Understanding how plant–animal interactions shape plant regeneration is traditionally examined at local scales. In contrast, landscape ecologists working at regional scales often have to infer the mechanisms underlying vegetation patterns. In this study, we empirically explored how landscape attributes (patch connectivity, size, shape, irradiance, slope, and elevation) influence biotic interactions in 1- and 2-year seedlings and saplings of Quercus ilex. We combined field data and GIS-based information under a set of five connectivity scenarios, presuming low, intermediate, and long-distance seed dispersal. Our study emphasizes that landscape, apart from its direct effects on plants, plays a key, albeit indirect, role in plant demography through its effects on seed dispersers and predators. Moreover, the effects of landscape on recruitment differed between plant life stages. One-year seedlings and saplings appear to depend more on plant–animal interactions, while 2-year seedlings depend more on irradiance. Differences in patch connectivity resulted in direct and indirect effects on biotic interactions, which, in turn, produced contrasting positive and negative effects on regeneration at different stages of the life cycle. While jays and wild boars seem crucial to all life stages and most of the connectivity scenarios, rodents and herbivores affected only 1-year seedlings and saplings, respectively, and only a few of the connectivity scenarios. By simultaneously including an ensemble of explanatory factors, our study emphasizes that regeneration depends on a set of key drivers, both abiotic (i.e. irradiance) and biotic (i.e. jays and wild boars), whose effects are greatly modulated by landscape traits.  相似文献

The ARF GTPase Activating Protein 1 (ARFGAP1) associates mainly with the cytosolic side of Golgi cisternal membranes where it participates in the formation of both COPI and clathrin-coated vesicles. In this study, we show that ARFGAP1 associates transiently with lipid droplets upon addition of oleate in cultured cells. Also, that addition of cyclic AMP shifts ARFGAP1 from lipid droplets to the Golgi apparatus and that overexpression and knockdown of ARFGAP1 affect lipid droplet formation. Examination of human liver tissue reveals that ARFGAP1 is found associated with lipid droplets at steady state in some but not all hepatocytes.  相似文献

In this contribution we study and analyse the influence of the different parameters involved in the magnetic susceptibility of six-coordinated high-spin Co(II) complexes. We propose an empirical expression to fit the magnetic susceptibility of polycrystalline samples of mononuclear Co(II) complexes with an axial distortion, the variable parameters being Δ (axial distortion), α (orbital reduction factor) and λ (spin–orbit coupling). This expression avoids solving the 12 × 12 matrix associated to the distortion of the 4T1g term. In order to take into account the magnetic coupling (J) in the polynuclear Co(II) complexes, a perturbational approach is proposed to describe their magnetic susceptibility in the whole temperature range (2–300 K) as a function of J, Δ, α and λ. This approach is valid in the limit of the weak magnetic coupling as compared to the spin–orbit coupling, |J/λ| < 0.1. The model allows the treatment of each cobalt(II) ion in axial symmetry as an effective spin Seff = 1/2. That causes a drastic reduction of the matrix size of the polynuclear compounds from 12n × 12n to 2n × 2n, n being the number of Co(II) ions in the complex. The main advantage of the model is to make possible the fit of the magnetic susceptibility data of those polynuclear Co(II) complexes whose high nuclearity involved intractable matrices.  相似文献

Riparian areas are often the only green areas left in urban and suburban landscapes, providing opportunities for conservation and connectivity of both aquatic and terrestrial organisms. While city planners and land managers often tout the importance of riparian networks for these uses, it is not well established if urban riparian plant communities are actually functioning as connected assemblages. Furthermore, urban riparian zones are well known to be highly invaded by non-native plant species and may be functioning to increase the spread of non-native species across the landscape. Here we examine connectivity of plant assemblages in riparian networks within an extensively urbanized landscape. We sampled riparian plant communities at 13 sites along three second-order streams of the Rahway River watershed, New Jersey. We also characterized propagule dispersal at each site by sampling litter packs on the river banks five times between March–October 2011 and identifying germinants from litter packs after cold stratification. Species turnover of both riparian and litter vegetation was more strongly associated with flow distance, particularly for native species, indicating that riverine systems are important for promoting connectivity of native plant assemblages in urban landscapes. However, non-native germinants significantly dominated propagule dispersal along the stream reaches, particularly early in the growing season, suggesting spread utilizing the river system and preemption may be an important mechanism for invasion success in this system. Our data show that management of invasive species should be planned and implemented at the watershed scale to reduce spread via the river system.  相似文献

During lymphocyte migration, engagement of VCAM-1 stimulates the generation of endothelial cell-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) and activation of matrix metalloproteinases, facilitating endothelial retraction. Because bilirubin is a potent antioxidant, we examined the hypothesis that this bile pigment inhibits VCAM-1-dependent cellular events. The migration of isolated murine splenic lymphocytes across monolayers of murine endothelial cell lines (which constitutively express VCAM-1) is significantly inhibited by physiological concentrations of bilirubin, in the absence of an effect on lymphocyte adhesion. Bilirubin administration also suppresses VCAM-1-stimulated ROS generation and reduces endothelial cell matrix metalloproteinase activity. In a murine asthma model characterized by VCAM-1-dependent airway inflammation, treatment of C57BL6/J mice with i.p. bilirubin decreases the total leukocyte count in the lung parenchyma and lavage fluid, through specific inhibition of eosinophil and lymphocyte infiltration. Blood eosinophil counts were increased in bilirubin-treated animals, while VCAM-1 expression in the capillary endothelium and cytokine levels in both lung lavage and supernatants from cultured lymph node lymphocytes were unchanged, suggesting that bilirubin inhibits leukocyte migration. Conclusion: bilirubin blocks VCAM-1-dependent lymphocyte migration in vitro and ameliorates VCAM-1-mediated airway inflammation in vivo, apparently through the suppression of cellular ROS production. These findings support a potential role for bilirubin as an endogenous immunomodulatory agent.  相似文献
