This article presents a review of the literature on the epidemiology and public health implications of Helicobacter pylori infection published from April 2008 through to March 2009. The authors used MeSH terms "Helicobacter infections epidemiology,""Helicobacter infections prevention and control" to search multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Cochrane Library, EBMR, BIOSIS), and independently searched PubMed using the term "Helicobacter" with "Epidemiology,""Transmission,""Prevalence" or "Environment." Articles without topical relevance were excluded. Two additional papers known to the authors were added. The identified literature is summarized by subtopic: reviews; prevalence; incidence; transmission; risk factors; and public health policy. 相似文献
The 16S rRNA gene has been used in the last decades as a gold standard for determining the phylogenetic position of bacteria and their taxonomy. It is a well conserved gene, with some variations, present in all bacteria and allows the reconstruction of genealogies of microorganisms. Nevertheless, this gene has its limitations when inferring phylogenetic relationships between closely related isolates. To overcome this problem, DNA–DNA hybridization appeared as a solution to clarify interspecies relationships when the sequence similarity of the 16S rRNA gene is above 97 %. However, this technique is time consuming, expensive and laborious and so, researchers developed other molecular markers such as sequencing of housekeeping or functional genes for accurate determination of bacterial phylogeny. One of these genes that have been used successfully, particularly in clinical microbiology, codes for the beta subunit of the RNA polymerase (rpoB). The rpoB gene is sufficiently conserved to be used as a molecular clock, it is present in all bacteria and it is a mono-copy gene. In this study, rpoB gene sequencing was applied to the phylum Planctomycetes. Based on the genomes of 19 planctomycetes it was possible to determine the correlation between the rpoB gene sequence and the phylogenetic position of the organisms at a 95–96 % sequence similarity threshold for a novel species. A 1200-bp fragment of the rpoB gene was amplified from several new planctomycetal isolates and their intra and inter-species relationships to other members of this group were determined based on a 96.3 % species border and 98.2 % for intraspecies resolution. 相似文献
Caffeine, a stimulant largely consumed around the world, is a non-selective adenosine receptor antagonist, and therefore caffeine actions at synapses usually, but not always, mirror those of adenosine. Importantly, different adenosine receptors with opposing regulatory actions co-exist at synapses. Through both inhibitory and excitatory high-affinity receptors (A1R and A2R, respectively), adenosine affects NMDA receptor (NMDAR) function at the hippocampus, but surprisingly, there is a lack of knowledge on the effects of caffeine upon this ionotropic glutamatergic receptor deeply involved in both positive (plasticity) and negative (excitotoxicity) synaptic actions. We thus aimed to elucidate the effects of caffeine upon NMDAR-mediated excitatory post-synaptic currents (NMDAR-EPSCs), and its implications upon neuronal Ca2+ homeostasis. We found that caffeine (30–200 μM) facilitates NMDAR-EPSCs on pyramidal CA1 neurons from Balbc/ByJ male mice, an action mimicked, as well as occluded, by 1,3-dipropyl-cyclopentylxantine (DPCPX, 50 nM), thus likely mediated by blockade of inhibitory A1Rs. This action of caffeine cannot be attributed to a pre-synaptic facilitation of transmission because caffeine even increased paired-pulse facilitation of NMDA-EPSCs, indicative of an inhibition of neurotransmitter release. Adenosine A2ARs are involved in this likely pre-synaptic action since the effect of caffeine was mimicked by the A2AR antagonist, SCH58261 (50 nM). Furthermore, caffeine increased the frequency of Ca2+ transients in neuronal cell culture, an action mimicked by the A1R antagonist, DPCPX, and prevented by NMDAR blockade with AP5 (50 μM). Altogether, these results show for the first time an influence of caffeine on NMDA receptor activity at the hippocampus, with impact in neuronal Ca2+ homeostasis.

The neotropical, freshwater copepod Notodiaptomus iheringi decreasedthe growth of small colonies in cyanobacteria-dominated plankton, indicating that they can be efficiently ingested and that theymay represent an important food source for this copepod in reservoirsdominated by cyanobacteria. Cultured, colonial, toxic Microcystisaeruginosa was not affected, indicating that toxicity may causea decrease in its ingestion by N. iheringi. 相似文献
Although growth and productivity of most crops are significantly reduced by exposure to temperatures in excess of 35 °C, some plants thrive in geothermally heated soils characterized by chronic temperatures in excess of 40 °C. The morphological adaptations that enable these plants to colonize thermal environments are poorly understood. We characterized trichome development, silica accumulation, stomatal density, and waxy cuticle development in populations of Dichanthelium lanuginosum var sericeum (Schmoll) isolated from thermal and non-thermal environments to determine whether morphological changes existed in populations adapted to thermal environments. Plants isolated from thermal environments of Yellowstone National Park developed an extensive series of trichomes when exposed to chronic temperatures of 45/35 °C (day/night). In contrast, isolates from non-thermal environments of western Oregon showed minimal trichome development during exposure to the elevated temperatures. Leaves that developed during exposure to elevated temperatures had reduced thickness, though the reduction was less marked in plants from populations isolated from thermal environments. Plants isolated from thermal environments also had greater numbers of stomata on adaxial leaf surfaces relative to biotypes isolated from non-thermal environments. These results suggest phenotypic characteristics that may be useful in selection of new varieties of crop species with improved tolerance to supraoptimal temperatures. 相似文献
Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36 amino acid peptide widely present in the CNS, including the retina. Previous studies have demonstrated that NPY promotes cell proliferation of rat post-natal hippocampal and olfactory epithelium precursor cells. The aim of this work was to investigate the role of NPY on cell proliferation of rat retinal neural cells. For this purpose, primary retinal cell cultures expressing NPY, and NPY Y1, Y2, Y4 and Y5 receptors [Álvaro et al. , (2007) Neurochem. Int., 50, 757] were used. NPY (10–1000 nM) stimulated cell proliferation through the activation of NPY Y1, Y2 and Y5 receptors. NPY also increased the number of proliferating neuronal progenitor cells (BrdU+/nestin+ cells). The intracellular mechanisms coupled to NPY receptors activation that mediate the increase in cell proliferation were also investigated. The stimulatory effect of NPY on cell proliferation was reduced by l -nitroarginine-methyl-esther ( l -NAME; 500 μM), a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo-[4, 3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ; 20 μM), a soluble guanylyl cyclase inhibitor or U0126 (1 μM), an inhibitor of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK 1/2). In conclusion, NPY stimulates retinal neural cell proliferation, and this effect is mediated through nitric oxide–cyclic GMP and ERK 1/2 pathways. 相似文献
