Summary Natal philopatry and recruitment were measured in two populations of willow ptarmigan; one near Churchill, Manitoba and the other in northwestern British Columbia. We examined the return of tagged offspring in subsequent years with respect to geographical area, annual variation, their age when tagged, their sex, their body weight, age and number of their parents, and time of hatch (first nest or renest). Most chicks were tagged before they fledged, but chicks tagged after that had the highest rate of return. We also observed a strong positive relationship between fledging success of broods and offspring return in following years.Patterns of offspring return were similar in both populations except that male offspring in Manitoba settled closer to their natal sites than those in British Columbia and more yearling captured in Manitoba had been tagged as chicks. Return of offspring did not vary with year, their body weights shortly after hatch, or with the age or number of parents raising them. However, a significantly higher proportion of offspring hatched from first nests (first-initiated clutches) returned compared to those hatched from renests (replacement clutches). The low return of chicks hatched from renests may due to low survival, low philopatry, or both. We observed no differences in the mating status (recruitment) of returning offspring with respect to the time they hatched or the number of parents that raised them.  相似文献

In a longitudinal prospective study of 1,529 women pregnant in 1974-1975, aspirin and acetaminophen were the two medications most frequently taken during the first half of pregnancy (46 and 41%, respectively). In a selected cohort of 421 offspring of these women, examined at 4 years of age, maternal aspirin use during the first half of pregnancy was significantly related to IQ and attention decrements in the exposed children. Multiple regression analyses were used to statistically adjust for a variety of potentially confounding factors including demographic characteristics, child characteristics, other exposures, and lifestyle/environmental variables. Continuous dose-response and step-function parameterizations of aspirin exposure were both statistically significant and not clearly distinguishable from each other. The estimated aspirin effect is significantly greater for girls than boys. Aspirin effects on offspring function were found in the absence of effects on physical size both at birth and at 4 years. Maternal acetaminophen use was not significantly related to child IQ or attention. As this exploratory research originated from observations of a data set gathered for other purposes, it would be desirable to have these findings replicated in other studies. Further follow-up of the children at a later age is planned.  相似文献

The literature concerning the metabolism of carbon and nitrogen compounds in ectomycorrhizal associations of trees is reviewed. The absorption and translocation of mineral ions by the mycelia require an energy source and a reductant which are both supplied by respiratory catabolism of carbohydrates produced by the host plant. Photosynthates are also required to generate the carbon skeletons for amino acid and carbohydrate syntheses during the growth of the mycelia. Competition for photosynthates occurs between the fungal cells and the various vegetative sinks in the host tree. The nature of carbon compounds involved in these processes, their routes of metabolism, the mechanisms of control and the partitioning of metabolites between the various sites of utilization are only poorly understood. Both ascomycetous and basidiomycetous ectomycorrhizal fungi synthesize and some, if not all, accumulate mannitol, trehalose and triglycerides. The fungal strains employ the Embden--Meyerhof pathway of glucose catabolism and the key enzymes of the pentose phosphate pathway (6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, transaldolase and transketolase). Anaplerotic CO2 fixation, via pyruvate carboxylase and/or phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, provides high pools of amino acids. This process could be important in the recapture and assimilation of respired CO2 in the rhizosphere. The ectomycorrhizas are thought to contain the Embden--Meyerhof pathway, the pentose phosphate pathway and the tricarboxylic acid cycle, which provide the carbon skeletons for the assimilation of ammonia into amino acids. The main route of assimilation of ammonia appears to be through the glutamine synthetase-glutamate synthase cycle in the ectomycorrhizas. Glutamate dehydrogenase plays a minor role in this process. Glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthetase are present in free-living ectomycorrhizal fungi and they participate in the assimilation of ammonia and the synthesis of amino acids through the glutamate dehydrogenase/glutamine synthetase sequence. In both in vitro cultures of fungi and ectomycorrhizas, the assimilated nitrogen accumulates in glutamine. Glutamine, but also ammonia, are thought to be exported from the fungal tissues to the host cells. Studies on the metabolism of ectomycorrhizas and ectomycorrhizal fungi have focused on the metabolic pathways and compounds which accumulate in the symbiotic tissues. The influence of a varied sucrose supply on grain size and hormonal contents of detached wheat ears ( Triticwn aestivum L. cv. Schirokko) was investigated throughout grain development. In ears led limited amounts, or no sucrose, grain weights in both proximal and distal grain positions of the ear were reduced. Radioimmunoassay for abscisic acid, indoleacetic acid and zeatin/zeatin riboside showed that the changes in the levels of these hormones in grains and bracts were comparable to intact ears when detached ears were well supplied with sucrose. Under conditions of limited sucrose supply, higher abscisic acid levels in the distal and proximal grains of detached ears were found compared to ears supplied with adequate sucrose. Limiting sucrose supply to the ear did not alter the levels of indoleacetic acid or zeatin/zeatin riboside in either the grains or bracts of detached ears.  相似文献

A phase I trial of interleukin-2 and interferon gamma combination treatment in patients with advanced malignancies was performed based on preclinical in vitro and in vivo data which demonstrated synergistic antitumor effect. The toxicities, immune parameters, and tumor responses are described. The clinical and biologic maximal tolerated doses were extrapolated from these data.  相似文献

Evidence is presented for the synaptic connectivity between a physiologically characterized and intracellularly filled GABAergic interneuron and a corticotectal pyramidal neuron in area 17 of the cat visual cortex. The interneuron was located in layer 4 and had the morphological characteristics of a clutch cell. The physiological data demonstrated that the clutch cell received direct X-type innervation from the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus. These results indicate that a GABAergic neuron is directly involved during the first cortical stages of geniculocorticotectal interactions. Furthermore, the proximal location of the clutch-cell inputs to the labelled dendrite suggests a strategic siting of intracortical feedforward inhibition.  相似文献
