The ability of Homo sapiens to kill prey at a distance is arguably one of the catalysts for our current ecological dominance. Many researchers have suggested its origins lie in the African Middle Stone Age or the European Middle Palaeolithic (~300‐30 thousand years ago), but the perishable components of armatures rarely preserve. Most research on this subject therefore emphasises analysis of armature tip size, shape, and diagnostic impacts or residues. Other lines of evidence have included human skeletal anatomy or analyses of the species composition of faunal assemblages. Projectile Impact Marks (PIMs) on archaeofaunal remains offer an ideal complement to this work, but their potential has been restricted mainly to the later Eurasian zooarchaeological record. A review of current evidence and approaches shows that systematic PIM research could add much to our understanding of early projectile technology, especially in Africa. 相似文献
In 2012 and 2015, blooms of Alexandrium tamarense occurred in Tasmania, Australia, and paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) were identified in the hepatopancreas of Southern Rock Lobsters. The human health risk was unclear, because consumption data were not available for lobster hepatopancreas. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the types of lobster tissues consumed, hepatopancreas portion size, and consumption format (boiled, steamed, raw, etc.), for Tasmanian and South Australian recreational harvesters.
A significant proportion of harvesters (15%) eat lobster hepatopancreas, with the majority consuming it as a dipping sauce for cooked (boiled or steamed) lobster meat. Two different methods were used to estimate portion size, a recollection-based food consumption questionnaire (FCQ) and a prospective Food Diary – mean portion size estimates showed good agreement: 3.4 g and 4.8 g, respectively. These results are critical for assessing the exposure of recreational harvesters to acute contaminants, such as PST, in lobster hepatopancreas. Results from the FCQ showed that lobster hepatopancreas is not consumed as often as white meat, suggesting that exposure to contaminants in hepatopancreas may be less frequent than white meat. This should be considered when evaluating human health risk from repeated or long term (chronic) exposure to contaminants in lobsters. 相似文献
The Corey-Bakshi-Shibata (CBS) catalyst provides an efficient mechanism to reduce ketones and achieve desired enantiopure alcohols. Herein, the diastereoselective reduction of C-2′ and C-3′-keto ribofuranoside derivatives to the corresponding arabino- and xylofuranosides in greater than 95% diastereomeric excess is reported. The stereo-directed substitution with an azido group as well as the synthesis of prodrugs cytarabine and vidarabine are also described. The reported strategy offers superior diastereoselectivity, shorter reaction times, and obviates cooling required with comparable protocols involving achiral reductants. 相似文献
Around the world, human populations have experienced large increases in average lifespan over the last 150 years, and while individuals are living longer, they are spending more years of life with multiple chronic morbidities. Researchers have used numerous laboratory animal models to understand the biological and environmental factors that influence aging, morbidity, and longevity. However, the most commonly studied animal species, laboratory mice and rats, do not experience environmental conditions similar to those to which humans are exposed, nor do we often diagnose them with many of the naturally occurring pathologies seen in humans. Recently, the companion dog has been proposed as a powerful model to better understand the genetic and environmental determinants of morbidity and mortality in humans. However, it is not known to what extent the age‐related dynamics of morbidity, comorbidity, and mortality are shared between humans and dogs. Here, we present the first large‐scale comparison of human and canine patterns of age‐specific morbidity and mortality. We find that many chronic conditions that commonly occur in human populations (obesity, arthritis, hypothyroidism, and diabetes), and which are associated with comorbidities, are also associated with similarly high levels of comorbidity in companion dogs. We also find significant similarities in the effect of age on disease risk in humans and dogs, with neoplastic, congenital, and metabolic causes of death showing similar age trajectories between the two species. Overall, our study suggests that the companion dog may be an ideal translational model to study the many complex facets of human morbidity and mortality. 相似文献
The delineation of intraspecific units that are evolutionarily and demographically distinct is an important step in the development of species-specific management plans. Neutral genetic variation has served as the primary data source for delineating “evolutionarily significant units,” but with recent advances in genomic technology, we now have an unprecedented ability to utilize information about neutral and adaptive variation across the entire genome. Here, we use traditional genetic markers (microsatellites) and a newer reduced-representation genomic approach (single nucleotide polymorphisms) to delineate distinct groups of white-tailed ptarmigan (Lagopus leucura), an alpine-obligate species that is distributed in naturally fragmented habitats from Alaska to New Mexico. Five subspecies of white-tailed ptarmigan are currently recognized but their distinctiveness has not been verified with molecular data. Based on analyses of 436 samples at 12 microsatellite loci and 95 samples at 14,866 single nucleotide polymorphism loci, we provide strong support for treating two subspecies as distinct intraspecific units—L. l. altipetens, found in Colorado and neighboring states; and L. l. saxatilis, found on British Columbia’s Vancouver Island—but our findings reveal more moderate patterns of divergence within the remainder of the species’ range. Results based on genetic and genomic datasets generally agreed with one another, indicating that in many cases microsatellite loci may be sufficient for describing major patterns of genetic structure across species’ ranges. This work will inform future conservation and management decisions for the white-tailed ptarmigan, a species that may be vulnerable to future changes in climate. 相似文献
Anthropogenic influences have dramatically altered the environments with which primates interact. In particular, the introduction of anthropogenic food sources to primate groups has implications for feeding behaviour, social behaviour, activity budgets, demography and life history. While the incorporation of anthropogenic foods can be beneficial to primates in a variety of nutritional ways including increased energetic return, they also carry risks associated with proximity to humans, such as risk of being hunted, disease risk and risk of conflict. Given such risks, we initiated a 3‐year study where we sought to understand the underlying nutritional motivations for anthropogenic food resource use by vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) in the humanized matrix surrounding the Nabugabo Field Station in central Uganda. Feeding effort, defined as proportion of feeding scans spent on anthropogenic food, was not associated with ripe fruit availability nor with crop availability as determined by phenological monitoring. Likewise, there was no difference in the protein, fibre, or lipid composition of crop food items compared to wild food items. Individuals spent less time feeding overall in months over the 3 years with a higher proportion of time spent feeding on crop foods, suggesting a potential benefit in terms of accessibility (reduction in the proportion of activity budget devoted to feeding). 相似文献
Play behaviors and signals during playful interactions with juvenile conspecifics are important for both the social and cognitive development of young animals. The social organization of a species can also influence juvenile social play. We examined the relationships among play behaviors, candidate play signals, and play bout termination in Tibetan macaques(Macaca thibetana) during juvenile and infant social play to characterize the species play style. As Tibetan macaques are despotic and live in groups with strict linear dominance hierarchies and infrequent reconciliation, we predicted that play would be at risk of misinterpretation by both the individuals engaged in the play bout and by those watching, possibly leading to injury of the players. Animals living in such societies might need to frequently and clearly signal playful intent to play partners and other group members to avoid aggressive outcomes. We gathered video data on 21 individually-identified juvenile and infant macaques(one month to five years of age)from the Valley of the Wild Monkeys, Mt. Huangshan,China. We used all-occurrence sampling to record play behaviors and candidate play signals based on an ethogram. We predicted that play groups would use multiple candidate play signals in a variety of contexts and in association with the number of audience members in proximity to the players and play bout length. In the 283 playful interactions we scored, juvenile and infant macaques used multiple body and facial candidate play signals. Our data showed that juvenile and infant Tibetan macaques use a versatile repertoire of play behaviors and signals to sustain play. 相似文献
