Background

Until now, little was known about the variation in incidence of twin births across developing countries, because national representative data was lacking. This study provides the first comprehensive overview of national twinning rates across the developing world on the basis of reliable survey data.

Methods

Data on incidence of twinning was extracted from birth histories of women aged 15–49 interviewed in 150 Demographic and Health Surveys, held between 1987 and 2010 in 75 low and middle income countries. During the interview, information on all live births experienced by the women was recorded, including whether it was a singleton or multiple birth. Information was available for 2.47 million births experienced by 1.38 million women in a period of ten years before the interview. Twinning incidence was measured as the number of twin births per thousand births. Data for China were computed on the basis of published figures from the 1990 census. Both natural and age-standardized twinning rates are presented.

Results/Conclusions

The very low natural twinning rates of 6–9 per thousand births previously observed in some East Asian countries turn out to be the dominant pattern in the whole South and South-East Asian region. Very high twinning rates of above 18 per thousand are not restricted to Nigeria (until now seen as the world''s twinning champion) but found in most Central-African countries. Twinning rates in Latin America turn out to be as low as those in Asia. Changes over time are small and not in a specific direction.

Significance

We provide the most complete and comparable overview of twinning rates across the developing world currently possible.  相似文献

The Gollum Channels and Whittard Canyon (NE Atlantic) are two areas that receive high input of organic matter and phytodetritus from euphotic layers, but they are typified by different trophic and hydrodynamic conditions. Sediment biogeochemistry was analysed in conjunction with structure and diversity of the nematode community and differences were tested between study areas, water depths (700 m vs 1000 m), stations, and sediment layers. The Gollum Channels and Whittard Canyon harboured high meiofauna abundances (1054-1426 ind. 10 cm(-2)) and high nematode diversity (total of 181 genera). Next to enhanced meiofauna abundance and nematode biomass, there were signs of high levels of organic matter deposition leading to reduced sedimentary conditions, which in turn structured the nematode community. Striking in this respect was the presence of large numbers of 'chemosynthetic' Astomonema nematodes (Astomonema southwardorum, Order Monhysterida, Family Siphonolaimidae). This genus lacks a mouth, buccal cavity and pharynx and possesses a rudimentary gut containing internal, symbiotic prokaryotes which have been recognised as sulphur-oxidising bacteria. Dominance of Astomonema may indicate the presence of reduced environments in the study areas, which is partially confirmed by the local biogeochemical environment. The nematode communities were mostly affected by sediment layer differences and concomitant trophic conditions rather than other spatial gradients related to study area, water depth or station differences, pointing to small-scale heterogeneity as the main source of variation in nematode structure and function. Furthermore, the positive relation between nematode standing stocks, and quantity and quality of the organic matter was stronger when hydrodynamic disturbance was greater. Analogically, this study also suggests that structural diversity can be positively correlated with trophic conditions and that this relation is tighter when hydrodynamic disturbance is greater.  相似文献

The fibronectin binding integrins alpha5beta1 and alpha4beta1 generate signals pivotal for cell migration through distinct yet undefined mechanisms. For alpha5beta1, beta1-mediated activation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) promotes c-Src recruitment to FAK and the formation of a FAK-Src signaling complex. Herein, we show that FAK expression is essential for alpha5beta1-stimulated cell motility and that exogenous expression of human alpha4 in FAK-null fibroblasts forms a functional alpha4beta1 receptor that promotes robust cell motility equal to the alpha5beta1 stimulation of wild-type and FAK-reconstituted fibroblasts. alpha4beta1-stimulated FAK-null cell spreading and motility were dependent on the integrity of the alpha4 cytoplasmic domain, independent of direct paxillin binding to alpha4, and were not affected by PRNK expression, a dominant-negative inhibitor of Pyk2. alpha4 cytoplasmic domain-initiated signaling led to a approximately 4-fold activation of c-Src which did not require paxillin binding to alpha4. Notably, alpha4-stimulated cell motility was inhibited by catalytically inactive receptor protein-tyrosine phosphatase alpha overexpression and blocked by the p50Csk phosphorylation of c-Src at Tyr-529. alpha4beta1-stimulated cell motility of triple-null Src(-/-), c-Yes(-/-), and Fyn(-/-) fibroblasts was dependent on c-Src reexpression that resulted in p130Cas tyrosine phosphorylation and Rac GTPase loading. As p130Cas phosphorylation and Rac activation are common downstream targets for alpha5beta1-stimulated FAK activation, our results support the existence of a novel alpha4 cytoplasmic domain connection leading to c-Src activation which functions as a FAK-independent linkage to a common motility-promoting signaling pathway.  相似文献

We developed a mathematical model of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) that includes a hydropic recipient twin, adding interstitial and intracellular fluid compartments, fetal congestive cardiac failure, and the dynamics of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) mediators to our previous TTTS model. Ten differential equations for each twin, coupled by the net fetofetal transfusion of blood and blood components, i.e., colloids, osmoles, and RAS mediators, describe the development of fetal arterial and venous blood volumes, blood osmolality and colloid osmotic pressure (COP), interstitial fluid volume and COP, intracellular fluid volume, amniotic fluid volume and osmolality, and RAS mediator concentration. We included varying placental anastomoses, placental sharing, and amnionicity. The 20 differential equations were solved numerically from 0 to 40 wk with a 0.6-s time step. Consistent with clinical experience, model predictions are as follows. Unidirectional arteriovenous anastomoses and arteriovenous anastomoses inadequately compensated by oppositely directed anastomoses cause severe TTTS that includes a hydropic recipient. Adequately compensated arteriovenous anastomoses simulated TTTS without hydrops. The probability that oppositely directed anastomoses prevent onset of a hydropic recipient after TTTS onset, i.e., the largest interval between onset of TTTS and onset of hydrops in the recipient, was best for a venovenous anastomosis, closely followed by an arterioarterial and finally an oppositely directed arteriovenous anastomosis. Hydropic recipients have decreased amniotic fluid volume. Unequal placental sharing and amnionicity modify hydrops onset. In conclusion, our model simulates a sequence of events that results in a hydropic recipient twin in severe TTTS. The model may allow an assessment of the efficacy of current therapeutic interventions for TTTS cases that include a hydropic recipient twin.  相似文献

Ras GTPases are on/off switches regulating numerous cellular responses by signaling to various effector molecules. In T lymphocytes, Ras can be activated by two Ras exchange factors, SOS and RasGRP1, which are recruited through the adapters Grb2 and LAT and via the second-messenger diacylglycerol (DAG), respectively. Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase phosphorylation patterns induced by active Ras can vary and contribute to distinct cellular responses. The different consequences of Ras activation by either guanine exchange factor are unknown. DAG also recruits and activates the kinase protein kinase Ctheta (PKCtheta) turning on the Erk MAP kinase pathway, but the biochemical mechanism responsible is unclear. We generated T-cell clones deficient in phorbol myristate acetate (a surrogate for DAG)-induced Ras activation. Analysis of a RasGRP1-deficient Jurkat T-cell clone and RasGRP1 RNA interference in wild-type cells revealed that RasGRP1 is required for optimal, antigen receptor-triggered Ras-Erk activation. RasGRP1 relies on its DAG-binding domain to selectively activate Erk kinases. Activation of Erk correlates with the phosphorylation of threonine residue 184 in RasGRP1. This phosphorylation event requires the activities of novel PKC kinases. Conversely, active PKCtheta depends on RasGRP1 sufficiency to effectively trigger downstream events. Last, DAG-PKC-RasGRP1-driven Ras-Erk activation in T cells is a unique signaling event, not simply compensated for by SOS activity.  相似文献

In the genus Petunia, distinct pollination syndromes may have evolved in association with bee-visitation (P. integrifolia spp.) or hawk moth-visitation (P. axillaris spp). We investigated the extent of congruence between floral fragrance and olfactory perception of the hawk moth Manduca sexta. Hawk moth pollinated P. axillaris releases high levels of several compounds compared to the bee-pollinated P. integrifolia that releases benzaldehyde almost exclusively. The three dominating compounds in P. axillaris were benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol and methyl benzoate. In P. axillaris, benzenoids showed a circadian rhythm with an emission peak at night, which was absent from P. integrifolia. These characters were highly conserved among different P. axillaris subspecies and P. axillaris accessions, with some differences in fragrance composition. Electroantennogram (EAG) recordings using flower-blends of different wild Petunia species on female M. sexta antennae showed that P. axillaris odours elicited stronger responses than P. integrifolia odours. EAG responses were highest to the three dominating compounds in the P. axillaris flower odours. Further, EAG responses to odour-samples collected from P. axillaris flowers confirmed that odours collected at night evoked stronger responses from M. sexta than odours collected during the day. These results show that timing of odour emissions by P. axillaris is in tune with nocturnal hawk moth activity and that flower-volatile composition is adapted to the antennal perception of these pollinators.  相似文献

A new artificial insemination device for semen deposition near the uterotubal junction (UTJ) in cattle (Ghent device) was developed at Ghent University (Belgium). In this study, UTJ insemination of dairy cows with the Ghent device was compared with the conventional insemination technique to evaluate the effect on pregnancy rates after insemination with different doses of semen. In each of three field trials, the cows (n=795, 659, 360) and heifers (n=253, 182, 231) were randomly assigned to receive 12 million sperm deposited in the uterine body using conventional techniques (control) or a reduced sperm dose (RSD) deposited in the same manner as the control or bilateral deposition near the uterotubal junction using the Ghent device (Ghent). Sperm dosages for RSD and Ghent inseminations were 8, 4, and 2 million sperm for field trials 1-3, respectively. Repair of DNA double-strand breaks by homologous recombination requires an extensive set of proteins. Among these proteins are Rad51 and Mre11, which are known to re-localize to sites of DNA damage into nuclear foci. Ionizing radiation-induced foci can be visualized by immuno-staining. Published data show a large variation in the number of foci-positive cells and number of foci per nucleus for specific DNA repair proteins. The experiments described here demonstrate that the time after induction of DNA damage influenced not only the number of foci-positive cells, but also the size of the individual foci. The dose of ionizing radiation influenced both the number of foci-positive cells and the number of foci per nucleus. Furthermore, ionizing radiation-induced foci formation depended on the cell cycle stage of the cells and the protein of interest that was investigated. Rad51 and Mre11 foci seemed to be mutually exclusive, though a small subset of cells did show co-localization of these proteins, which suggests a possible cooperation between the proteins at a specific moment during DNA repair.  相似文献
