Phylogeny of haplo‐diploid, fungus‐growing ambrosia beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae: Xyleborini) inferred from molecular and morphological data. —Zoologica Scripta, 40, 174–186. The ambrosia beetle tribe Xyleborini currently contains 30 genera and approximately 1200 species which are distributed throughout worldwide forests with most diversity located in the tropics. They also represent the most invasive scolytines in North America. Despite economic concerns and biological curiosity with this group, a comprehensive understanding of generic boundaries and the evolutionary relationship among species is lacking. In this study, we include 155 xyleborine species representing 23 genera in parsimony and Bayesian analyses using 3925 nucleotides from mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear genomes (28S, ArgK, CAD, EF‐1α) and 39 morphological characters. The phylogenies resulting from the parsimony analyses, which treated gap positions either as missing or fifth character states, and the Bayesian analysis were generally similar. Clades with high support or posterior probabilities were found in all trees, while those with low support were not recovered by all analyses. Fourteen of the 23 genera were monophyletic although not all relationships among the genera were resolved. We show monophyly of several species groups associated with particular morphological and biological characters and suggest recognition of these groups as genera. Most interesting was the monophyly of South and Central American species representing several genera. This finding suggests recent and fast radiation of xyleborines in the New World accompanied by morphological and biological diversification.  相似文献

Rapid degradation of pyrogenic carbon   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Pyrogenic carbon (PC‐ charcoal, biochar or black carbon) represents a poorly understood component of the global carbon (C) cycle, but one that has considerable potential to mitigate climate change through provision of long‐term soil C sequestration. Mass balance calculations suggest global PC production and stocks are not in balance, indicating a major gap in our understanding of the processes by which PC is re‐mineralized. We collected PC samples derived from the same wood material and exposed to natural environmental conditions for 1 and 11 years. We subjected these materials to repeated laboratory incubation studies at temperatures of up to 60 °C, as ground surface temperatures above 30 °C and up to 60 °C occur regularly over a significant area of the tropics and sub‐tropics. Mineralization rates were not different for the two samples and followed an exponential Arrhenius function that suggest an average turnover time of 67 years for conditions typical of a tropical savannah environment. Microbial biomass as measured by chloroform fumigation and DNA extractions was the same for the two samples, but abiotic CO2 production was lower for the fresh PC sample than that for the aged sample. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, hydrogen pyrolysis and scanning electron microscopy demonstrate that the measured CO2 production originates dominantly from polycyclic aromatic compounds rather than any minor labile components. Therefore, rapid, sub‐centennial rates of re‐mineralization of PC on the soil surface in tropical and sub‐tropical environments may represent a major and hitherto unidentified mechanism for balancing the PC production at the global scale.  相似文献

Advances in the treatment of coronary artery disease have seen a significant drop in mortality and morbidity particularly amongst patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI). In particular, percutaneous trans-luminal balloon angioplasty (PTCA) with stenting to re-open atherosclerotic coronary arteries has yielded marked improvement in clinical outcome for patients with acute MI. Furthermore, with the advent of drug-eluting stents occurrence rates for coronary artery restenosis, one common clinical problem associated with angioplasty and stent deployment, have declined markedly. However, coronary restenosis in diabetic patients remains an on-going problem. The success of drug-eluting stents has seen a renewed focus on myocardial ischaemia reperfusion (IR) injury as this represents one area of research where many questions remain unanswered. In particular, the relationship between myocardial IR injury and decreased myocardial micro-vasculature re-flow post PTCA (that ultimately leads to poor clinical outcome and myocardial damage/dysfunction) is one area of research with the potential to decrease current complication rates further in patients suffering myocardial IR injury sustained during MI. This review discusses the role for oxidative stress, oxidant source(s) and both gene regulation and stem-cell therapy as potential strategic targets in the ischaemic myocardium, with the ultimate aim of providing significant cardioprotection in the setting of acute MI.  相似文献
