Reliability theory is used to explore the consequences of ant colony's foraging techniques for the evolution of individual competence. Five fundamental strategies are outlined according to Oster & Wilson (1978) and corresponding probabilities of food being returned to the nest are derived. The strategies differ in redundancy schemes and levels of worker reliability. Colony-level selection produces workers of imperfect competence. System reliability can be very high even when the workers are inept, if the foraging strategy is complex and redundant. Individual competence of foragers in a colony depends on diet breadth, caste polymorphism, and tempo. The implications of each variable for colony survival are discussed. 相似文献

Conclusions The results we have obtained on forearm muscles of normal human subjects are complementary to those on isolated frog muscle and they lead, to the same conclusions. We are satisfied that our31P TMR measurements of [P-metabolites] in normal subjects are reliable, and we are now extending these methods for use in cases of degenerative muscular disorders (Edwards et al., 1982). Chemical estimates of [ADP] and [AMP] are not directly relevant to metabolic studies, and so an important contribution of NMR to the study of muscular mechanisms is its ability to estimate the concentrations of these metabolites that are free to take part in metabolic reactions. 相似文献

The Drosophila discs large tumor suppressor protein, Dlg, is the prototype of a newly discovered family of proteins termed MAGUKs (membrane-associated guanylate kinase homologues). MAGUKs are localized at the membrane-cytoskeleton interface, usually at cell-cell junctions, where they appear to have both structural and signaling roles. They contain several distinct domains, including a modified guanylate kinase domain, an SH3 motif, and one or three copies of the DHR (GLGF/PDZ) domain. Recessive lethal mutations in the discs large tumor suppressor gene interfere with the formation of septate junctions (thought to be the arthropod equivalent of tight junctions) between epithelial cells, and they cause neoplastic overgrowth of imaginal discs, suggesting a role for cell junctions in proliferation control. A homologue of the Dlg protein, named Hdlg, has been isolated from human B lymphocytes. It shows 65-79% identity to Dlg in the different domains, and it binds to the cytoskeletal protein 4.1. Here, we report that the gene for lymphocyte Hdlg, named DLG1, is located at chromosome band 3q29. This finding identifies a novel site for a candidate tumor suppressor on chromosome 3. 相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background Traditionally, comparative life cycle assessments (LCA) have not considered rebound effects, for instance in case of significant
price differences among the compared products. No justifications have been made for this delimitation in scope. This article
shows that price differences and the consequent effects of marginal consumer expenditure may influence the conclusions of
comparative LCA significantly. We also show that considerations about rebound effects of price differences can be included
in LCAs.
Methods The direct rebound effect of a price difference is marginal consumption. Based on statistical data on private consumption
in different income groups (Statistics Denmark 2005a, 2005b), the present article provides an estimate of how an average Danish
household will spend an additional 1 DKK for further consumer goods, when the household has gained money from choosing a cheaper
product alternative. The approach is to use marginal income changes and the following changes in consumption patterns as an
expression for marginal consumption. Secondly, the environmental impact potentials related to this marginal consumption are
estimated by the use of environmental impact intensity data from an IO-LCA database (Weidema et al. 2005). Finally, it is
discussed whether, and in which ways the conclusions of comparative LCAs can be affected by including the price difference
between product alternatives. This is elucidated in a case study of a comparative LCA screening of two different kinds of
Danish cheese products (Fricke et al. 2004).
Results Car purchase and driving, use and maintenance of dwelling, clothing purchase and insurance constitutes the largest percentages
of the marginal consumption. In a case study of two cheeses, the including the impact potentials related to the price difference
results in significant changes in the total impact potentials. Considering the relatively small price difference of the two
products, it is likely also to have a significant influence on the results of comparative LCAs more generally.
Discussion The influence of marginal consumption in comparative LCAs is relevant to consider in situations with large differences in
the price of the product alternatives being compared, and in situations with minor differences in the impact potentials related
to the alternatives. However, different uncertainties are linked to determining the pattern for marginal consumption and the
environmental impact potential related to this. These are first of all related to the method used, but also include inaccurate
data of consumption in households, aggregation and weighting of income groups, aggregation of product groups, estimation and
size of the price difference, and the general applicability of the results.
Conclusion Incorporating marginal consumption in consequential LCAs is possible in practice. In the case study used, including the rebound
effects of the price difference has a significant influence on the result of the comparative LCA, as the result for the impact
categories acidification and nutrient enrichment changes in favour of the expensive product.
Recommendations and Perspectives It is recommended that the rebound effects of price differences should be included more frequently in LCAs. In order to ensure
this, further research in marginal consumption and investment patterns and IO data for different countries or regions is required.
Furthermore, this study does not consider the economic distributional consequences of buying an expensive product instead
of a cheaper product (e.g. related to how the profit is spent by those who provided the product). It should also be noted,
that more expensive products not necessarily result in less consumption, as those who provided the product also will spend
the money they have earned from the sale. Ideally, these consequences should also be further investigated. Likewise, the development
of databases to include marginal consumption in PC-tools is needed. In general, considerations of marginal consumption would
favour expensive product alternatives, depending, however, on the type of consumer.

Aspergillus nidulans is an excellent experimental organism for the study of gene regulation. Genetic and molecular analyses oftrans-acting andcis-acting mutations have revealed a complex pattern of regulation involving multiple independent controls. Expression of theamdS gene is regulated by thefacB andamdA genes which encode positively acting regulatory proteins mediating a major and a minor form of acetate induction respectively. The product of theamdR gene mediates omega amino acid induction ofamdS. The binding sites for each of these proteins have been localised throughamdS cis-acting mutations which specifically affect the interaction with the regulatory protein. The global controls of nitrogen metabolite repression and carbon catabolite repression regulate the expression of many catabolic genes, includingamdS. Nitrogen control is exerted through the positively actingareA gene product and carbon control is dependent on thecreA gene product. Each of the characterized regulatory genes encodes a DNA-binding protein which recognises particular sequences in theamdS promoter to activate or repress gene expression. Several neuropsychiatric disorders map to human 15q13-q14, which contains a strong candidate in the alpha7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit gene (CHRNA7) and is partly duplicated, complicating further genetic analysis. We have shown that the partial duplication is in a hybrid (CHRFAM7A)between CHRNA7 and one of many copies of a novel gene (FAM7A). We have constructed a 3-Mb map of 15q13-q14 showing that CHRFAM7A is part of a large segmental duplication in the opposite orientation to CHRNA7 and revealing several other duplications. The data support a model of recent evolutionary events including duplications, at least one large deletion, and an inversion. We have identified two individuals with a structure that lacks CHRFAM7A and therefore predates many steps in this model, suggesting an unstable region with other intermediates possibly still in existence. Biological invasions can alter ecosystem functions such as litter decomposition and nutrient cycling, but little is known about how invader abundance influences the impact on the ecosystem. It is often assumed that impacts are proportional to invasion density, but this assumption has never been tested and has little justification. We tested the hypothesis that the microbial community structure and function of a mixed hardwood forest soil changed after invasion by Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii), an invasive shrub commonly found in eastern hardwood forests, and that changes were proportional to the density of invasion. We constructed microcosms with mixtures of native and invasive leaf litter, and measured microbial community structure (phospholipid fatty acids) and function (litter decomposition). Decomposition was linearly related to the degree of invasion (R 2?=?0.945), but the ratio of bacteria to fungi exhibited a strongly non-linear, threshold response (R 2?=?0.513). These results indicate that impacts of Japanese barberry invasion are not always proportional to invasion density. This finding has implications for the study of biological invasions as well as practical implications for the management of exotic invasive species. 相似文献
