Bulkiness, longevity and solidity of the body in woody plants enable the successive development of accessory shoots and adventitious roots in (1) both proximal and distal positions on organs, (2) both the above-ground and below-ground space, (3) both the aerial and soil environments. In monocotyledons, woody rhizomes play an essential role in the basic growth habit and architectural models. In dicotyledonous and a few gymnospermous trees, attached and successively disconnected ramets play a multilateral role in the pertinent life strategies. The majority of sprouts, coppice shoots and root suckers behave as opportunistic organs (a) serving as means of vegetative reproduction, (b) securing colonization of unoccupied ground, (c) increasing competitive power of the species within the community, (d) increasing survival rate of the stressed/disturbed genet in marginal habitats, (e) forming replacement for ageing or damaged organs, and (f) enabling reiteration of the genet's entire architectural model. 相似文献

The benthic infauna and benthic respiration off the Banc d'Arguin (Mauritania,Northwest Africa) 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
In May 1988, a study was made of the benthic community structure and benthic respiratory activity along two transects across the Mauritanian shelf off Banc d'Arguin. The main emphasis of the present paper is put on the macrobenthos, but results of a gross analysis of the meibenthos are discussed as well. Macrofaunal and meiofaunal density showed no consistent decrease with distance from the shore. The composition of the macrofauna taxa appeared to be closely correlated with sediment parameters and less so with depth. The highest macrofaunal biomass was found at the northern edge of the Banc d'Arguin, and the lowest biomass along the outer shelf. The biomass levels on the shelf match the ones reported for the northern Cap Blanc area where, in contrast to the seasonal upwelling in the investigated area, upwelling takes place all year round.Benthic respiration rates on the offshore shelf were relatively high at the nearshore stations and low near the shelf break. Experimental evidence suggests that the low O2 levels in the upwelling water covering part of shelf, inhibited benthic respiration. The high respiratory activity at some northern inshore stations coincided with the presence of oxygen-rich coastal water. In this area benthic respiration surpassed the level previously reported for the enriched Cap Blanc area. On the basis of our respiration data, an estimate is made of the total carbon demand of the benthic community on the shelf in May and this quantity is compared with the measurements of daily primary production. 相似文献

Microsites are created by abiotic and biotic features of the landscape and may provide essential habitats for the persistence of biota. Forest canopies and understorey plants may moderate wind and solar radiation to create microclimatic conditions that differ considerably from regional climates. Skirt-forming plants, where senescent leaves create hut-like cavities around the stem, create microsites that are sheltered from ambient conditions and extreme weather events, constituting potential refuges for wildlife. We investigate day and night temperatures and humidity for four locations (grass tree cavities, soil, 20 cm above-ground, 1 m above-ground) in a South Australian forest with relatively open canopy of stringybark eucalypts (Eucalyptus baxteri, E. obliqua) and an understorey of skirt-forming grass trees (Xanthorrhoea semiplana) at 5, 10, 20, and 40 m from the forest edge. We also measured the percentage of canopy and understorey covers. Generally, temperature and humidity differed significantly between more sheltered (grass tree cavities, soil) and open-air microsites, with the former being cooler during the day and warmer and more humid during the night. Furthermore, our results suggest that canopy cover tends to decrease, and understorey cover tends to increase, the temperature of microsites. Distance to the edge was not significantly related to temperature for any microsite, suggesting that the edge effect did not extend beyond 10 m from the edge. Overall, grass trees influenced microclimatic conditions by forming a dense understorey and providing cavities that are relatively insulated. The capacity of grass tree cavities to buffer external conditions increased linearly with ambient temperatures, by 0.46°C per degree increase in maximum and 0.25°C per degree decrease in minimum temperatures, potentially offsetting climate warming and enabling persistence of fauna within their thermal limits. Abstract. A method is described for producing outgrowths of small nephron segments (average 24 cells) in culture. The method was used to estimate an overall colony-forming efficiency of 4.6% for cells constituting the segments. Efficiency was found to be lower for thick segments (1%) than for thin segments (6%) from Henle's loop. The latter higher level indicates that precursor cells are concentrated near the middle of the nephron. For comparison, a two-dose irradiation technique was used to calculate a mean number of 5 ± 2 (SE) clonogens per segment producing outgrowths. This tended to be higher than the value of about 1 calculated from the 65% of segments producing outgrowths, as expected if the remaining segments contained no clonogens. 相似文献

Droughts are linked to tree die-offs in the biodiverse humid tropics. We assessed drought response of a Dipterocarp Forest and found a marginal decrease in tree survival, indicating drought resistance. Understory and emergent species were sensitive to drought. Treatment of cultured bovine carotid artery endothelial cells with 0.1 µM human plasmin has been reported to induce a receptor-mediated short burst of arachidonate release, which is a pertussis toxin-sensitive and extracellular calcium-dependent reaction. Plasmin-induced calcium influx in cells was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with pertussis toxin, indicating that the former was coupled with a pertussis toxin-sensitive guanosine 5-triphosphate (GTP)-binding protein. Plasmin significantly induced the formation of lysophosphatidylcholine but not lysophosphatidylethanolamine. A cellular phospholipase A2 with an arachidonyl specificity at the sn-2 position of phosphatidylcholine, which required submicromolar calcium, was identified as a cytosolic phospholipase A2 by immunoblot analysis. By a cell-free enzyme activity assay and immunoblot analysis, plasmin was found to induce a translocation of the cytosolic phospholipase A2 from the cytosol to the membrane. Taken together, the results suggest that plasmin bound to its putative receptor and activated a GTP-binding protein coupled to calcium influx channel, followed by translocation and activation of cytosolic phospholipase A2 in endothelial cells. 相似文献

Paralysis caused by feeding female Ixodes rubicundus ticks is a major problem in large areas of South Africa. As the life cycle of the tick extends over a period of 2 years, it was hypothesized that strategic treatment of sheep with an acaricide over a 2 year period, timed to kill most engorging females, should markedly lower the biotic potential of the tick. Two flocks of sheep grazing in separate paddocks known to be infested with I. rubicundus were treated either strategically or on a threshold basis (i.e. only when tick challenge exceeded a predetermined critical level in terms of paralysis) for a 2 year period. The tick burdens of untreated control sheep running with the two flocks were monitored over a 4 year period and their seasonal dynamics determined. The times at which peak infestations occurred were similar for both flocks of sheep, but significant differences in mean tick burdens between the two flocks were recorded. Tick numbers on sheep in the strategically treated flock did not decrease during the third and fourth years of the trial as was expected. Possible reasons for this were low stocking densities, especially during times of peak abundance of adults and the presence of wild hosts which maintained tick populations. 相似文献
