Background

Male circumcision (MC) has been shown to reduce the risk of female to male transmission of HIV. The goal of this survey was to explore the acceptability of MC among the Chinese and to identify factors associated with circumcision preference.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted between September 2009 and December 2010. We interviewed 2,219 male community participants, from three high HIV prevalence provinces in western China. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on MC knowledge, willingness to accept MC, reasons to accept or refuse MC, and sexual behaviors and health. For those who refused MC, a health education intervention providing information on the benefits of circumcision was conducted. We used multiple logistic regression models to identify factors associated with the acceptability of MC.

Results

Of the respondents (n = 2,219), 44.6% (989/2,219) reported they would accept MC for the following reasons: promotion of female partners'' hygiene (60.3%), redundant foreskin (59.4%), prevention of penile cancer (50.2%), enhanced sexual pleasure (41.4%), and protection against HIV and STDs (34.2%). The multivariable logistic regression showed that five factors were associated with MC willingness: long foreskin (OR = 15.98), residing in Xinjiang province (OR = 3.69), being younger than 25 (OR = 1.60), knowing hazards of redundant foreskin (OR = 1.78), and having a friend who underwent circumcision (OR = 1.36).

Conclusion

The acceptability of male circumcision was high among the general population in China. Our study elucidates the factors associated with circumcision preference and suggests that more health education campaigns about positive health effects are necessary to increase the MC rate in China.  相似文献

本研究在前期工作基础上,用CHO细胞表达的含PreS1+S融合抗原的新型基因工程HBV颗粒疫苗(HBSS1)与Al(OH)3、CpG及CpG+Al(OH)3等佐剂配伍,在Balb/C小鼠模型上研究不同佐剂对HBV颗粒疫苗肌肉注射后免疫应答的影响,主要包括抗体滴度、抗体亚型分类及特异性细胞免疫(γ-IFNELISpot检测)。结果表明:CpG佐剂结合HBSS1颗粒疫苗可快速诱导(单针免疫)高水平的抗PreS1及S抗体,IgG2a/IgG1比率1,同时可诱导较高抗原特异的细胞免疫应答;Al(OH)3+CpG双佐剂组一次免疫后可诱导产生最高的抗S抗体滴度(1:105),其产生的抗体亚类包括IgG1、IgG2a与IgG2b;在S抗原N端(13~49aa)存在优势CTL表位。结论:CpG佐剂结合HBSS1颗粒疫苗应是发展新型治疗性乙肝疫苗的较佳选项。  相似文献

Litter decomposition is an important ecosystem process regulated by both biotic factors (e.g., decomposers and litter types) and abiotic factors (e.g., temperature and moisture). This study examined the regulatory effects of soil fauna and microclimate on decomposition of two substrates (Castanopsis carlesii and Pinus taiwanensis) along an elevation gradient in four ecosystems of zonal vegetation types in southeastern China: evergreen broadleaf forest (EVB), coniferous forest (COF), dwarf forest (DWF), and alpine meadow (ALM). Our objective was to identify the mechanisms by which microclimate, substrate, and fauna control litter decomposition, especially where variations in ecosystem structure and environment are markedly shown across an elevation gradient. The hypotheses were as follows: (1) litter decomposition within the same litter type would decrease across the elevation gradient, (2) litter decomposition would be lower in poorer nutrient quality substrate across the four sites, and (3) litter dynamics, influenced by strong interactions among ecosystem type, litter type, and decomposers, would vary by elevation gradient due to microclimate effects (i.e., temperature and moisture). The decomposition rates of C. carlesii were significantly higher than those of P. taiwanensis at EVB, COF, and DWF sites; however, they were not significantly different at the ALM site. Low elevation forests possessed a microclimate (warm and humid) that favors decomposer activities and also appeared to possess a decomposer community adapted to consuming large amounts of leaf litter, as indicated by the rapid leaf litter loss. Litter decomposition in micro-mesh bags proceeded more slowly compared to litter in meso-mesh and macro-mesh litterbags across the elevation gradient, indicating that restricting some detritivore access to litter reduced litter mass loss. We suggest that microclimate and faunal contributions to plant litter decomposition differ markedly across the ecosystems in the Wuyi Mountains.  相似文献

We present an optimal control model of drug treatment of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Our model is based upon ordinary differential equations that describe the interaction between HIV and the specific immune response as measured by levels of natural killer cells. We establish stability results for the model. We approach the treatment problem by posing it as an optimal control problem in which we maximise the benefit based on levels of healthy CD4+ T cells and immune response cells, less the systemic cost of chemotherapy. To compare the role of nitric oxide in an adaptive process to chronic hypoxia, we examined the effects of endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibition on pulmonary vascular tone in conscious sheep and pigs living at high altitude. Unanesthetized male sheep (n=6) and pigs (n=5), born and residing in the highlands of Qinghai Province, China (2,300–3,000 m a.s.l.) were studied at that altitude. Pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa), pulmonary artery wedge pressure (Pcwp), and cardiac output (CO) were measured. Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) was calculated as (PpaPcwp)/CO. Using a climatic chamber, hemodynamic measurements during exposures to atmospheric pressures corresponding to altitudes of 0, 2,300, and 4,500 m a.s.l. were performed with and without NO inhibition, using Nw-nitro-l-argine (NLA; 20 mg kg–1), a potent stereospecific competitive inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase. Ppa and PVR at baseline (2,300 m) and during hypoxic exposure (4,500 m) were significantly higher in pigs than in sheep. After NLA administration, Ppa increased and CO decreased in both animals, resulting in significantly increased PVR at baseline and during hypoxic exposure. However, there were no significant differences in the percent increase in basal or hypoxic PVR after NLA administration between sheep and pigs. We conclude that augmented endogenous NO production could contribute to the regulation of pulmonary vascular tone at high altitude in sheep and pigs. However, it is unlikely that NO is responsible for the different pulmonary vascular tones between sheep and pigs at basal condition at moderately high altitude.Communicated by G. Heldmaier  相似文献

An oligo-leucine sequence has previously been shown to function as an artificial transmembrane segment that efficiently self-assembles in membranes and in detergent solution. Here, a novel technique, asparagine-scanning mutagenesis, was applied to probe the interface of the self-assembled oligo-leucine domain. This novel approach identifies interfacial residues whose exchange to asparagine leads to enhanced self-interaction of transmembrane helices by interhelical hydrogen bond formation. As analyzed by the ToxR system in membranes, the interface formed by the oligo-leucine domain is based on a leucine-zipper-like heptad repeat pattern of amino acids. In general, the strongest impacts on self-assembly were seen with asparagines located around the center of the sequence, indicating that interaction is be more efficient here than at the termini of the transmembrane domains.  相似文献

AIMS: The objective of this work was to express a novel mel gene, responsible for melanin formation, in Bacillus thuringiensis. METHODS AND RESULTS: A novel mel gene from Pseudomonas maltophilia was sub-cloned into B. thuringiensis using a shuttle vector plasmid and electroporation. Results revealed that the mel gene was expressed under the control of the CryIIIA promoter in B. thuringiensis and conferred u.v. protection on the recipient strain. CONCLUSIONS: The novel mel gene from Ps. maltophilia expressed in B. thuringiensis conferred u.v. protection on the recipient strain. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Products containing B. thuringiensis for pest control are sensitive to u.v. degradation. As melanin has the ability to act as a u.v. absorber, a recombinant B. thuringiensis strain producing melanin provides a new stability for B. thuringiensis preparations.  相似文献

Monomethylamine methyltransferase of the archaeon Methanosarcina barkeri contains a rare amino acid, pyrrolysine, encoded by the termination codon UAG. Translation of this UAG requires the aminoacylation of the corresponding amber suppressor tRNAPyl. Previous studies reported that tRNAPyl could be aminoacylated by the synthetase-like protein PylS. We now show that tRNAPyl is efficiently aminoacylated in the presence of both the class I LysRS and class II LysRS of M. barkeri, but not by either enzyme acting alone or by PylS. In vitro studies show that both the class I and II LysRS enzymes must bind tRNAPyl in order for the aminoacylation reaction to proceed. Structural modeling and selective inhibition experiments indicate that the class I and II LysRSs form a ternary complex with tRNAPyl, with the aminoacylation activity residing in the class II enzyme.  相似文献

New technologies are needed to characterize the migration, survival, and function of antigen-specific T cells in vivo. Here, we demonstrate that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)--specific T cells transduced with vectors encoding herpes simplex virus-1 thymidine kinase (HSV-TK) selectively accumulate radiolabeled 2'-fluoro-2'-deoxy-1-beta-D-arabinofuranosyl-5-iodouracil (FIAU). After adoptive transfer, HSV-TK+ T cells labeled in vitro or in vivo with [131I]FIAU or [124I]FIAU can be noninvasively tracked in SCID mice bearing human tumor xenografts by serial images obtained by scintigraphy or positron emission tomography (PET), respectively. These T cells selectively accumulate in EBV+ tumors expressing the T cells' restricting HLA allele but not in EBV- or HLA-mismatched tumors. The concentrations of transduced T cells detected in tumors and tissues are closely correlated with the concentrations of label retained at each site. Radiolabeled transduced T cells retain their capacity to eliminate targeted tumors selectively. This technique for imaging the migration of ex vivo-transduced antigen-specific T cells in vivo is informative, nontoxic, and potentially applicable to humans.  相似文献
