Gaps formed by stream laid gravels in a warm temperate Podocarp-Angiosperm rain forest in New Zealand were quickly invaded by 41 free-standing woody species. Height-age curves for the eight most frequent species were used to construct a 12 yr chronosequence which showed 18 species arrived by 0.9 yr and 33 by 1.9 yr. This rapid invasion was supplied from both gaps and mature forest and fitted the Initial Floristic Model coupled with a Facilitation Mechanism. Over the 12 yr period, stem density and births peaked at 0.9 yr and deaths at 1.9 yr with a natality of 39.5/m2, a mortality of 38.5/m2 and nearly 99% dying as seedlings. Plant height increased to 5.1 m at 12.1 yr with height increment peaking at 43 cm/yr at 7.3 yr. Maximum potential heights ranged from 4 to 60 m and were positively correlated with longevity which varied from 20 to 1150 yr for 19 known species. A decline in height increment to 0.9 yr showed a below-ground component in intraspecific competition with significant negative correlations between stem density and height indicating a later above-ground component. There was no significant height competition amongst the 11 most frequent species and only one significant negative interspecific association. This suggests high species coexistence for which Equal chance was probably the major mechanism. Given this coexistence, rapid species arrival, early sexual maturity and similar density and height-age patterns, the main dynamic variables may be maximum height, longevity and height increment, all of which are, partly, genetically programmed. Most dynamic affinities are with tropical forest, although height growth and species richness are warm temperate.  相似文献

Aim

Understanding cetacean species' distributions and population structure over space and time is necessary for effective conservation and management. Geographic differences in acoustic signals may provide a line of evidence for population-level discrimination in some cetacean species. We use acoustic recordings collected over broad spatial and temporal scales to investigate whether global variability in echolocation click peak frequency could elucidate population structure in Blainville's beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris), a cryptic species well-studied acoustically.

Methods

Passive acoustic data were collected at 76 sites and 150 cumulative years of data were analysed to extract beaked whale echolocation clicks. Using an automated detector and subsequent weighted network clustering on spectral content and interclick interval of clicks, we determined the properties of a primary cluster of clicks with similar characteristics per site. These were compared within regions and across ocean basins and evaluated for suitability as population-level indicators.

Results

Spectral averages obtained from primary clusters of echolocation clicks identified at each site were similar in overall shape but varied in peak frequency by up to 8 kHz. We identified a latitudinal cline, with higher peak frequencies occurring in lower latitudes.

Main conclusions

It may be possible to acoustically delineate populations of Blainville's beaked whales. The documented negative correlation between signal peak frequency and latitude could relate to body size. Body size has been shown to influence signal frequency, with lower frequencies produced by larger animals, which are subsequently more common in higher latitudes for some species, although data are lacking to adequately investigate this for beaked whales. Prey size and depth may shape frequency content of echolocation signals, and larger prey items may occur in higher latitudes, resulting in lower signal frequencies of their predators.  相似文献

The Duwamish River Floating Wetlands project designed, built, and deployed constructed floating wetlands in the estuary of the urban Duwamish River in Seattle, Washington, during the 2019 and 2020 outmigration seasons for juvenile salmon. Using a “safe-to-fail” methodology and adaptive management strategies, these innovative floating wetland prototypes were custom designed to provide the native plants, invertebrates and slow water habitat that juvenile salmon require during their transition from fresh to salt water, and were monitored for these outcomes. This paper will provide insight into the prototype designs, adaptive management strategies and plant performance, and unique public-private-academic-community partnerships that supported 2 years of design and research.  相似文献

Research into repair within the circular economy (CE) typically focuses on technical aspects of design, policy, and markets, and often assumes simplified conditions for the user/owner and the product system to explain the barriers to scaling repair activities. However, factors occurring at pre-use stages of the product's life cycle can significantly influence whether, and to what extent, repair is viable or possible, that is, warranty duration, after-sale service provision, and access to necessities. The passing of time can directly and indirectly affect the ability, difficulty, and thus, the likelihood of repair activities being performed at each stage of the product's life cycle. Drawing from the literature and applying inductive systems-thinking tools, we propose a framework for considering the “System of Repairability.” We delineate how the passing of time (temporal dimensions) affects one's ‘‘ability to repair,’’ as a product progresses through different life cycle phases (i.e., breakdown vs. repair vs. disposal), and the point(s) at which the repair is considered or attempted (i.e., year of usage). By integrating life cycle and temporal (time-based) dimensions into a broad System of Repairability framework, we clarify relevant interconnections, iterations, sequences, and timing of decision points, stakeholders, and necessary conditions to facilitate an outcome of successful repair at the individual level, and thus intervention strategies for scaling repair within CE. We discuss how a policy mix can address the life cycle of products and the repair system more holistically. We conclude with a future outlook on how temporal dimensions can inform policy strategies and future research.  相似文献

We conducted visual fish surveys in coexisting mangrove-coral (CMC) habitats in Panama to analyze the effect of coral presence in mangrove habitats on the fish assemblage. Our study revealed that CMC habitats harbor distinct fish assemblages compared to mangrove habitats without coral, with greater species richness and increased herbivore abundance. Shigella flexneriand related enteropathogenic bacteria are important agents of bacillary dysentery, a potentially life-threatening illness for children in underdeveloped regions of the world. Onset of shigellosis stems fromS. flexneriinvasion of colonic epithelial cells, leading to localized cell death and inflammation. Invasion plasmid antigens (Ipa) B, C, and D are three secreted proteins encoded by the large virulence plasmid ofS. flexnerithat have been implicated as essential effectors of this cell invasion process. These proteins are expressed as part of theipaoperon and are among the major targets of the host immune response to shigellosis. Biochemical characterization of the Ipa invasins has been complicated by the fact they have not been purified in the quantities needed for detailedin vitroanalysis. Here we describe the first cloning, expression, and extensive purification of IpaB and IpaC fusion proteins fromEscherichia colifor use in dissecting of the protein biochemistry ofS. flexneripathogenesis. A variety of approaches were used to prepare significant quantities of these proteins in their soluble forms, including the use of different host cell lines, modification of bacterial growth conditions, and the use of alternative plasmid expression vectors. Now that these Ipa proteins are available in a highly pure form, it will be possible to initiate studies on their important biological and immunological properties as well as their recruitment into high-molecular-weight protein complexes. Together with IpaD (purified as part of a previous study), these purified proteins will be useful for: (a) exploring properties of the host immune response toS. flexneriinvasion, (b) elucidating the specific biochemical properties that lead to pathogen internalization, (c) analyzing the importance of specific Ipa protein complexes in host cell invasion, and (d) monitoring, or perhaps even augmenting, the efficacy of live oral vaccines in human trials.  相似文献

We observed the number of predatory mites (Phytoseiidae:Typhlodromus caudiglans) on the foliage of 20 North American species of grapes (Vitis spp) plus the domesticated EuropeanVitis vinifera, all grown in a common garden. We found relatively few phytophagous mites. The numbers of phytophagous mites were not correlated with the plant characteristics that we measured. We found approximately five times as many predatory mites as phytophagous mites and the numbers of these phytoseiid predators were not affected by the availability of prey. Similarly, numbers of phytoseiids were unaffected by plant gender and, hence, the availability of pollen, another source of food. The numbers of phytoseiids were not clustered according to the taxonomic grouping of the tested plant species. Leaf surface characteristics explained over 25% of the variance in the numbers of phytoseiids. Numbers of phytoseiids were positively associated with the density of vein hairs, the density of bristles in leaf axils, and the presence of leaf domatia. These results suggest that sheltered habitats rather than food availability may limit the numbers of phytoseiid mites on grapevines.  相似文献
