In recent years the selenium (Se) intake of the human population of the UK has shown a marked decline from 60 μg/d in 1978
to around 30 μg/d in 1990 owing largely to a significant reduction in the importation of North American wheat for bread-making
fluor. Other countries (Finland, for example) in similar situations have instituted fertilization programs in order to raise
cereal Se concentrations and thus boost dietary intakes. An alternative approach would be to increase the Se concentration
of carcass meat by supplementation of meat animals for a limited period prior to slaughter. A trial was set up with store
lambs to evaluate this approach. Sixteen Scottish Blackface lambs were stratified according to live weight and then randomly
allocated to one of four treatments: unsupplemented, or 3.5, 7, or 10.5 mg. Se/head/wk. After 14 wk, the lambs were sacrificed
and samples of shoulder and thigh muscle, liver, and kidney were obtained for analysis. All three treatments effected an increase
in whole blood glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and plasma Se concentrations over controls. Shoulder, thigh, and liver Se exhibited
a dose-response relationship to treatment, but kidney Se concentrations were unaffected by treatment. Muscle and some organ
meat Se concentrations can therefore be increased by supplementation and could contribute to increased human dietary intakes

The integrity of the human epidermis is guaranteed by a regulated balance of proliferation, differentiation, and physiologic cell death of its main cellular constituent, the epidermal keratinocyte. Physiologic cell death is known as apoptosis and has been recognized as an active regulatory mechanism, complementary to, but functionally opposite of, proliferation. The regulators of the delicate balance between cell death and proliferation are only partially understood in human keratinocytes. Transforming growth factor-α (TGF-α) has been identified as a positive regulator of proliferation and growth, while tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) induces apoptosis. Both mediators are thought to influence epidermal keratinocytes under various physiological and pathophysiological conditions. In the current study we have begun to investigate potential regulatory interactions between these two mediators in the human keratinocyte cell line HaCaT. We have found that, when the HaCaT cells were sensitized by the translation inhibitor cycloheximide, TNF-α induced apoptosis, as evidenced by nuclear disintegration, DNA fragmentation (“DNA laddering”), and the appearance of soluble DNA/histone complexes. Moreover, we found that the induction of apoptosis was reduced by preincubation of the cells with TGF-α. The protective effect of TGF-α was abrogated by translation inhibition, indicating that it depended onde novoprotein synthesis. Moreover, the protective effect was not accompanied by a reduced surface expression of TNF receptor molecules. We postulate that TNF-α-induced apoptosis in HaCaT cells is counteracted by constitutively produced suppressors of apoptosis, the synthesis of which can be downregulated by inhibition of translation and upregulated by the cytokine TGF-α. 相似文献

Senecio pauciflorus and S. indecorus (= Packera pauciflora and P. indecora ) are autogamous, high polyploid species with similar geographic ranges in North America. Their east-west distribution pattern including a disjunction in California is unusual within the aureoid Senecio complex and may provide insights into the origins of the aureoid complex. Taxonomic treatment of the two taxa has varied in the past due to the similarity and variability of the taxa. Results of morphological analyses of 192 herbarium specimens show that the taxa are best treated as two distinct species and that infraspecifìc variation is not related to geographical distribution. Separation of taxa remains difficult. California specimens are the most difficult to classify and may represent the ancestral group. Based on morphology and chromosome number it is suggested that the 5. pauciflorus-S. indecorus group may have originated from the arctic-alpine aureoid group including S. cymbalaria . 相似文献

Many diurnal anthropoid species direct social behaviors toward their own mirror-image as though viewing a conspecific. To determine whether a nocturnal prosimian species would behave similarly, we videotaped social responses of 45 Garnett's greater bush babies (Otolemur garnettii) observing mirror-images for the first time, scored them for frequency and duration, and compared them with the same behaviors directed elsewhere in the test apparatus. Males scentmarked more than females did, principally with the hindfoot, and most when in immediate proximity to the mirror. Bush babies displayed bipedal posture and threat gestures when oriented directly toward a mirror from a near position. Orientation toward the mirror also increased the frequency of arched-back postures; however, this behavior was not contingent on proximity to the mirror or visibility of the mirror-image. The differential expression of specific behaviors toward mirror-images by male and female bush babies supports the view that this nocturnal prosimian, thought to be dependent on olfaction and audition for communication, is capable of specific recognition by visual cues alone. 相似文献
