The importance of oxygen availability in the embryonation of the infective egg stages of the gastrointestinal nematode parasite Heterakis gallinarum was studied in the laboratory. Unembryonated H. gallinarum eggs were kept under either aerobic conditions by gassing with oxygen, or anaerobic conditions by gassing with the inert gas nitrogen, under a range of constant temperatures. Oxygenated eggs embryonated at a rate influenced by temperature. Conversely, eggs treated with nitrogen showed no embryonation although when these eggs were transferred from nitrogen to oxygen gas after 60 days of treatment, embryonation occurred. This demonstrated that oxygen is an essential requirement for H. gallinarum egg development, although undeveloped eggs remain viable, even after 60 days in low oxygen conditions. The effects of climate on the biology of free-living stages studied under constant laboratory conditions cannot be applied directly to the field where climatic factors exhibit daily cycles. The effect of fluctuating temperature on development was investigated by including an additional temperature group in which H. gallinarum eggs were kept under daily temperature cycles between 12 and 22°C. Cycles caused eggs to develop significantly earlier than those in the constant mean cycle temperature, 17°C, but significantly slower than those in constant 22°C suggesting that daily temperature cycles had an accelerating effect on H. gallinarum egg embryonation but did not accelerate to the higher temperature. These results suggest that daily fluctuations in temperature influence development of the free-living stages and so development cannot be accurately predicted on the basis of constant temperature culture.  相似文献

1. Simple mechanical models (random walks and the 'gas model') were used to investigate the movement patterns and intergroup encounter rates of a high- and low-density subpopulation of Grey-Cheeked Mangabeys ( Cercocebus albigena johnstoni, Lydeker) at two sites in the Kibale Forest, Western Uganda.
2. Random walk simulations showed that the presence of conspecific groups could act as 'social barriers' which constrained group movements, and promoted high levels of site attachment to a specific home range area.
3. Encounter rate models showed that in the low-density subpopulation (Kanyawara), intergroup encounters occurred no more frequently than expected if groups were moving randomly and independently of each other. This was in contrast to previous analyses which suggested that Grey-Cheeked Mangabeys employed a social spacing mechanism (mediated by male loud calls) in order to reduce the frequency of encounter to below chance levels.
4. Encounters in the high-density subpopulation (Ngogo) were found to occur less frequently than expected at short range (within 100 m). This was suggested to be due to the operation of a territorial mate defence strategy by males at this site.  相似文献

The occurrence of shallow-water (0.9 to 1.3 m) rhodoliths in back reef environments in southwest Puerto Rico is reported. The rhodoliths were generally cylindrical, discoidal or irregular in shape with an average longest dimension of 7.2 cm. They occurred at a maximum density of 524 m−2. The rhodoliths were composed of mostly coral nuclei with concentric laminations of aragonite-producing Cruoriella armorica (Peyssonneliaceae, Rhodophyta). Maximum Cruoriella accretion around coral nuclei was 30 mm although accretions of 1 to 20 mm were more common. Based on measurements of Cruoriella accretion, these shallow water rhodoliths are estimated to have minimum ages of 12 to 24 years. Heat stress reduces maize yield and several lines of evidence suggest that the heat lability of maize endosperm ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGPase) contributes to this yield loss. AGPase catalyzes a rate-limiting step in starch synthesis. Herein, we present a novel maize endosperm AGPase small subunit variant, termed BT2-TI that harbors a single amino acid change of residue 462 from threonine to isoleucine. The mutant was isolated by random mutagenesis and heterologous expression in a bacterial system. BT2-TI exhibits enhanced heat stability compared to wildtype maize endosperm AGPase.The TI mutation was placed into another heat-stable small subunit variant, MP. MP is composed of sequences from the maize endosperm and the potato tuber small subunit. The MP-TI small subunit variant exhibited greater heat stability than did MP. Characterization of heat stability as well as kinetic and allosteric properties suggests that MP-TI may lead to increased starch yield when expressed in monocot endosperms.  相似文献

Aim It is a central issue in ecology and biogeography to understand what governs community assembly and the maintenance of biodiversity in tropical rain forest ecosystems. A key question is the relative importance of environmental species sorting (niche assembly) and dispersal limitation (dispersal assembly), which we investigate using a large dataset from diverse palm communities. Location Lowland rain forest, western Amazon River Basin, Peru. Methods We inventoried palm communities, registering all palm individuals and recording environmental conditions in 149 transects of 5 m × 500 m. We used ordination, Mantel tests and indicator species analysis (ISA) to assess compositional patterns, species responses to geographical location and environmental factors. Mantel tests were used to assess the relative importance of geographical distance (as a proxy for dispersal limitation) and environmental differences as possible drivers of dissimilarity in palm species composition. We repeated the Mantel tests for subsets of species that differ in traits of likely importance for habitat specialization and dispersal (height and range size). Results We found a strong relationship between compositional dissimilarity and environmental distance and a weaker but also significant relationship between compositional dissimilarity and geographical distance. Consistent with expectations, relationships with environmental and geographical distance were stronger for understorey species than for canopy species. Geographical distance had a higher correlation with compositional dissimilarity for small‐ranged species compared with large‐ranged species, whereas the opposite was true for environmental distance. The main environmental correlates were inundation and soil nutrient levels. Main conclusions The assembly of palm communities in the western Amazon appears to be driven primarily by species sorting according to hydrology and soil, but with dispersal limitation also playing an important role. The importance of environmental characteristics and geographical distance varies depending on plant height and geographical range size in agreement with functional predictions, increasing our confidence in the inferred assembly mechanisms.  相似文献
