The ability of water to enter the cells of growing hypocotyl tissue was determined in etiolated soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) seedlings. Water uptake was restricted to that for cell enlargement, and the seedlings were kept intact insofar as possible. Tissue water potentials (
w) were measured at thermodynamic equilibrium with an isopiestic thermocouple psychrometer.
wwas below the water potential of the environment by as much as 3.1 bars when the tissue was enlarging rapidly. However,
w was similar to the water potential of the environment when cell enlargement was not occurring. The low
w in enlarging tissue indicates that there was a low conductivity for water entering the cells.The ability of water to enter the enlarging cells was defined as the apparent hydraulic conductivity of the tissue (Lp). Despite the low Lp of growing cells, Lp decreased further as cell enlargement decreased when intact hypocotyl tissue was deprived of endogenous auxin (indole-3-acetic acid) by removal of the hypocotyl hook. Cell enlargement resumed and Lp increased when auxin was resupplied exogenously. The auxin-induced increase in Lp was correlated with the magnitude of the growth enhancement caused by auxin, and it was observed during the earliest phase of the growth response to auxin. The increase in Lp appeared to be caused by an increase in the hydraulic conductivity of the cell protoplasm, since other factors contributing to Lp remained constant. The rapidity of the response is consistent with a cellular site of action at the plasmalemma, although other sites are not precluded.Because the experiments involved only short times, auxin-induced changes in cell enlargement could not be attributed to changes in cell osmotic potentials. Neither could they be attributed to changes in turgor, which increased when the rate of enlargement decreased. Rather, auxin appeared to act by altering the extensibility of the cell walls and by simultaneously altering the ability of water to enter the growing cells under a given water potential gradient. The hydraulic conductivity and extensibility of the cell walls appeared to contribute about equally to the control of the growth rate of the hypocotyls. 相似文献

The anaerobic pathway of chitin decomposition by chitinoclastic bacteria was examined with an emphasis on end product coupling to other salt marsh bacteria. Actively growing chitinoclastic bacterial isolates produced primarily acetate, H2, and CO2 in broth culture. No sulfate-reducing or methanogenic isolates grew on chitin as sole carbon source or produced any measurable degradation products. Mixed cultures of chitin degraders with sulfate reducers resulted in positive sulfide production. Mixed cultures of chitin-degrading isolates with methanogens resulted in the production of CH4 with reductions in headspace CO2 and H2. The combination of all three metabolic types resulted in the simultaneous production of methane and sulfide, with more methane being produced in mixed cultures containing CO2-reducing methanogens and acetoclastic sulfate reducers because of less interspecific H2 competition. 相似文献

Food action plans in many global cities articulate interest in multiple objectives including reducing in‐ and trans‐boundary environmental impacts (water, land, greenhouse gas (GHG)). However, there exist few standardized analytical tools to compare food system characteristics and actions across cities and countries to assess trade‐offs between multiple objectives (i.e., health, equity) with environmental outcomes. This paper demonstrates a streamlined model applied for analysis of four cities with varying characteristics across the United States and India, to quantify system‐wide water, energy/GHG, and land impacts associated with multiple food system actions to address health, equity, and environment. Baseline diet analysis finds key differences between countries in terms of meat consumption (Delhi 4; Pondicherry 16; United States 59, kg/capita/year), and environmental impact of processing of the average diet (21%, 19%, <1%, <1% of community‐wide GHG‐emissions for New York, Minneapolis, Delhi, and Pondicherry). Analysis of supply chains finds city average distance (food‐miles) varies (Delhi 420; Pondicherry 200; United States average 1,640 km/t‐food) and the sensitivity of GHG emissions of food demand to spatial variability of energy intensity of irrigation is greater in Indian than US cities. Analysis also finds greater pre‐consumer waste in India versus larger post‐consumer accumulations in the United States. Despite these differences in food system characteristics, food waste management and diet change consistently emerge as key strategies. Among diet scenarios, all vegetarian diets are not found equal in terms of environmental benefit, with the US Government's recommended vegetarian diet resulting in less benefit than other more focused targeted diet changes. 相似文献

Knowledge of how animal species use food resources available in the environment can increase our understanding of many ecological processes. However, obtaining this information using traditional methods is difficult for species feeding on a large variety of food items in highly diverse environments. We amplified the DNA of plants for 306 scat and 40 soil samples, and applied an environmental DNA metabarcoding approach to investigate food preferences, degree of diet specialization and diet overlap of seven herbivore rodent species of the genus Ctenomys distributed in southern and midwestern Brazil. The metabarcoding approach revealed that these species consume more than 60% of the plant families recovered in soil samples, indicating generalist feeding habits of ctenomyids. The family Poaceae was the most common food resource retrieved in scats of all species as well in soil samples. Niche overlap analysis indicated high overlap in the plant families and molecular operational taxonomic units consumed, mainly among the southern species. Interspecific differences in diet composition were influenced, among other factors, by the availability of resources in the environment. In addition, our results provide support for the hypothesis that the allopatric distributions of ctenomyids allow them to exploit the same range of resources when available, possibly because of the absence of interspecific competition. 相似文献

A series of 2-alkyl and 2-aryl substituted-3H-indol-3-one-1-oxides was prepared and evaluated for its radical trapping properties. Spin trapping and electron paramagnetic resonance experiments demonstrate the ability of these indolone-1-oxides to trap hetero- and carbon-centered radicals. The most stable spin adducts (lifetime of several hours) are obtained with 2-alkyl substituted nitrones, the 2-ethyl-5,6-dioxolo-3H-indolone-1-oxide, 5e and the 2-secbutyl-3H-indolone-1-oxide, 5f. These two nitrones are also sensitive to redox reactions in solution. Therefore this indolone-1-oxide series lacking a β-hydrogen atom gives rise to highly stable adducts with free radicals. 相似文献
