The sex ratio of the Arkansas 1 isolate of Heterodera glycines was determined in experiments in which ''Lee'' soybean was inoculated with either one or two larvae. A 3:1 male to female sex ratio was established for this isolate under the test conditions used. Human λ light chain locus: Organization and DNA sequences of three genomicJ regions 总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
Evidence for the genomic organization of human lambda light chain joining (J) region gene segments is presented. A mouse J probe was used in Southern hybridizations to localize joining region sequences in a cosmid clone containing the genomic cluster of six human lambda constant (C) region gene segments. The results of these hybridizations suggest the presence of at least one J gene segment upstream from each constant region gene segment. The DNA sequences indicate that the human JI, J2, and J3 gene segments have consensus nonamer and heptamer sequences, proposed to be involved in V-J joining, are capable of encoding the known amino acid sequences for the respective J peptides, and have a sequence which could give functional RNA splice site at the end of their coding regions. Our data show that a single functional J is located 1.3 or 1.6 kb upstream of each of the C gene segments known to encode the Mcg, Kern– Oz–, and Kern–Oz+ isotypes. In much of the discourse of evolutionary theory, reproduction is treated as an autonomous function of the individual organism — even in discussions of sexually reproducing organisms. In this paper, I examine some of the functions and consequences of such manifestly peculiar language. In particular, I suggest that it provides crucial support for the central project of evolutionary theory — namely that of locating causal efficacy in intrinsic properties of the individual organism. Furthermore, I argue that the language of individual reproduction is maintained by certain methodological conventions that both obscure many of the problems it generates and serve to actively impede attempts to redress those difficulties that can be identified. Finally, I suggest that inclusion of the complexities introduced by sexual reproduction — in both language and methodology — may radically undermine the individualist focus of evolutionary theory.I am indepted to the Rockefeller Foundation for a Humanities Fellowship that supported this research during the spring of 1986. Activity of mitochondria isolated from whole seedlings of Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. var oryzicola germinated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions for 5 to 7 days was investigated. Mitochondria from both treatments exhibited good respiratory control and ADP/O ratios. Although O2 uptake was low in anaerobic mitochondria, activity rapidly increased when the seedlings were transferred to air. Mitochondria from both aerobically and anaerobically grown seedlings of E. crus-galli var oryzicola maintained up to 66% of their initial respiration rate in the presence of both cyanide and salicylhydroxamic acid, and the inhibitory effects of cyanide and azide were additive. In addition, antimycin A was not an effective inhibitor of respiration. Reduced-minus-oxidized absorption spectra revealed that cytochromes a, a3, and b were reduced to a greater extent and cytochrome c was reduced to a lesser extent in anaerobically germinated seedlings relative to that in aerobically germinated seedlings. An absorption maximum in the cytochrome d region of the spectrum was reduced to the same extent under both germination conditions and an absorption maximum at 577 nm was present only in anaerobically germinated seedlings. Anaerobically germinated seedlings contained 70% of the cytochrome c oxidase activity found in air grown seedlings. Upon exposure to air, the developmental pattern of this enzyme in anaerobically germinated seedlings was similar to air controls. Succinate dehydrogenase activity in anaerobic seedlings was only 45% of the activity found in aerobically germinated seeds, but within 1 hour of exposure to air, the activity had increased to control levels. The results suggest that mitochondria isolated from E. crus-galli var oryzicola differ from other plants studied and that the potential for mitochondrial function during anaerobiosis exists. 相似文献

The defence reaction of operculum closing in response to the presence of the molluscivorous leech Glossiphonia complanata (L.) and the non-molluscivorous Erpobdella octoculata (L.) was studied in four species of freshwater prosobranch gastropod. Bithynia tentaculata (L.) and Valvata piscinalis (Müller) can distinguish between the leeches, reacting only to G. complanata. V. piscinalis is capable of a greater degree of distance chemoreception of the leech ‘scent’. Valvata cristata Müller and Potamopyrgus jenkinsi (Smith) did not react to either leech. V. cristata may not be a potential prey item for G. complanata, while P. jenkinsi is fed on by the leech, but is a relative newcomer to the freshwater fauna.
