Studies estimating species' distributions require information about animal locations in space and time. Location data can be collected using surveys within a predetermined frame of reference (i.e., Eulerian sampling) or from animal‐borne tracking devices (i.e., Lagrangian sampling). Integration of observations obtained from Eulerian and Lagrangian perspectives can provide insights into animal movement and habitat use. However, contemporaneous data from both perspectives are rarely available, making examination of biases associated with each sampling approach difficult. We compared distributions of a mobile seabird observed concurrently from ship, aerial, and satellite tag surveys during May, June, and July 2012 in the northern California Current. We calculated utilization distributions to quantify and compare variability in common murre (Uria aalge) space use and examine how sampling perspective and platform influence observed patterns. Spatial distributions of murres were similar in May, regardless of sampling perspective. Greatest densities occurred in coastal waters off southern Washington and northern Oregon, near large murre colonies and the mouth of the Columbia River. Density distributions of murres estimated from ship and aerial surveys in June and July were similar to those observed in May, whereas distributions of satellite‐tagged murres in June and July indicated northward movement into British Columbia, Canada, resulting in different patterns observed from Eulerian and Lagrangian perspectives. These results suggest that the population of murres observed in the northern California Current during spring and summer includes relatively stationary individuals attending breeding colonies and nonstationary, vagile adults and subadults. Given the expected growth of telemetry studies and advances in survey technology (e.g., unmanned aerial systems), these results highlight the importance of considering methodological approaches, spatial extent, and synopticity of distribution data sets prior to integrating data from different sampling perspectives. 相似文献

The redox-regulated chaperone Hsp33 is specifically activated upon exposure of cells to peroxide stress at elevated temperatures. Here we show that Hsp33 harbors two interdependent stress-sensing regions located in the C-terminal redox-switch domain of Hsp33: a zinc center sensing peroxide stress conditions and an adjacent linker region responding to unfolding conditions. Neither of these sensors works sufficiently in the absence of the other, making the simultaneous presence of both stress conditions a necessary requirement for Hsp33's full activation. Upon activation, Hsp33's redox-switch domain adopts a natively unfolded conformation, thereby exposing hydrophobic surfaces in its N-terminal substrate-binding domain. The specific activation of Hsp33 by the oxidative unfolding of its redox-switch domain makes this chaperone optimally suited to quickly respond to oxidative stress conditions that lead to protein unfolding. 相似文献

Brassinosteroid-induced exaggerated growth in hydroponically grown Arabidopsis plants 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effects of root application of brassinolide (BL) on the growth and development of Arabidopsis plants ( Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Columbia [L.] Heynh) were evaluated. Initially, all leaves were evaluated on plants 18, 22, 26 and 29 days old. The younger leaves were found to exhibit maximal petiole elongation and upward leaf bending in response to BL treatment. Therefore, based on these results leaves 6, 7 and 8 on 22–24-day-old plants were selected for all subsequent studies. Elongation along the length of the petiole in response to BL treatment was uniform with the exception of an approximately 4 mm region next to the leaf where upward curvature was observed. Both BL and 24-epibrassinolide (24-epiBL) were evaluated, with BL being more effective at lower concentrations than 24-epiBL. The exaggerated growth induced by 0.1 μ M BL was not observed in plants treated with 1 000-fold higher concentrations of GA3 , IAA, NAA or 2,4-D (100 μ M ). In addition, no exaggerated growth effects were observed when plants were treated with 200 ppm ethylene or 1 m M ACC. All treatments with BL, NAA, 2,4-D, IAA or ACC promoted ethylene and ACC production in wild type Arabidopsis plants, but only BL triggered exaggerated plant growth. BL also promoted exaggerated growth and elevated levels of ACC and ethylene in the ethylene insensitive mutant etr1-3 , showing that the effect of BR on growth is independent of ethylene. This work provides evidence that BR-induced exaggerated growth of Arabidopsis plants is independent of gibberellins, auxins and ethylene. 相似文献

Catalytic efficiencies of clay (hectorite), silica and alumina were tested in peptide bond formation reactions of glycine (Gly), alanine (Ala), proline (Pro), valine (Val) and leucine (Leu). The reactions were performed as drying/wetting (hectorite) and temperature fluctuation (silica and alumina) experiments at 85 °C. The reactivity of amino acids decreased in order Gly > Ala > Pro Val Leu. The highest catalytic efficiency was observed for alumina, the only catalyst producing oligopeptides in all investigated reaction systems. The peptide bond formation on alumina is probably catalyzed by the same sites and via similar reaction mechanisms as some alumina-catalyzed dehydration reactions used in industrial chemistry. 相似文献

Heavy metals are required as nutrients for essential functions in microorganisms. However, higher concentrations of these cations are generally toxic and may produce contrasting effects on living organisms. Enterobacter liquefaciens strain C-1, a bacterium isolated from the Moa mine in Cuba, is able to survive in the presence of high concentrations of heavy metals. The proteomes of Enterobacter liquefaciens strain C-1, grown under aerobic conditions in the presence and absence of Co (II) were compared using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis analysis in the isoelectric point range of 4-7 and the mass range of 15-120 kDa. Significant changes in the expression level (> two-fold) were detected for 13 spots: seven and six were up- and down-regulated, respectively. Because the genome of this bacterium is unknown, identification by peptide mass fingerprinting only succeeded in four cases and most of the cross-species identifications were supported by de novo sequencing of tryptic peptides followed by sequence alignment using the MS BLAST program. Twelve different proteins were identified, ten are involved in cellular antioxidant defence probably induced by the presence of Co (II). This is the first step towards understanding the role of proteins participating in the mechanism of resistance to heavy metals in this bacterium. 相似文献

Lasthenia californica sensu Ornduff consists of two races that differ in their flavonoid pigments and edaphic tolerances. Recent phylogenetic studies of Lasthenia have revealed that members of L. californica sensu Ornduff belong to two phylogenetic species. The relationship of the edaphic races to these new species and to each other is the focus of this study. Characterization of flavonoid profiles and phylogenetic placement of 33 populations demonstrates that races and phylogenetic taxa are not concordant, suggesting that one or both edaphic races evolved in parallel in the two clades. We hypothesize an edaphically linked ecological role for flavonoid differences that first revealed the existence of two races. 相似文献
