Change in morphology of the corpus luteum (CL) and patterns of progesterone and estradiol secretion after treatment with melengestrol acetate (MGA) were monitored in postpartum beef cows. Twenty Angus cows were randomly assigned to MGA or MGA + prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF) treatments. All cows were fed 0.5 mg of MGA per cow per day for 14 d. The MGA-treated cows (n = 10) were allowed to return to estrus spontaneously at the second estrus after withdrawal of MGA from the feed. The MGA + PGF-treated cows (n = 10) received an injection containing 25 mg of PGF(2alpha) 17 d after the last feeding of MGA. Cycle 1 was defined as the first luteal phase after MGA feeding and Cycle 2 represented the subsequent cycle or luteal phase after PGF. Blood sampling and transrectal ultrasonography of the ovaries was done daily through the completion of 2 estrous cycles upon removal of MGA from the feed. Blood samples were analyzed for plasma progesterone and estradiol concentrations. Area of CL and fluid-filled cavities within each CL were determined by ultrasonography. Concentrations of progesterone and area of CL were similar between cycles and treatments. Estradiol concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) in Cycle 2 than in Cycle 1. Fluid-filled cavities were larger (P < 0.001) in Cycle 1 than in Cycle 2 for both mid-luteal (Days 5 to 9) and late-luteal (Days 10 to 14) phases. Multiple CL (2 or more during 1 cycle) were observed in 5 cows. Progesterone concentrations and total area of luteal tissue did not change with respect to treatment or cycle, but CL morphology was altered in the first cycle after MGA treatment. Of the 19 cows that ovulated after withdrawal of MGA, 3 experienced a short luteal phase. These data characterize changes that occur among cows that are fed melengestrol acetate during the postpartum period and enhance observations from prior studies regarding MGA use.  相似文献

The antibiotic protein colicin E1 forms ion channels in planar lipid bilayers that are capable of conducting monovalent organic cations having mean diameters of at least 9 Å. Polyvalent organic cations appear to be completely impermeant, regardless of size. All permeant ions, whether large or small, positively or negatively charged, are conducted by this channel at very slow rates. We have examined the permeability of colicin E1 channels to anionic probes having a variety of sizes, shapes, and charge distributions. In contrast to the behavior of cations, polyvalent as well as monovalent organic anions were found to permeate the colicin E1 channel. Inorganic sulfate was able to permeate the channel only when the pH was 4 or less, conditions under which the colicin E1 protein is predominantly in an anion-preferring conformational state. The less selective state(s) of the colicin E1 channel, observed when the pH was 5 or greater, was not permeable to inorganic sulfate. The sulfate salt of the impermeant cation Bis-T6 (N,N,N,N-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine) had no effect on the single channel conductance of colicin E1 channels exposed to solutions containing 1 m NaCl at pH 5. The complete lack of blocking activity by either of these two impermeant ions indicates that both are excluded from the channel lumen. These results are consistent with our hypothesis that there is but a single location in the lumen of the colicin E1 channel where positively charged groups can be effectively hydrated. This site may coincide with the location of the energetic barrier which impedes the movement of anions.The authors wish to thank Dr. F.S. Chiral symmetry breaking can be realized in stirred crystallization of Na-ClO3. We present experimental and theoretical studies of the random distribution of crystal enantiomeric excess (cee) for various stirring and solvent evaporation rates. For a fixed solvent evaporation rate, as the stirring RPM is increased, the probability distribution of cee initially broadens and subsequently develops a sharp peak close to cee = 1. On further increase of stirring rate, the probability distribution once again broadens. This broad probability distribution becomes narrow, with a sharp peak near cee = 1, if the solvent evaporation rate is decreased. Thus we show some ways in which the probability distribution of cee can be controlled in stirred crystallization. In particular, our study shows that the stirring rate and the solvent evaporation rate can be adjusted to maximize crystal enantiomeric excess. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We investigated the role of the N-terminal side of simian virus 40 (SV40) large T antigen's origin-binding domain in the initiation of virus DNA replication by analyzing the biochemical activities of mutants containing single point substitutions or deletions in this region. Four mutants with substitutions at residues between 121 and 135 were partially defective in untwisting the A/T-rich track on the late side of the origin but were normal in melting the imperfect palindrome (IP) region on the early side. Deletion of the N-terminal 109 amino acids had no effect on either activity, whereas a longer deletion, up to residue 123, greatly reduced A/T untwisting but not IP melting. These results indicate that the region from residue 121 to 135 is important for A/T untwisting but not for IP melting and demonstrate that these activities are separable. Two point substitution mutants (126PS and 135PL) were characterized further by testing them for origin DNA binding, origin unwinding, oligomerization, and helicase activity. These two mutants were completely defective in origin (form U(R)) unwinding but normal in the other activities. Our results demonstrate that a failure to normally untwist the A/T track is correlated with a defect in origin unwinding. Further, they indicate that some mutants with substitutions in the region from residue 121 to 135 interact with origin DNA incorrectly, perhaps by failing to make appropriate contacts with the A/T-rich DNA.  相似文献

For 26 tree species in very dry tropical forest in Mexico, the developmental trends of relationships among trunk diameter, tree height, and crown diameter were inferred from a one‐time measurement of dispersed individuals across the size range from saplings to large, mature trees. On hillside sites in this high diversity forest, maximum dimensions were usually <10‐m height, 4‐m crown diameter, and 0.3‐m trunk diameter. The relationship of height to trunk diameter was characterized by an asymptotic, three‐parameter model. Crown diameter was a linear function of trunk diameter. The parameter values for both models varied widely among the species. In general, the dispersion among species of the height–crown diameter relationship increased linearly with trunk diameter (up to 0.2 m). Arborescent cacti were distant from other species at all sizes, although they were well modeled using the same equations. Empirical and theoretical features and limitations of the present and previous models, including mechanical buckling and water‐stress theories, are considered.  相似文献

Estimating population spread rates across multiple species is vital for projecting biodiversity responses to climate change. A major challenge is to parameterise spread models for many species. We introduce an approach that addresses this challenge, coupling a trait‐based analysis with spatial population modelling to project spread rates for 15 000 virtual mammals with life histories that reflect those seen in the real world. Covariances among life‐history traits are estimated from an extensive terrestrial mammal data set using Bayesian inference. We elucidate the relative roles of different life‐history traits in driving modelled spread rates, demonstrating that any one alone will be a poor predictor. We also estimate that around 30% of mammal species have potential spread rates slower than the global mean velocity of climate change. This novel trait‐space‐demographic modelling approach has broad applicability for tackling many key ecological questions for which we have the models but are hindered by data availability.  相似文献

Summary Annual flower production ranged over four orders of magnitude among individuals of the tropical tree Prockia crucis (Flacourtiaceae), but the number of visits per flower by bees did not increase with flower number. In a population in Jalisco, México, the trees flower for about one week each year, offering only pollen to the bees (mostly solitary species). In a small group of trees, the number of visits per flower was less on trees with greater flower production but in a large group visitation did not vary between trees. Pollen flow probably was not directed from large to small trees or vice versa, because the number of flowers per tree did not determine the schedule of visits. The ratio of pollinators to pollen thieves decreased rapidly through the day, while individuals of both groups foraged more rapidly. Most bee species were rare, and only a small subset of medium-sized to large bees were effective pollinators. Large and small groups of trees differed in the relationship between individual flower crop and abundance and diversity of both pollinators and thieves.  相似文献
