Some properties of transitions generated during an imprecise replication of nucleic acids are described here. A possible role of these transitions in the evolution of the genetic code with respect to the evolution of the tertiary structure of proteins is suggested. The data supporting this hypothesis are obtained from the analysis of certain regularities present in the genetic code and in the proportions of amino acid residues buried in the interior of globular proteins.  相似文献

Summary The nervous system of the most primitive fresh-water Turbellaria of the order Catenulida was investigated. Neurosecretory cells were found to occur in it. These cells have a structure similar to that of nerve cells, they only differ by the presence of neurosecretion granules and a more developed golgi complex. In the simplest Catenulida,Stenostomun, neurosecretory granules are found both in the brain cells and in the trunks in the nerve fibres where they are rather randomly distributed. Another representative of this family, the more highly organizedCatenula, exhibits specialized brain and nerve trunk regions containing neurosecretion granules. Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and grackles (Cassidix mexicanus) infected with muscle cysts of Sarcocystis were fed to opposums (Didelphis virginiana) and fecal sporocysts from the latter were given to sparrows (Passer domesticus, Family Ploceidae), canaries (Serinus canarius, Family Fringillidae) and ducks (Anas platyrhynchos, Family Anatidae). Asexual parasites were found in the endothelium of sparrows and canaries but not in ducks. When birds were kept 10 weeks or more after infection, muscle cysts were found grossly and microscopically in the majority of sparrows, and in 1 canary, but not in ducks. Muscle zoites were found in digests of all sparrows and canaries but not in that of ducks. Metrocytes and forms dividing by endodyogeny also were found in the digest. Thus, avian Sarcocystis was transmitted experimentally from 2 genera of 1 family (Icteridae) to 2 different families of passerine intermediate hosts by sporocysts from the definitive host. This is the broadest intermediate host spectrum known for a species of Sarcocystis.  相似文献

Fresh (36 days old) sporulated oocysts of Eimeria nieschulzi were divided into 7 groups. Control oocysts were maintained at 23 C in 2% aqueous (w/v) K2Cr2O7. The 6 experimental groups were mixed with either Bouin's solution, 10% aqueous (v/v) buffered formalin, Karnovsky's solution, glutaraldehyde, paraformaldehyde, or 70% aqueous (v/v) ethanol (EtOH). After 115 days, oocysts from all 7 groups were examined under oil immersion to determine the effect of fixation on their structural integrity. The parameters examined were lengths and widths of oocysts and sporocysts, percent sporulation (%S), and percent crenation (%C) of oocysts and sporocysts. The highest destruction (%S and %C) occurred in oocysts exposed to glutaraldehyde and Karnovsky's fixatives where 100% of both oocysts and sporocysts crenated and only 8% and 48%, respectively, remained sporulated. Of the oocysts in paraformaldehyde, 93% remained sporulated, but 95%of these oocysts and 100% of the sporocyst crenated. In Bouin's solution, 75% of the oocysts were intact structurally, but of these, only 60% were still sporulated with 70% of their sporocysts crenated. Oocysts preserved in 70% EtOH were 80% intact and 70% remained sporulated, but nearly 60% of their sporocysts collapsed even though the oocyst walls were intact. Oocysts preserved in 10% buffered formalin maintained structural integrity but had lower numbers of sporulated oocysts (84%) and greater numbers of crenated oocysts (18%) than control oocysts maintained in the dichromate solution (95% and 0%, respectively).  相似文献

Summary We report a collection of 53 prototypic sequences representing known families of repetitive elements from the human genome. The prototypic sequences are either consensus sequences or selected examples of repetitive sequences. The collection includes: prototypes for high and medium reiteration frequency interspersed repeats, long terminal repeats of endogenous retroviruses, alphoid repeats, telomere-associated repeats, and some miscellaneous repeats. The administration of melatonin, either peripherally (0.01-10 mg/kg) or intraocularly (0.001-10 mumol/eye), to light-exposed chicks dose-dependently increased serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity in retina but not in pineal gland. The effect of melatonin was slightly but significantly reduced by luzindole (2-benzyl-N-acetyltryptamine), and not affected by two other purported melatonin antagonists, N-acetyltryptamine and N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-5-methoxytryptamine (ML-23). The elevation of the enzyme activity induced by melatonin was substantially stronger than that evoked by 5-hydroxytryptamine, N-acetyl-5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-methoxytryptamine. The melatonin-evoked rise in the retinal NAT activity was counteracted by two dopamine D2 receptor agonists, quinpirole and apomorphine, and prevented by the dopamine D2 receptor blocker spiroperidol, and by an inhibitor of dopamine synthesis, alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine. Melatonin (0.1-10 mg/kg i.p.) dose-dependently decreased the levels of dopamine and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), as well as the DOPAC/dopamine ratio, in chick retina but not in forebrain. The results obtained (1) indicate that melatonin in vivo potently inhibits dopamine synthesis selectively in retina, and (2) suggest that the increase in retinal NAT activity evoked by melatonin in light-exposed chicks is an indirect action of the compound, and results from the disinhibition of the NAT induction process from the dopaminergic (inhibitory) signal. The results provide in vivo evidence supporting the idea (derived on the basis of in vitro findings) that a mutually antagonistic interaction between melatonin and dopamine operates in retinas of living animals.  相似文献
