Zusammenfassung Die Feinstruktur der Maxillarnephridien von Scutigerella immaculata Newport mit ihren drei Abschnitten Sacculus, Tubulus und Ausführgang wurde untersucht. Die Zellen des Sacculus sind typische Podocyten, an denen eine Ultrafiltration ablaufen kann. Möglicherweise wird die Filtration durch einen den Sacculus umgebenden Muskel unterstützt. Die Zellen des Tubulus zeigen basale Einfaltungen und im proximalen Teil auch Mikrovilli. Sowohl im Tubulus als auch im Ausführgang, dessen Zellen ebenfalls basale Einfaltungen aufweisen, werden Reabsorptionsprozesse vermutet.

Summary The fine structure of the maxillary kidney of Scutigerella immaculata Newport (Symphyla) has been investigated. It may be compared with segmental organs of other Arthropoda having an end-sac which forms a primary urine by ultrafiltration. The filtration may be supported by a muscle surrounding the end-sac. The tubular part of the nephridium and the efferent duct show structures which may be involved in reabsorption.

Cardiac muscle     
Summary The ultrastructure of chicken and frog cardiac muscle are compared and then contrasted with the ultrastructure of mammalian cardiac muscle. Both chicken and frog cardiac muscle have no transverse tubules, remarkably few nexuses and no prominent M-lines. M-fibers of both animals are small (2–5 ) in diameter and contain dense granules. Chicken cardiac muscle like mammalian cardiac muscle has very well developed sarcoplasmic reticulum and couplings. The latter do not occur in frog cardiac muscle and the former is poorly developed in that muscle. Morphologic evidence is presented in the frog and chicken heart that would tend to attribute to the sarcoplasmic reticulum a transport function for electron-dense material (presumably proteinaceous) the possible significance of which is discussed. Purkinje fibers were identified in the form of a network on the endocardial surface of both atria and ventricles of chicken hearts. The topography of these fibers corresponds to that of a population of fibers in small mammalian hearts that, and unlike ventricular fibers in those animals, does not have transverse tubules.This investigation was presented, in part, at the 2nd Annual Summer Workshop of the Council on Basic Science of the American Heart Association in Mountain View, California, August 5–8, 1968; at the Gordon Conference on Myocardial Contractility in Holderness, New Hampshire, August 12–16, 1968; and at the 8th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology in Boston, Massachusetts, November 11–13, 1968. Summary From the communication engineers point of view the paper deals with networks consisting of linear filters and a special sort of controlled statistical pulse generators (SIG). The SIG responds to an analog signal with a sequence of Dirac impulses, where the probability for an output impulse at a given time depends on the instantaneous value of the input signal only. In connection with linear filters, however, systems can be realized in which the whole past of the input determines the statistical structure of the output. Therefore systems consisting of linear filters and SIGs (SIG networks) become interesting as models of biological systems, because in biological information processing transformations from analog signals into pulse trains occur very often. An example concerning the application of SIG systems in behavioural sciences will be discussed in a subsequent paper. In the present paper a theoretical analysis of the SIG and SIG networks is carried out by means of Statistical Communication Theory and Theory of Stochastic Processes. It is shown that under certain conditions very complex SIG networks can be treated with Correlation Theory. For one case not satisfying these conditions a solution on the base of Markoff processes is given.

On the systematics and the evolution of variation and distributional patterns in the species and subspecies of the genus Pungitius Coste, 1848 (Pisces, Gasterosteidae) 1. In the genus Pungitius (similarly as in Gasterosteus) there seems to be of some interest the bony armature, especially from the zoogeographical point of view. These lateral bony shields are developed in the skin (instead of scales which are completely lacking in the family of Gasterosteidae) and are more or less present just as to the provenance of the individuals. 2. Preponderantly with respect to this bony armature several species and subspecies have been distinguished in the genus Pungitius, the variability, distribution and systematics of which are critically reviewed and compared in the present paper on the basis of museum material and data from the literature. 3. For the sake of adequate interpretation of modern distributional patterns there may be assumed an originally fully armoured type at the end of the Tertiary from which (after having escaped the ice by southward migration) during the Pleistocene period in several refugial areas new species or subspecies have derived, partially by reduction of the bony armature under freshwater conditions. During postglacial times these subspecies penetrated different areas but in some localities also produced mixed populations ofter having contacted within the same region. At least in some cases this may have led to subsequent hybridization. 4. The species P. platygaster in its modern distribution in the ponto-caspi-aralic region is now geographically isolated from the holarctic-circumpolarly distributed P. pungitius in its recent subspecies pungitius with reduced bony armature. Of this latter (originally fully armoured) species populations are assumed to have penetrated, at latest during the penultimate (= Riß) glaciation the Caspian Sea and subsequently the Black Sea and Lake Aral. These populations are the assumed ancestors of the nowaday still fully armoured P. platygaster. A decision as to the real degree of differentiation between the recent P. pungitius and P. platygaster has to be left to future crossbreeding experiments the results of which will possibly lead to a subspecies concept only. 5. In contrast to the foregoing the fully plated original type of P. pungitius underwent a serious reduction in its bony armature especially in the Southwest European refugium which led to a total loss of bony shields in the subspecies P. p. laevis. 6. As may be concluded from the now occurring types, this reduction seems to have been generally less pronounced in the East Asiatic refugium. We are confronted here, probably as a result of postglacial spread with the occurrence of three subspecies within the same area, i. e. the fullyarmoured P. p. sinensis on the one hand, and P. p. tymensis with reduced lateral plates (and also reduced lateral processes of the pubic bones in the pelvis girdle) and the holarctic-circumpolarly distributed P. p. pungitius with likewise reduced bony armature on the other hand. Of these subspecies the fully plated sinensis seems in its appearance to approach best what we perhaps may imagine as the original type of P. pungitius at the end of the Tertiary.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die Wirkung von Aktinomycin auf die neurosekretorischen Q-und P-Zellen im Cerebralganglion von Enchytraeus wurde untersucht. Die Cytophotometrie lichtmikroskopischer Präparate von Q-Zellen ergab, daß in den ersten Stunden nach Aktinomycin-Behandlung eine deutliche Verminderung PAF-positiven Materials auftritt. Die ersten Veränderungen wurden elektronenmikroskopisch zwischen 1 und 4 Std nach Aktinomycin-Injektion beobachtet. Sie waren in beiden Zelltypen am eindeutigsten am Nucleolus. Es kommt zu einer Sonderung und räumlichen Trennung von granulärem und fibrillärem Material. Letzteres wird sehr stark vermehrt.In bezug auf Veränderungen der Strukturen des Cytoplasmas unterscheiden sich die Q-und P-Zellen besonders im Verhalten des Golgi-Apparates und der Ribosomen. Der Golgi-Apparat wird in den Q-Zellen kurze Zeit nach Applikation von Aktinomycin reduziert. In den P-Zellen persistiert er dagegen über alle beobachteten Zeitstufen hinweg. Die Ribosomen lösen sich von den Membranen in den Q-Zellen 4–8 Std nach Injektion, was in den P-Zellen nicht festzustellen ist. Diese Tatsachen führen zu der Annahme, daß das System der Proteinsynthese der P-Zellen relativ stabiler als das der Q-Zellen ist.Die in den späteren Zeitstufen beobachtete Normalisierung der Zellstrukturen läßt darauf schließen, daß die Wirkung des einmalig injizierten Aktinomycins 24 Std danach nachzulassen beginnt.
Light and electron microscopic studies on the influence of actinomycin D on the dynamics of neurosecretory cells of Enchytraeus (Oligochaeta)
Summary The influence of actinomycin on the neurosecretory Q and P cells of the brain of Enchytraeus was studied. Cytophotometrical measurements of Q cells in light mirocscopic preparations showed a significant decrease of PAF-positive material in the first hours after actinomycin application. At the ultrastructural level primary changes were established one to four hours after injection of actinomycin: In the nucleolus granular and fibrillar material became separated; there was a substantial increase of the fibrillar component.Concerning structural changes of the cytoplasm, Q and P cells differed especially with respect to the Golgi apparatus and the ribosomes. In the Q cells the Golgi apparatus had become greatly reduced shortly after actinomycin treatment. However, it persisted in P cells during all stages examined. Ribosomes became detached from membranes only in Q cells between 4 and 8 hours after injection.These data indicate that protein synthesis in P cells shows greater stability than in Q cells. The restitution of normal ultrastruoture during subsequent stages indicates that effects begin to subside 24 hours after a single injection.

Zusammenfassung Am Präanalsegment von Scutigerella befindet sich ein Paar Trichobothrien, das komplizierter gebaut ist als entsprechende Sinnesorgane anderer Arthropoden. Die distalen Fortsätze von sechzehn Sinneszellen stehen mit der Gelenkmembran des nach allen Seiten beweglichen Sinneshaares in Verbindung. Aus ihrer Anordnung kann geschlossen werden, daß Scutigerella mit Hilfe des Trichobothriums mindestens acht verschiedene Richtungen unterscheiden kann. Der adäquate Reiz für die Trichobothrien dürften Luftbewegungen sein.

Summary One pair of trichobothria is situated on the lateral portions of the preanal segment of Scutigerella. They are rather complicated compared to similar organs of other Arthroods. The distal portions of 16 sense cells are connected to the elastic membrane of the sense hair which can be turned in every direction. From the arrangement of the distal parts of the sense cells it may be concluded that Scutigerella can distinguish at least eight different directions. Probably movements of the air are the adequate stimulus for the trichobothrium.

The structure of a small strand of rabbit heart muscle fibers (trabecula carnea), 30–80 µ in diameter, has been examined with light and electron microscopy. By establishing a correlation between the appearance of regions of close fiber contact in light and electron microscopy, the extent and distribution of regions of close apposition of fibers has been evaluated in approximately 200 µ length of a strand. The distribution of possible regions of resistive coupling between fibers has been approximated by a model system of cables. The theoretical linear electrical properties of such a system have been analyzed and the implications of the results of this analysis are discussed. Since this preparation is to be used for correlated studies of the electrical, mechanical, and cytochemical properties of cardiac muscle, a comprehensive study of the morphology of this preparation has been made. The muscle fibers in it are distinguished from those of the rabbit papillary muscle, in that they have no triads and have a kind of mitochondrion not found in papillary muscle. No evidence of a transverse tubular system was found, but junctions of cisternae of the sarcoplasmic reticulum and the sarcolemma, peripheral couplings, were present. The electrophysiological implications of the absence of transverse tubules are discussed. The cisternae of the couplings showed periodic tubular extensions toward the sarcolemma. A regularly spaced array of Z line-like material was observed, suggesting a possible mechanism for sarcomere growth.  相似文献

Summary The demonstration of glycogen by PAS-method and the reaction of phosphorylase by Takeuchi et al. were performed in the hearts of rats 30 min after experimental coronary occlusion. While the cardiac muscle cells in the center of the ischemic region still contained glycogen, the cells in the border zone of the infarction did not. The phosphorylase activity was demonstrable only in those cardiac muscle cells which contained glycogen. As well known that the demonstration of phosphorylase activity is possible only if glycogen as starter is present, it is concluded that the lack of phosphorylase activity by the histochemical reaction in cells which do not contain glycogen doesn't prove the absence of the enzyme.
