Mechanisms governing placement and retrieval of scatter hoards were investigated in 13-lined ground squirrels ( Spermophilus tridecemlineatus ). The squirrels used several placement tactics, including relatively deep burial of seeds, avoidance of prominent objects, and cryptic placement, which would reduce chance discovery by competitors but that might also increase the difficulty of retrieval for the hoarder. Nevertheless, scatter hoards were unfailingly retrieved within a day or two after placement, despite experimental elimination or displacement of local sensory cues emanating from the sites. Artificial caches placed close to true caches were not discovered, indicating that recovery attempts were quite precise. These results imply that 13-lined ground squirrels rely heavily on spatial memory for retrieval and are the first experimental demonstration of the importance of memory for cache recovery in a natural population of mammals.  相似文献

The structural proteins of Autographa californica (AcMNPV) and Heliothis zea (HzSNPV) nuclear polyhedrosis viruses were detected by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The immunoassay detected less than 1 ng of AcMNPV protein. The extent of immunological relatedness between AcMNPV-occluded virus and AcMNPV polyhedral protein, AcMNPV-nonoccluded virus, Estigmene acrea granulosis virus, Amsacta moorei entomopoxvirus Heliothis zea NPV, and Lymantria dispar NPV was determined. No immunological relatedless was detected between HzSNPV, AcMNPV, and a persistent rod-shaped virus isolated from the Heliothis zea cell line (IMC-Hz-1). The polyhedral proteins of HzSNPV and AcMNPV were found to be immunologically identical.  相似文献

"Cone dystrophy with supernormal rod electroretinogram (ERG)" is an autosomal recessive disorder that causes lifelong visual loss combined with a supernormal ERG response to a bright flash of light. We have linked the disorder to a 0.98-cM (1.5-Mb) region on chromosome 9p24, flanked by rs1112534 and rs1074449, using homozygosity mapping in one large consanguineous pedigree. Analysis of one gene within this region, KCNV2, showed a homozygous nonsense mutation. Mutations were also found in 17 alleles of 10 other unrelated families with the same disorder. In situ hybridization demonstrated KCNV2 expression in human rod and cone photoreceptors. The precise function of KCNV2 in human photoreceptors remains to be determined, although this work suggests that mutations might perturb or abrogate I(KX), the potassium current within vertebrate photoreceptor inner segments, which has been shown to set their resting potential and voltage response.  相似文献

Adaptations to the humeral torsion angle have been identified in the professional throwing athlete. This movement pattern increases the humeral torsion angle, and also increases the extent of external rotation movements in the dominant, throwing limb when compared with the nondominant limb. The purpose of this paper is to test the hypothesis that the humeral torsion angle is an adaptation to upper limb use. This project examines the humeral torsion angle in a number of medieval British populations, as well as a modern cadaver-based sample. The results identify significant differences in the humeral torsion angle both between and within male (P < 0.001, ANOVA) and female (P < 0.014, ANOVA) populations, although the results are not consistent with expected behavior patterns. Statistically significant differences between males and females within the same site were identified in 2 of the 5 samples examined. The mean level of bilateral asymmetry does not approach that reported for the professional throwing athlete. However, a number of individuals have high levels of asymmetry in excess of that identified in the professional throwing athlete. This analysis demonstrates the need for individual rather than population-based analyses, as the heterogeneity within population samples obscures individual variation in activity patterns. The diversity within British medieval society and a lack of specific known behaviors prevent further identification of the functional significance of the humeral torsion angle within the archaeological record examined here.  相似文献

The Myrothamnus flabellifolius leaf cell wall and its response to desiccation were investigated using electron microscopic, biochemical, and immunocytochemical techniques. Electron microscopy revealed desiccation-induced cell wall folding in the majority of mesophyll and epidermal cells. Thick-walled vascular tissue and sclerenchymous ribs did not fold and supported the surrounding tissue, thereby limiting the extent of leaf shrinkage and allowing leaf morphology to be rapidly regained upon rehydration. Isolated cell walls from hydrated and desiccated M. flabellifolius leaves were fractionated into their constituent polymers and the resulting fractions were analyzed for monosaccharide content. Significant differences between hydrated and desiccated states were observed in the water-soluble buffer extract, pectin fractions, and the arabinogalactan protein-rich extract. A marked increase in galacturonic acid was found in the alkali-insoluble pectic fraction. Xyloglucan structure was analyzed and shown to be of the standard dicotyledonous pattern. Immunocytochemical analysis determined the cellular location of the various epitopes associated with cell wall components, including pectin, xyloglucan, and arabinogalactan proteins, in hydrated and desiccated leaf tissue. The most striking observation was a constitutively present high concentration of arabinose, which was associated with pectin, presumably in the form of arabinan polymers. We propose that the arabinan-rich leaf cell wall of M. flabellifolius possesses the necessary structural properties to be able to undergo repeated periods of desiccation and rehydration.  相似文献

The introduction and wide use of antibacterial drugs has resulted in the emergence of resistant organisms. DfrB dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is a bacterial enzyme that is uniquely associated with mobile gene cassettes within integrons, and confers resistance to the drug trimethoprim. This enzyme has intrigued microbiologists since it was discovered more than thirty years ago because of its simple structure, enzymatic inefficiency and its virtual insensitivity to trimethoprim. Here, for the first time, a comprehensive discussion of genetic, evolutionary, structural and functional studies of this enzyme is presented together. This information supports the ideas that DfrB DHFR is a poorly adapted catalyst and has recently been recruited to perform a novel enzymatic activity in response to selective pressure.  相似文献
