Members of the family Cimicidae (Heteroptera) are obligate haematophagous ectoparasites. The Cimex pipistrelli species group parasitizes on bats, the likely ancestral hosts of the whole family. Based on morphology, it was suggested that three species of the group were present in the West‐Palaearctic region, although their validity remained a matter of discussion. Surprisingly, the status of these species has not been studied from the point of view of host specificity. We examined the diversification of the species group using morphological data, including the putative diagnostic characters, and sequences of one mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase subunit I, COI) and four nuclear loci (internal transcribed spacer 2, 18S and 28s ribosomal genes and elongation factor 1 subunit α). This was carried out on a sample of 225 individuals from 69 bat roosts and 44 mist‐netted bats, altogether representing 12 bat species from 13 European countries and Lebanon. We revealed 27 mitochondrial haplotypes representing two distinct haplogroups and one outlying haplotype. The extent of morphological variability of specimens representing both haplogroups covers the range of characters reported for all three recognized species; therefore, the haplogroups clearly do not correspond to any described species. Also, the very limited variability found in the nuclear sequences of the cimicid bugs examined suggests that separate species do not exist in the region. We found considerable morphological differentiation among samples from different bat species, although individuals representing particular mitochondrial haplogroups often live sympatrically and on the same host species. It seems that batbugs are morphologically adapted to a particular bat host despite the low genetic structuring among individuals parasitizing different species of bats.  相似文献

Sex differences in suckling behaviour could be explained either by different maternal investment or by different behaviour of young. Previously, we found sex differences in rejection and termination of suckling bouts in captive plains zebras (Equus burchellii). In this study, we analysed the length of suckling bout interruptions and unsuccessful subsequent attempts which followed a successful suckling bout in plains zebra foals at Dvůr Králové Zoo. When a suckling bout was interrupted, male foals resumed the bout sooner than female foals. The probability of a subsequent attempt decreased with increasing age in female foals but did not change in male foals. These results demonstrate higher effort in suckling interest by male foals, who tried to suckle more than female foals. Although we found sex bias in the effort to suckle, which suggested higher parent–offspring conflict in male offspring, we cannot omit a sex bias in milk supply by the mother.  相似文献

The genera Dolichospermum (Ralfs ex Bornet et Flahault) Wacklin, L. Hoffm. et Komárek and Sphaerospermopsis Zapomělová, Jezberová, Hrouzek, Hisem, K. ?eháková et Komárk.‐Legn. represent a highly diversified group of planktonic cyanobacteria that have been recently separated from the traditional genus Anabaena Bory ex Bornet et Flahault. In this study, morphological diversity, phylogeny of the 16S rRNA gene, production of fatty acids, and secondary metabolite profiles were evaluated in 33 strains of 14 morphospecies isolated from the Czech Republic. Clustering of the strains based on 16S rRNA gene sequences corresponded to wider groups of species in terms of morphology. The overall secondary metabolite and fatty acid profiles, however, were not correlated to each other and neither were they correlated to the 16S rRNA phylogeny nor the morphology of the strains. Nevertheless, a minor part of the detected secondary metabolites (19% of all compounds) was present only in close relatives and can be thus considered as autapomorphic features.  相似文献

The complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of the neuropathogenic bird schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti was fully sequenced in order to develop molecular markers for future diagnostic, molecular ecological, population, and phylogenetic studies. The genome was 14,838 bp in length, with a 68.4% AT bias in protein coding regions. A repeat element (3 x 184 bp) between trnV and trnW distinguished a single short noncoding region. As 9 of 14 genera of schistosomes parasitize birds, future characterization of their mt genomes is desirable for species-specific and strain- or population-specific diagnostic markers; this concerns not only the nasal representatives, e.g., T. regenti characterized in this study, but also numerous species within the predominant group of visceral (blood dwelling) bird schistosomes.  相似文献

Three phycocyanin-rich strains of Synechococcus-like picoplanktic cyanobacteria, isolated from the plankton of Czech oligotrophic to eutrophic freshwater reservoirs, were investigated in crossed gradients of light and temperature and in combination with two different culture media (BG-11 and WC). The strains exhibited similar growth and reproduction patterns and displayed overlapping ranges of cell size (1.5 × 0.8 μm) under standardized laboratory conditions (18 μmol m−2 s−1; 20°C). However, strains behavior differed in the crossed gradients. All strains preferred BG-11 medium, where also remarkable size changes could be observed. Length, width, cell abundance and growth rate of two strains were positively correlated with temperature and nutrients, whereas the impact of light intensity was insignificant. Maximum cell elongation (involution cells up to 19 μm) occurred in two strains only in BG-11 medium at highest temperature (28°C) and highest irradiance (53 μmol m−2 s−1). Cell dimensions in WC medium were constant under most conditions given. The third strain was influenced by all three factors, from which light and nutrients played pivotal role. The length of the lag-phase for all strains appeared to be temperature dependent (negative correlation). Despite the fact that the cell volume in all strains increased more than five times under the lowest light and low temperature (6 μmol m−2 s−1, <15°C) in both media, the length/width ratio remained unchanged. The strains differed in the degree of cell enlargement and cell division symmetry as well as in optimum temperature and light dependence. Based on this experimental work two strains could be identified as Synechococcus sp. and one as Cyanobium sp., which can be used as a support for the following genetical analyses.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Quantitative enzyme-immunoassays of urinary and fecal immunoglobulin A (IgA), cortisol and 11-17-dioxoandrostanes (11,17-DOA), and serum cortisol in eight metabolic-cage-housed female cynomolgus monkeys were performed. The monkeys were divided into two groups, B and NB. Group B animals were blood sampled every 6 hours, whereas Group NB animals were not handled/blood sampled. RESULTS: No differences were recorded between the amounts of feces and urine excreted by the two groups. Group B animals excreted more urinary cortisol than did Group NB animals indicating that restraint-blood sampling resulted in a stress response. Excreted amounts of IgA and 11,17-DOA (urine and feces) did not differ between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Urinary cortisol was a reliable marker of the stress associated with repeated blood sampling. Declining amounts of excreted urinary cortisol indicated that cynomolgus monkeys acclimated quickly to repeated blood sampling in metabolism cages. Within and between animal variation in amounts of feces voided demonstrated the importance of expressing fecal markers as 'amounts excreted per time unit per kg body weight' rather than just measuring the concentrations in fecal samples.  相似文献

Creatine kinase (CK) (E.C. 2.7.3.2) buffers cellular ATP concentration during fluctuating ATP turnover. Muscle cytosolic CK isoform interacts with various subcellular structures where it is functionally coupled with relevant ATPases. However, how this interaction affects its activity is not known. We have therefore studied the interaction of CK with myofibrils and the role of different conformational states of CK molecule induced by ATP, phosphocreatine, ADP and the ATP-creatine pair. Purified rabbit psoas myofibrils with CK specific activity of 0.4 ± 0.02 IU/mg were used. The exchange rates between the myofibrillar M-band and its surroundings were measured with fluorofore conjugated CK (IAF) by the Fluorescence Lost in Photobleaching (FLIP) method within a very narrow pH range 7.1–7.15. For CK-IAF without docked substrates, the time derivative of the initial loss of the fluorescent signal within the M-band equalled −3.26 at the fifth second and the decrease reached 82% by the 67th second. For CK-IAF with added substrates, the derivatives fell into the range of −0.95 to −1.30, with respective decreases from 16 to 46% at the 67th second. The results show that the substrates slowed down the exchange rate. This indicates that the strength of the bond between CK and the M-band of myofibrils increased.  相似文献
