Whiplash injury usually occurs in traffic accidents. Persons experienced this injury might have an impairment of proprioception clinically expressed as inability to determine the exact position of their heads. The aim of this study was to examine the loss of proprioception in people who had a whiplash injury. The study included 60 subjects with cervical spine injury, aged 20 to 50 years and 60 healthy volunteers matched by sex and age. The instrument used for cervical spine mobility assessment was the Cervical Measurement System (CMS), which determines the ability of subjects to return their head in the exact position as it was before they turned it 30 degrees left or right. Patients with cervical spine injury showed significant impairment of proprioception in comparison with healthy subjects (P < 0.001). The results support the hypothesis that subject with recent cervical spine injury have incorrect perception of their head position. Therefore, their rehabilitation should include the correction of proprioception and head coordination. 相似文献
Brassica oleracea var. acephala is an important leafy vegetable that has been widely consumed as a high-nutrient, low-calorie food. Because of the plant’s biennial and self-incompatibility nature, biotechnological approaches are alternative way for propagation and breeding improvements. Since tissue culture studies have been focused in other B. oleracea representatives, the aim of the present study was to achieve effective regeneration protocol distinctive for collard greens, and evaluate the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of regenerants. The effect of 3 cytokinins [thidiazuron (TDZ), 6-benzyladenine (BA) and 6-furfuryladenine (kinetin, KIN)] at increasing concentrations (0, 5, 7.5, 10, 20 or 30 µM) in combination with tenfold lower concentration of 1-naphtaleneacetic acid (NAA) (0, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 2 or 3 µM, respectively) on the regeneration from hypocotyl slices was studied. Histological analysis revealed the two regeneration pathways, somatic embryogenesis and shoot organogenesis, simultaneously occurred in the same explant, regardless of the cytokinin/NAA combinations used. The regeneration frequency of 95.9%, with 7.5 morphogenic structures regenerated per explant, and the healthy appearance of regenerated plants indicated the optimal combination 20 µM TDZ?+?2 µM NAA. TDZ at 5 µM provided the high somatic embryo proliferation rate by generation of secondary embryos (7.79) along with the lowest rate of their abnormalities. Embryo-developed plants were successfully acclimatised (above 90%). The plants regenerated and proliferated on TDZ-containing media had higher total phenolic content that correlated with the highest free radical scavenging activity (IC50?=?19.09 µg ml??1).
A reference Y-chromosome short tandem repeat (STR) haplotype database is needed for Y-STR match interpretation as well as for national and regional characterization of populations. The aim of this study was to create a comprehensive Y-STR haplotype database of the Croatian contemporary population and to analyze substructure between the five Croatian regions. We carried out a statistical analysis of the data from previously performed genetic analyses collected during routine forensic work by the Forensic Science Centre "Ivan Vu?eti?". A total of 1,100 unrelated men from eastern, western, northern, southern and central Croatia were selected for the purpose of this study. Y-STRs were typed using the AmpFISTR Yfiler PCR amplification kit. Analysis of molecular variance calculated with the Y chromosome haplotype reference database online analysis tool included 16 population samples with 20,247 haplotypes. A total of 947 haplotypes were recorded, 848 of which were unique (89.5%). Haplotype diversity was 0.998, with the most frequent haplotype found in 9 of 1,100 men (0.82%). Locus diversity varied from 0.266 for DYS392 to 0.868 for DYS385. Discrimination capacity was 86.1%. Our results suggested high level of similarity among regional subpopulations within Croatia, except for mildly different southern Croatia. Relative resemblance was found with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Whit Atheys' Haplogroup Predictor was used to estimate the frequencies of Y-chromosome haplogroups. I2a, R1a, E1b1b and R1b haplogroups were most frequent in all Croatian regions. These results are important in forensics and contribute to the population genetics and genetic background of the contemporary Croatian population. 相似文献
The current study aimed to determine gender differences in nutritional habits, eating behaviour, weight status, body image and weight control practices during early and late adolescence. 677 Viennese pupils (253 boys and 424 girls) between the ages 10 and 18 years (x = 14.1 yrs; +/- 2.2) were enrolled in the study. Weight status was determined by means of body mass index percentiles. To assess eating behavior, food preferences, body image and weight control practices, a 48 item questionnaire was developed. Significant gender differences in weight status were observable during late adolescence only. Girls are significantly less satisfied with their body weight. Furthermore, girls practice dieting and weight control to avoid any weight gain more frequently than boys. Gender differences in eating behavior intensified from early to late adolescence. From early to late adolescence, meal size decreased among girls, while it remains stabile or increased among boys. Boys eat generally more than girls. Furthermore, boys preferred meat and fast food while girls consumed fruits, vegetables and healthy food significantly more frequently. These gender differences are explained by gender specific energetic demands and culture typical beauty ideals. 相似文献
Changes in CO(2) photo-assimilation and PSII photochemical efficiency in Ramonda serbica leaves during a dehydration-rehydration cycle were examined. The rate of CO(2) photo-assimilation was greatly reduced during dehydration, but recovery was complete with rehydration when the relative water content of leaves reached values similar to those of well-hydrated, control leaves. The results showed that the response of R. serbica leaves to severe water stress involves two different mechanisms. In the first, CO(2) assimilation is limited by stomata closure that creates an excess proton concentration in the lumen and activates non-photochemical quenching. This plays an important role in the mechanism of photoprotection by dissipation of excitation energy. When dehydration became severe and leaf RWC reached very low values, the electron transport rate (ETR) decreased markedly, while the capacity for regulatory mechanisms such as q(NP) (non-photochemical quenching) was greatly reduced. For severely dehydrated leaves of R. serbica, it appears that reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation is better prevented by mechanisms that quench chlorophyll triplet formation via lutein. 相似文献
Anatomical injury of the leaves of the invasive species, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., caused by the eriophyid mite Aceria anthocoptes (Nal.), which is the only eriophyid mite that has been recorded on C. arvense worldwide, is described. The injury induced by the mite feeding on the leaves of C. arvense results in visible russeting and bronzing of the leaves. Other conspicuous deformations are folding and distortion of the
leaf blade and curling of leaf edge, as well as gradual drying of leaves. The anatomical injury of the mature leaves of field-collected
plants was limited to the epidermis of the lower leaf surface. However, on young leaves of experimentally infested plants,
rust mite injuries extend to epidermal cells on both leaf surfaces and to those of deeper mesophyll layers. On these leaves,
lesions on the lower leaf surface even affected the phloem of the vascular bundles. Leaf damage induced by A. anthocoptes is discussed with regard to the mite’s potential as a biological control agent of C. arvense. 相似文献
The metabolic syndrome, an assemblage of risk factors, viz., obesity, dyslipidemia, carbohydrate intolerance, and hypertension, associated with development of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes, has become a major public health problem in the developed countries. However, data on its prevalence in worldwide populations, particularly in non-industrialized societies is sparse. We report the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in an island population of the eastern Adriatic coast of Croatia, a distinctly homogenous population living in relative isolation with a traditional way of life style pattern. The participants consist of 381 unrelated individuals (136 males, 245 females) from the island of Hvar, age 19 and above. Hvar is among the most populated Croatian islands with a total population of 11,459 individuals according to the 1991 census. Metabolic syndrome was assessed following the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) criteria, with the exception of using body mass index and waist hip ratio as the predictors of obesity. Overall age-adjusted prevalence of metabolic syndrome is 26% (32% in males and 24% in females) with body mass index, and 42% (57% in males and 36% in females) with waist hip ratio as the measures of obesity. Pairwise correlations of the age and sex-adjusted individual components show that with the exception of fasting plasma glucose, the other components of metabolic syndrome are significantly associated with each other, suggesting their co-morbidity. In spite of adherence to a relatively traditional life-style pattern together with a "Mediterranean diet" and rural habitat, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is substantially high in the population of Hvar. It is likely that factors other than nutritional practices, that might include genetic susceptibility, could potentially be important in predisposition to metabolic syndrome. 相似文献
Aims Plants in their natural habitats frequently cope with a multitude of abiotic stresses, such as high light intensity, extreme temperatures and water deficit, which often co-occur during periods of drought, especially in semi-arid and arid regions. Exposure of plants to stressful environmental conditions usually induce overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that, as highly toxic derivatives of O 2, can assault all cell macromolecules, leading to the disruption of cellular homeostasis and, consequently, the uncoupling of major metabolic processes, the photosynthesis and photorespiration. In order to minimize ROS-mediated cellular damage, plants have evolved highly efficient antioxidative defense systems that include both enzymatic and non-enzymatic components. Since abiotic stress can also operate as a strong evolutionary force that shapes adaptations in natural plant populations, the aim of this study was to examine the seasonal variation patterns of two distinct antioxidative systems, ROS-scavenging enzymes and anthocyanin pigments, in the leaf tissue of a steppe plant, Iris pumila, as expressed under contrasting light conditions that the species regularly experiences in the wild. Methods We selected two natural populations of I.pumila inhabiting the alternative radiation environments in the Deliblato Sands, a sun-exposed dune site and a woodland understory. The specific activity of three antioxidative enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) and the content of total anthocyanins were examined in leaves of I.pumila plants collected from each of the 31 Iris clones (17 in the exposed population and 14 in the shaded population) once during each of the three seasons, spring, summer and autumn in 2004. Specifically, a fully expanded leaf was cut from each clonal plant between 15:00 and 16:00 h, immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at ?70°C until preparation.Important findings Generally, all three antioxidative enzymes were up-regulated in summer-harvested leaves compared to their spring or autumn counterparts, as was observed for the concentration of foliar anthocyanins, indicating that strengthening of antioxidant systems was the key mechanism for long-term acclimatization of I.pumila plants to stressful environmental conditions within their natural ecological niches. When plants from contrasting radiation environments were compared, SOD and CAT activities appeared to be greater in shade-exposed than in sun-exposed leaves. Conversely, POD activity and the content of foliar anthocyanins were notably higher in foliage experiencing full sunlight relative to those developed under vegetation canopy, suggesting the synergistic function of these two molecules in protecting leaf cells against photoinhibitory and photooxidative effects of strong light. 相似文献
