Summary Females of the sunflower moth, Homoeosoma electellum held in the presence of pollen, or an ethanolic pollen extract, from the sunflower Helianthus annuus initiated calling behavior at a significantly younger age following emergence than those provided sucrose only. Furthermore, females with pollen subsequently spent more time calling, and had an increased rate of egg maturation, than those held without pollen. These effects were attributed to a kairomone as females held in the presence of, but denied direct access to, pollen behaved in the same manner as those in contact with pollen. The importance of this life history strategy for the exploitation of temporarily available resources, essential to the survival of neonate larvae, and on the dispersal of adults, is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Corner's rules for plant form relate the degree of branching to branch diameter, and branch diameter to leaf or inflorescence size. We report the first interspecific test of these rules for inflorescence size and branch diameter. We derived a simple corollary of Corner's rules; since leaf size and inflorescence size are both correlated to branch thickness, they may be correlated to each other. This corollary holds for Leucadendron and Protea (Proteaceae), and in certain other taxa in the Asteraceae, Bruniaceae and Pinaceae which also have leaves and reproductive structures on the same shoot. For such taxa this implies that selection for aspects of floral display (inflorescence size, pollination type) may also be expressed at the level of leaf size and vice versa. This has implications for many aspects of botany and also points to the importance of the co-ordinating role of plant architecture for aspects of plant form.  相似文献

Complexes of point-mutated E. coli single-stranded DNA-binding protein (Eco SSB) with homopolynucleotides have been investigated by optical detection of magnetic resonance (ODMR) of the triplet state of tryptophan (Trp) residues. Investigation of the individual sublevel kinetics of the lowest triplet state of Trp residues 40 and 54 in the poly (dT) complex of Eco SSB-W88F,W135F (a mutant protein whose Trp residues at positions 88 and 135 have been substituted by Phe) shows that Trp 54 is the most affected residue upon stacking with thymine bases, confirming previous results based on SSB mutants having single Trp----Phe substitutions. (Zang, L. H., A. H. Maki, J. B. Murphy, and J. W. Chase. 1987. Biophys. J. 52:867-872). The Tx sublevel of Trp 54 shows a fourfold increase in the decay rate constant, as well as an increase in its populating rate constant by selective spin-orbit coupling. The two nonradiative sublevels show no change in lifetime, relative to unstacked Trp. For Trp 40, a weaker perturbation of Tx by thymine results in a sublevel lifetime about one-half that of normal Trp. Trp54 displays a 2[E]transition of negative polarity in the double mutant SSB complex with Poly (dT), but gives a vanishingly weak [D] - [E] signal, thus implying that the steady-state sublevel populations of Tx and Tz are nearly equal in this residue. Poly (5-BrU) induces the largest red-shift of the Eco SSB-W88F,W135F Trp phosphorescence 0,0-band of all polynucleotides investigated. Its phosphorescence decay fits well to two exponential components of 1.02 and 0.12 s, with no contribution from long-lived Trp residues. This behavior provides convincing evidence that both Trp 40 and 54 are perturbed by stacking with brominated uridine. The observed decrease in the Trp [D] values further confirms the stacking of the Trp residues with 5-BrU. Wave-length-selected ODMR experiments conducted on the [D[ + [E] transition of Eco SSB-W88F,W135F complexed with poly(5HgU) indicate the presence of multiple heavy atom-perturbed sites. Measurements made on poly (5-HgU) which each of its 4 Trp residues has been replaced in turn by Phe demonstrate that Trp 40 and 54 are the only Trp residues undergoing stacking with nucleotide bases, as previously proposed.  相似文献

The relationship between size at metamorphosis and adult size was studied in 12 closely-related species of frog from Malawi (Central Africa). These species of frogs breed in water of different durations, and occupy different habitats as adults. We could demonstrate no correlation between size at metamorphosis and size of adults when frogs were divided into groups on the basis of occupying similar habitats as adults, but when frogs were divided into groups on the basis of similar duration of larval habitat we demonstrated a strong correlation between size at metamorphosis and adult size. Thus we suggest that duration of the larval habitat is a major determinant of size at metamorphosis, with species which breed in the more temporary habitats metamorphosing at smaller size than species which breed in more permanent habitats, but which are of similar size as adults. Such manipulation of the life cycle appears to be adaptive since it results in individuals becoming independent of water earlier when the likelyhood of early loss of larval habitat is high.  相似文献

Steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency is the leading cause of impaired cortisol synthesis in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). We have studied the structure of the CYP21B gene in 30 unrelated CAH patients using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to differentiate the active CYP21B gene from its highly related CYP21A pseudogene. The PCR approach obviates the need to distinguish the CYP21A and CYP21B genes by restriction endonuclease digestion and electrophoresis before analysis with labeled probes. Furthermore, direct nucleotide sequence analysis of CYP21B genes is demonstrated on the PCR-amplified DNA. Gene deletion of CYP21B, gene conversion of the entire CYP21B gene to CYP21A, frame shift mutations in exon 3, an intron 2 mutation that causes abnormal RNA splicing, and a mutation leading to a stop codon in exon 8 appear to be the major abnormalities of the CYP21B gene in our patients. These mutations appear to account for 21-hydroxylase deficiency in 22 of 26 of our salt-wasting CAH patients.  相似文献

The iron chelators desferrioxamine (DFO), 1,2-dimethyl(L1)-, 1-ethyl-2-methyl(L1NEt)- and 1-propyl-2-methyl(L1NPr)-3-hydroxypyrid-4-ones inhibited rat aortic prostacyclin (PGI2) synthesis in vitro (rank order of potency: DFO greater than L1 greater than L1NEt greater than L1NPr) when stimulated with adrenaline, arachidonate and the Ca2+ ionophore A23187. The inhibitory action of the chelators was blocked by Fe3+ and Al3+ and reversed by washing and H2O2, but not by ascorbate. These data suggest that iron chelators inhibit prostanoid synthesis in intact tissue through the removal or binding of Fe3+ linked to cyclo-oxygenase. These iron chelators may be of therapeutic value in the treatment of inflammatory and other diseases via two mechanisms: (1) the inhibition of pro-inflammatory prostanoid synthesis and (2) the inhibition of toxic-free-radical generation by cyclo-oxygenase.  相似文献

The protein sequence predicted by the Epstein Barr virus (EBV) BERF4 open reading frame includes a tetrapeptide, Lys-Arg-Pro-Arg (KRPR), shown for other proteins to be a component of a signal for rapid nuclear localization. A subgenomic fragment of EBV DNA containing BERF4 has been incorporated into an expression vector, transfected onto primate cells and the nuclear distribution of the resulting protein established by immunofluorescence using EBV positive human sera. These sera contained high titres of antibodies to a fusion protein, produced in E. coli, consisting of beta-galactosidase and the C-terminal 167 amino acids of BERF4. Immunoaffinity purified antibodies reactive with the EBV component of the fusion show the molecular weight of this antigen in EBV immortalized B-cell lines to be about 160 kD. The demonstration that BERF4 contains an exon encoding a nuclear protein identifies a new EBNA gene (EBNA-6) and suggests that KRPR is a signal sequence common to a number of viral and cellular nuclear polypeptides which bind to nucleic acids and may therefore be of predictive value in identifying karyophilic proteins.  相似文献

A bacterium, tentatively identified as a representative of the genus Pseudomonas (strain MB86), was isolated from soil contaminated by wood-preservation chemicals by using 4-chlorobenzoate as an enrichment substrate. The pseudomonad was able to grow on 4-chlorobenzoic acid and 4-chlorobiphenyl as sole carbon and energy sources. Spent culture medium from 4-chlorobiphenyl-grown cells contained 4-chlorobenzoic acid, 4'-chloroacetophenone, 2-hydroxy,2-[4'-chlorophenyl] ethane, and 2-oxo,2-[4'-chlorophenyl] ethanol as metabolites. 4'-Chloroacetophenone was produced in large amounts, possibly as a dead-end metabolite.  相似文献

Hybrids were produced between an African male and several Pilgrim female domestic geese. Partial karyotypes revealed a difference in the fourth largest pair of autosomal chromosomes. This chromosome pair was metacentric in the African, submetacentric in the Pilgrim, and heteromorphic in the hybrids. A similar difference between the putative wild ancestors of the African and Pilgrim breeds has been reported by others. These findings provide cytological evidence to support the traditional opinion that the African breed was derived from the Asiatic swan goose (Anser cygnoides) and the Pilgrim breed was derived from the European greylag goose (Anser anser).  相似文献
