciduria, combined mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiency, and marked muscle mitochondrial DNA depletion. A novel mutation in the SUCLG1 gene was identified. Phenotype severity in Succinate-CoA ligase dysfunction appears to be more correlated to the muscle mtDNA content than to the tissue distribution of the heterodimer subunits. Twenty seven rhizobial strains associated with Acacia saligna grown in northern and southern Algeria were characterized, including generation time, host-range, the 16S rRNA gene and 16S–23S rRNA intergenic spacer restriction patterns, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and tolerance to salinity and drought. Cross inoculation tests indicated that 11 slow-growing isolates from northern nurseries were able to nodulate introduced Australian acacias exclusively, whereas 16 fast-growing isolates, mainly from southern nurseries, were capable of also nodulating native acacias. Restriction patterns and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that strains of the first group belonged to Bradyrhizobium while strains of the second group were related to Sinorhizobium meliloti and Rhizobium gallicum. Interestingly, five strains of the first group formed a distinct cluster phylogenetically close to Bradyrhizobium betae, a non-nodulating species causing tumour-like deformations in sugar beet roots. Bradyrhizobium strains were in general more sensitive to NaCl and PEG than the S. meliloti and R. gallicum representatives. Among the latter, strains S. meliloti BEC1 and R. gallicum DJA2 were able to tolerate up to 1 M NaCl and 20% PEG. This, together with their wide host-range among Acacia species, make them good candidates for developing inoculants for A. saligna and other acacia trees growing in arid areas. 相似文献

Varus knee alignment is a risk factor for medial knee osteoarthritis and is associated with high knee adduction moments. Therefore, reducing the knee adduction moment in varus-aligned individuals with otherwise healthy knees may reduce their risk for developing osteoarthritis. A gait modification that improves dynamic knee alignment may reduce the adduction moment, and systematic training may lead to more natural-feeling and less effortful execution of this pattern. To test these hypotheses, eight healthy, varus-aligned individuals underwent a gait modification protocol. Real-time feedback of dynamic knee alignment was provided over eight training sessions, using a fading paradigm. Natural and modified gait were assessed post-training and after 1 month, and compared to pre-training natural gait. The knee adduction moment, as well as hip adduction, hip internal rotation and knee adduction angles were evaluated. At each training session, subjects rated how effortful and natural-feeling the modified pattern was to execute. Post-training, the modified pattern demonstrated an 8° increase in hip internal rotation and 3° increase in hip adduction. Knee adduction decreased 2°, and the knee adduction moment decreased 19%. Natural gait did not differ between the three visits, nor did the modified gait pattern between the post-training and 1 month visits. The modified pattern felt more natural and required less effort after training. Based on these results, gait retraining to improve dynamic knee alignment resulted in significant reductions in the knee adduction moment, primarily through hip internal rotation. The alpha4beta1 integrin is an essential adhesion molecule for recruitment of circulating lymphocytes into lymphoid organs and peripheral sites of inflammation. Chemokines stimulate alpha4beta1 adhesive activity allowing lymphocyte arrest on endothelium and subsequent diapedesis. Activation of the GTPase Rac by the guanine-nucleotide exchange factor Vav1 promoted by CXCL12 controls T lymphocyte adhesion mediated by alpha4beta1. In this study, we investigated the role of DOCK2, a lymphocyte guanine-nucleotide exchange factor also involved in Rac activation, in CXCL12-stimulated human T lymphocyte adhesion mediated by alpha4beta1. Using T cells transfected with DOCK2 mutant forms defective in Rac activation or with DOCK2 small interfering RNA, we demonstrate that DOCK2 is needed for efficient chemokine-stimulated lymphocyte attachment to VCAM-1 under shear stress. Flow chamber, soluble binding, and cell spreading assays identified the strengthening of alpha4beta1-VCAM-1 interaction, involving high affinity alpha4beta1 conformations, as the adhesion step mainly controlled by DOCK2 activity. The comparison of DOCK2 and Vav1 involvement in CXCL12-promoted Rac activation and alpha4beta1-dependent human T cell adhesion indicated a more prominent role of Vav1 than DOCK2. These results suggest that DOCK2-mediated signaling regulates chemokine-stimulated human T lymphocyte alpha4beta1 adhesive activity, and that cooperation with Vav1 might be required to induce sufficient Rac activation for efficient adhesion. In contrast, flow chamber experiments using lymph node and spleen T cells from DOCK2(-/-) mice revealed no significant alterations in CXCL12-promoted adhesion mediated by alpha4beta1, indicating that DOCK2 activity is dispensable for triggering of this adhesion in mouse T cells, and suggesting that Rac activation plays minor roles in this process. 相似文献
