We observed the number of predatory mites (Phytoseiidae:Typhlodromus caudiglans) on the foliage of 20 North American species of grapes (Vitis spp) plus the domesticated EuropeanVitis vinifera, all grown in a common garden. We found relatively few phytophagous mites. The numbers of phytophagous mites were not correlated with the plant characteristics that we measured. We found approximately five times as many predatory mites as phytophagous mites and the numbers of these phytoseiid predators were not affected by the availability of prey. Similarly, numbers of phytoseiids were unaffected by plant gender and, hence, the availability of pollen, another source of food. The numbers of phytoseiids were not clustered according to the taxonomic grouping of the tested plant species. Leaf surface characteristics explained over 25% of the variance in the numbers of phytoseiids. Numbers of phytoseiids were positively associated with the density of vein hairs, the density of bristles in leaf axils, and the presence of leaf domatia. These results suggest that sheltered habitats rather than food availability may limit the numbers of phytoseiid mites on grapevines. 相似文献

Cross-species chromosome painting was used to investigate genome rearrangements between tammar wallaby Macropus eugenii (2n = 16) and the swamp wallaby Wallabia bicolor (2n = 10♀/11♂), which diverged about 6 million years ago. The swamp wallaby has an XX female:XY1Y2 male sex chromosome system thought to have resulted from a fusion between an autosome and the small original X, not involving
the Y. Thus, the small Y1 should represent the original Y and the large Y2 the original autosome. DNA paints were prepared from flow-sorted and microdissected chromosomes from the tammar wallaby.
Painting swamp wallaby spreads with each tammar chromosome-specific probe gave extremely strong and clear signals in single-,
two-, and three-color FISH. These showed that two tammar wallaby autosomes are represented unchanged in the swamp wallaby,
two are represented by different centric fusions, and one by a tandem fusion to make the very long arms of swamp wallaby Chromosome
(Chr) 1. The large swamp wallaby X comprises the tammar X as its short arm, and a tandemly fused 7 and 2 as the long arm.
The acrocentric swamp wallaby Y2 is a 2/7 fusion, homologous with the long arm of the X. The small swamp wallaby Y1 is confirmed as the original Y by its painting with the tammar Y. However, the presence of sequences shared between the microdissected
tammar Xp and Y on the swamp wallaby Y2 implies that the formation of the compound sex chromosomes involved addition of autosome(s) to both the original X and Y.
We propose that this involved fusion with an ancient pseudoautosomal region followed by fission proximal to this shared region.

Summary A maternal de novo reciprocal translocation between the short arms of chromosomes 9 and 13 is reported. Conscious ovariectomized (OVX) rats bearing a cannula implanted in the 3rd ventricle were injected with 2 μl of 0.9% NaCl containing varying doses of synthetic gastrin and plasma gonadotropin, GH and TSH levels were measured by RIA in jugular blood samples drawn through an indwelling silastic catheter. Control injections of saline iv or into the 3rd ventricle did not modify plasma hormone levels. Intraventricular injection of 1 or 5 μg gastrin produced significant suppression of plasma LH and prolactin (Prl) levels within 5 min of injection. Injection of 1 μg gastrin had no effect on plasma GH, but increasing the dose to 5 μg induced a progressive elevation, which reached peak levels at 60 min. By contrast, TSH levels were lowered by both doses of gastrin within 5 min of injection and the lowering persisted for 60 min. Intravenous injection of gastrin had no effect on plasma gonadotropin, GH and TSH, but induced an elevation in Prl levels. incubation of hemipituitaries with gastrin failed to modify gonadotropin, GH or Prl but slightly inhibited TSH release at the highest dose of 5 μg gastrin. The results indicate that synthetic gastrin can alter pituitary hormone release in unrestrained OVX rats and implicate a hypothalamic site of action for the peptide to alter release of a gonadotropin, Prl and GH. Its effect on TSH release may be mediated both via hypothalamic neurons and by a direct action on pituitary thyrotrophs. 相似文献

A centrifugation binding assay has been used to demonstrate the binding of [3H] (±) abscisic acid to membrane-rich fractions prepared from leaves of Vicia faba L. Kinetic analysis of this binding shows evidence of saturation of binding sites with increasing concentration of ligand. Scatchard analysis of these data yields a biphasic plot possibly indicating the presence of two types of binding sites. Cultures of amoebae of the mutant strain ATS23 isolated from strain CLd of Physarum polycephalum contain multinucleate cells and cells with increased nuclear DNA content. Plasmodia derived from ATS23 clones show abnormal morphology and defective sporulation. All abnormalities are enhanced by high incubation temperature (31 °C). Genetic analysis suggested that all the abnormalities were caused by a single mutation, denoted hts-23. The kinetics of plasmodium formation were followed in cultures of apogamic amoebae carrying hts-23 and hts+ (wild type) respectively. Results indicated that, relative to wild type, hts-23 did not increase the rate of plasmodium formation. There was evidence that, in both mutant and wild-type strains, commitment to plasmodium development occurred in uninucleate cells. Analysis of cell pedigrees by time-lapse cinematography indicated that the primary abnormal event in cultures of hts-23 amoebae was failure of cytokinesis; an apparently complete cleavage furrow was formed but cell separation failed, resulting in a binucleate cell. This event occurred randomly in pedigrees in which the majority of divisions were completed normally; its frequency increased during incubation at 31 °C. All other abnormalities in hts-23 amoebal cultures could be attributed to this primary event, assuming that DNA synthesis continued in the absence of cytokinesis and that the binucleate cells underwent the amoebal type of “open” mitosis, allowing the possibility of spindle fusion. This implies that the acquisition of “closed” mitosis is an essential early step in plasmodium development. 相似文献
