A technique has been developed to represent erythemally effective ultraviolet radiation exposure within a school environment. The technique models the erythemally effective exposure onto a horizontal plane representation of a mapped school environment located in Hervey Bay (25 degrees S, 153 degrees E), Australia. The input parameters used to model the ultraviolet exposures received within the school playground included the measured sky view, ground albedo and standing surface albedo. Estimates of the erythemally effective ultraviolet exposure received within the school playground during morning tea and lunch time meal breaks during a winter and summer school day are presented. The influence of tree shade and building structure was found to vary significantly with solar zenith angle modelled over the winter and summer school meal break times with horizontal plane exposures predicted to vary from between 0 and 7 SED at different locations within the playground. The technique presented provides a method that can be followed to examine the effect of surrounding buildings and surface structures of real environments on the predicted horizontal plane ultraviolet exposure.  相似文献

Summary 1. On the seaward face of Port Erin breakwater large algae do not occur on the lowest three metres. Here the density ofEchinus esculentus is high.2. Over a three year period allEchinus were removed from a 10 m wide strip at about monthly intervals. The total number of individuals removed approached 3000.3. One year after initial clearance the mean density ofLaminaria hyperborea sporelings on the strip was 22.7/m2 and 5.1/m2 to one side of it. By the winter these had almost disappeared outside the strip and in the succeeding years second and third year plants were found only on the strip or close to its edge. Other algae were similarly affected.4. It is concluded that the lower limit ofL. hyperborea is determined at least in part by the grazing pressure ofEchinus and that the urchins exercise some control over the numbers of other algae.

Kurzfassung An der Sesseite des Port Erin Wellenbrecherdammes kommen keine größeren Algen im Bereich der unteren 3 m vor. Hier herrscht eine große Besiedlungsdichte des SeeigelsEchinus esculentus (3,6 Individuen pro m2). Über eine Zeitspanne von 3 Jahren wurden nun sämtlicheE. esculentus von einem 10 m breiten und 12 m langen Felsstreifen allmonatlich entfernt; insgesamt wurden dabei etwa 3000 Individuen abgesammelt. Ein Jahr nach Beginn des Absammelns betrug die mittlere Siedlungsdichte der jungenLaminaria hyperborea auf dem von Seeigeln freigehaltenen Felsstreifen 22,7/m2. In den folgenden Jahren wurden zwei- und dreijährigeL. hyperborea nur auf diesem Felsstreifen oder in der Nähe seiner Begrenzungen gefunden. Andere Algenarten reagierten in ähnlicher Weise. Aus den Befunden wird gefolgert, daß die untere Verbreitungsgrenze vonL. hyperborea zumindest zum Teil durch Seeigelfraß bestimmt wird, und daßE. esculentus die Siedlungsdichte der anderen Algenarten beeinflußt.

We have used a monoclonal antibody directed against the C-terminus of the Drosophila invected homeodomain to detect a nuclear protein in brain cells of Xenopus laevis embryos. We refer to this antigen as the Xenopus EN protein. The EN protein is localized at midneurula stage to a band of cells in the anterior portion of the neural plate, on each side of the neural groove. Later in development, the expression coincides with the boundary of the midbrain and hindbrain, and persists at least to the swimming tadpole stage. These properties make the EN protein an excellent molecular marker for anterior neural structures. In embryos where inductive interactions between mesodermal and ectodermal tissues have been perturbed, the expression of the EN protein is altered; in embryos that have been anterodorsalized by LiCl treatment, the region that expresses the EN protein is expanded, but still well organized. In ventralized UV-irradiated embryos, the absence of the protein is correlated with the absence of anterior neural structures. In extreme exogastrulae, where the contacts between head mesoderm and prospective neurectoderm are lost, the EN protein is not expressed.  相似文献

Abstract In DOC-PAGE, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Proteus mirabilis R14/1959 (Rb-type) mutant showed a ladder-like migration pattern indicating the presence of a high molecular weight polysaccharide chain. The isolated polysaccharide, called T-antigen because of similarity with the T1 chain of Salmonella friedenau LPS, contained d -glucose, d -galacturonic acid ( d -GalA), and d -GlcNAc in molar ratios 2:1:1 and was structurally different from the O-antigen of the parental S-strain P. mirabilis S1959 but identical to the O-antigen of another S-strain Proteus penneri 42. The importance of a d -GalA( l -Lys)-containing epitope, most likely present in the core region of LPS, and of GalA present in the T-antigen chain in manifesting the serological specificity of P. mirabilis R14/1959 were revealed using rabbit polyclonal homologous and heterologous R- and O-specific antisera and the appropriate antigens, including synthetic antigens which represent partial structures of various Proteus LPS.  相似文献

Summary Interactions between bovine trophoblastic cell vesicles and bovine endometrial epithelial cells were investigated by light and electron microscopy and lectin histochemistry in a cell culture model of early blastocyst attachment. Primary lines of bovine endometrial epithelial cells were polarized by subculturing on substrata and maintaining cultures at the air-medium interface. Trophoblastic cell vesicles were obtained from elongated Day 14 blastocysts. In co-cultures, trophoblastic cell vesicles adhered to endometrial epithelial cells through microvillus interdigitation and formation of primitive membrane junctional complexes. After 3 d in co-culture, a multilayered cellular plaque formed at the trophoblastic cell-endometrial epithelial cell interface. The type of cells contributing to this local proliferative response could not be identified specifically as trophoblastic or endometrial cells, and areas of membrane fusion between cells were noted. Ultrastructural features of vesicle adhesion in cultures were similar to features of conceptus attachment in vivo. Lectins bound to apical membranes of trophoblastic cells and endometrial epithelial cells in all locations except contact sites between vesicles and endometrial cells. These findings suggest that local cellular proliferation and membrane fusion between trophoblastic and endometrial epithelial cells may be early events in conceptus implantation in the cow and these events can be reproduced in culture. The microbial degradation of lignocellulose biomass is not only an important biological process but is of increasing industrial significance in the bioenergy sector. The mechanism by which the plant cell wall, an insoluble composite structure, activates the extensive repertoire of microbial hydrolytic enzymes required to catalyze its degradation is poorly understood. Here we have used a transposon mutagenesis strategy to identify a genetic locus, consisting of two genes that modulate the expression of xylan side chain-degrading enzymes in the saprophytic bacterium Cellvibrio japonicus. Significantly, the locus encodes a two-component signaling system, designated AbfS (sensor histidine kinase) and AbfR (response regulator). The AbfR/S two-component system is required to activate the expression of the suite of enzymes that remove the numerous side chains from xylan, but not the xylanases that hydrolyze the beta1,4-linked xylose polymeric backbone of this polysaccharide. Studies on the recombinant sensor domain of AbfS (AbfS(SD)) showed that it bound to decorated xylans and arabinoxylo-oligosaccharides, but not to undecorated xylo-oligosaccharides or other plant structural polysaccharides/oligosaccharides. The crystal structure of AbfS(SD) was determined to a resolution of 2.6A(.) The overall fold of AbfS(SD) is that of a classical Per Arndt Sim domain with a central antiparallel four-stranded beta-sheet flanked by alpha-helices. Our data expand the number of molecules known to bind to the sensor domain of two-component histidine kinases to include complex carbohydrates. The biological rationale for a regulatory system that induces enzymes that remove the side chains of xylan, but not the hydrolases that cleave the backbone of the polysaccharide, is discussed.  相似文献
