Summary The mechanism involved in the positive effect of immobilization on protease production byMyxococcus xanthus was investigated. The results have shown that this phenomenon was not related to the difficulty encountered by the potential repressors to diffuse through the gel beads. The positive effect of immobilization on protease synthesis is the result of a different physiological state of the cells due to the stress caused by immobilization.  相似文献

Landscape‐level forest management has long been hypothesized to affect forest insect outbreak dynamics, but empirical evidence remains elusive. We hypothesized that the combination of increased hardwood relative to host tree species, prevalence of younger forests, and fragmentation of those forests due to forest harvesting legacies would reduce outbreak intensity, increase outbreak frequency, and decrease spatial synchrony in spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana outbreaks. We investigated these hypotheses using tree ring samples collected across 51 sites pooled into 16 subareas distributed across a large ecoregion spanning the international border between Ontario (Canada), and Minnesota (USA). This ecoregion contains contrasting land management zones with clear differences in forest landscape structure (i.e. forest composition and spatial configuration) while minimizing the confounding influence of climate. Cluster analyses of the 76‐yr time‐series generally grouped by subareas found within the same land management zone. Spatial nonparametric covariance analysis indicated that the highest and lowest degree of spatial synchrony of spruce budworm outbreaks were found within unmanaged wilderness and lands managed at fine spatial scales in Minnesota, respectively. Using multivariate analysis, we also found that forest composition, configuration, and climate together accounted for a total of 40% of the variance in outbreak chronologies, with a high level of shared variance between composition and configuration (13%) and between composition and climate (9%). At the scale of our study, climate on its own did not explain any of the spatial variation in outbreaks. Outbreaks were of higher frequency, lower intensity, and less spatially synchronized in more fragmented, younger forests with a lower proportion of host species, with opposing outbreak characteristics observed in regions characterised by older forests with more concentrated host species. Our study is the first quantitative evaluation of the long‐standing ‘silvicultural hypothesis’ of spruce budworm management specifically conducted at a spatio‐temporal scale for which it was intended.  相似文献

In contrast to substantial studies and established knowledge of aluminum (Al) effects (mainly toxicity) on freshwater organisms and terrestrial plants, and even on human health, only a few studies of Al effects on marine organisms have been reported, and our understanding of the role of Al in marine biogeochemistry is limited. In this paper, we review the results of both field and laboratory experiments on the effects of Al on marine organisms, including Al toxicity to marine phytoplankton and the beneficial effects of Al on marine phytoplankton growth, and we discuss possible links of Al to the biological pump and the global carbon cycle. We propose a revised Iron (Fe) Hypothesis, i.e., the Fe–Al Hypothesis that introduces the idea that Al as well as Fe play an important role in the glacial-interglacial change in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and climate change. We propose that Al could not only facilitate Fe utilization, dissolved organic phosphorus utilization and nitrogen fixation by marine phytoplankton, enhancing phytoplankton biomass and carbon fixation in the upper oceans, but also reduce the decomposition and decay of biogenic matter. As a result, Al allows potentially more carbon to be exported and sequestered in the ocean depths through the biological pump. We also propose that Al binds to superoxide to form an Al-superoxide complex, which could catalyze the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and thus facilitate Fe utilization by marine phytoplankton and other microbes. Further ocean fertilization experiments with Fe and Al are suggested, to clarify the role of Al in the stimulation of phytoplankton growth and carbon sequestration in the ocean depths.  相似文献

Interaction between mycorrhizal Basidiomycetes and pine roots in presence of indol-3yl-acetic acid. — La croissance de deux Basidomycètes mycorrhizateurs, Suillus variegatus (Sw. ex Fr.) et S. granulatus (L. ex Fr.) O. Kuntze a été rendue possible dans un milieu contenant au départ des quantités d'acide indol-3yl-acétique (AIA) inhibitrices pour ces champignons. Pour obtenir ce résultat, il a suffi d'ajouter au miliceu, des racines isolées et vivantes de pin (Pinus sylvestris L. et P. resinosa Ait.). Plus la quantité d'AIA ajoutée au départ était grande, plus il fallait de racines pour renverser l'inhibition. L'exsudat des racines n'a produit aucun effet comparable. Des mesures effectuées sur une solution d'IAI ont montré que les racines isolées de pin peuvent accumuler rapidement cette substance. Le taux d'accumulation est maximum aux valeurs de pH inférieures à 4.0 et devient très faible au voisinage de la neutralité. L'auteur formule l'hypothèse qu'au cours de la formation des mycorrhizes ectotrophes chez le pin, la racine en accumulant l'AIA favorise la croissance du champignon en prévenant l'auto-inhibition de son mycélium par l'AIA qu'il produit.  相似文献

Many species frequently return to previously visited foraging sites. This bias towards familiar areas suggests that remembering information from past experience is beneficial. Such a memory‐based foraging strategy has also been hypothesized to give rise to restricted space use (i.e. a home range). Nonetheless, the benefits of empirically derived memory‐based foraging tactics and the extent to which they give rise to restricted space use patterns are still relatively unknown. Using a combination of stochastic agent‐based simulations and deterministic integro‐difference equations, we developed an adaptive link (based on energy gains as a foraging currency) between memory‐based patch selection and its resulting spatial distribution. We used a memory‐based foraging model developed and parameterized with patch selection data of free‐ranging bison Bison bison in Prince Albert National Park, Canada. Relative to random use of food patches, simulated foragers using both spatial and attribute memory are more efficient, particularly in landscapes with clumped resources. However, a certain amount of random patch use is necessary to avoid frequent returns to relatively poor‐quality patches, or avoid being caught in a relatively poor quality area of the landscape. Notably, in landscapes with clumped resources, simulated foragers that kept a reference point of the quality of recently visited patches, and returned to previously visited patches when local patch quality was poorer than the reference point, experienced higher energy gains compared to random patch use. Furthermore, the model of memory‐based foraging resulted in restricted space use in simulated landscapes and replicated the restricted space use observed in free‐ranging bison reasonably well. Our work demonstrates the adaptive value of spatial and attribute memory in heterogeneous landscapes, and how home ranges can be a byproduct of non‐omniscient foragers using past experience to minimize temporal variation in energy gains.  相似文献

Habitat loss and fragmentation are the leading causes of biodiversity decline world-wide. Animals sensitive to fragmentation experience reduced dispersal, breeding opportunities, and genetic diversity, making them vulnerable to local extinction. Over the last few decades the Atlantic Forest of Brazil has been extremely fragmented, with only 11–16% of forest remaining. The Brazilian government and nongovernmental organizations have taken actions through legislation and conservation initiatives to restore forest. Using computer modeling, we compared how alternative forest restoration strategies could improve functional connectivity for golden-headed lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) in Southern Bahia, Brazil. Strategies differed by restoration configuration, including Within- and Across-Property approaches, and restoration amount (0–20% restoration). Increasing restoration amounts resulted in greater species functional connectivity, and Within-Property and Across-Property strategies both had significantly more connectivity than the Random strategy. We suggest restoration management consider the size and placement of restored forest, and that riparian forest be restored first to create dispersal corridors and reestablish essential ecosystem services. We further suggest the importance of forming canopy bridges across narrow sections of rivers during the early stages of the restoration process to promote increased connectivity of these newly restored areas. Our findings can aid managers and landowners in understanding the implications of different restoration strategies for highly arboreal, matrix-sensitive species.  相似文献

To decipher the mechanism underlying the covalent binding of N-phenyl-N'-(2-chloroethyl)ureas (CEU) to the colchicine-binding site on beta(II)-tubulin and to design new and selective antimitotic drugs, we developed 3D quantitative structure-activity relationships (3D-QSAR) models using CoMFA and CoMSIA analyses. The present study correlates the cell growth inhibition activities of 56 structurally related CEU derivatives to several physicochemical parameters representing steric, electrostatic, and hydrophobic fields. Both CoMFA and CoMSIA models using two different optimum numbers of components (ONC) 10 and 4, respectively, gave good internal predictions and their cross-validated r2 values were between 0.639 and 0.743. These comprehensive CoMFA and CoMSIA models are useful in understanding the structure-activity relationships of CEU. The two models were compared to the X-ray crystal structure of the complex of tubulin-colchicine and analyzed for similarities between the two modes of analysis. These models will inspire the design of new CEU derivatives with enhanced inhibition of tumor cell growth and targeting specificity of beta(II)-tubulin and the cytoskeleton.  相似文献

Parasites can play an important role in the dynamics of host populations, but empirical evidence remains sparse. We investigated the role of bot fly (Cuterebra spp.) parasitism in red-backed voles (Myodes gapperi) by first assessing the impacts of the parasite on the probability of vole survival under stressful conditions as well as on the reproductive activity of females. We then identified the main factors driving both the individual risk of infection and the abundance of bot flies inside red-backed voles. Finally, we evaluated the impacts of bot fly prevalence on the growth rate of vole populations between mid-July and mid-August. Thirty-six populations of red-backed voles were sampled in the boreal forest of Québec, Canada. The presence and the abundance of parasites in voles, two host life history traits (sex and body condition), three indices of habitat complexity (tree basal area, sapling basal area, coarse woody debris volume), and vole abundance were considered in models evaluating the effects of bot flies on host populations. We found that the probability of survival of red-backed voles in live traps decreased with bot fly infection. Both the individual risk of infection and the abundance of bot flies in red-backed voles were driven mainly by vole abundance rather than by the two host life history traits or the three variables of habitat complexity. Parasitism had population consequences: bot fly prevalence was linked to a decrease in short-term growth rate of vole populations over the summer. We found that bot flies have the potential to reduce survival of red-backed voles, an effect that may apply to large portions of populations. The relative contribution of compositional and structural heterogeneity on biodiversity is currently ambiguous because field studies generally integrate these two sources of habitat heterogeneity into a single index. We established the relationship between species richness of ground-dwelling and flying beetles and compositional and structural attributes of forest heterogeneity. The relationship was evaluated at two spatial scales: the scale of forest stand, corresponding to an 11.3  m radius, and the scale of landscape, corresponding to either a 400 or 800  m radius. Seventy stands were sampled in the matrix of old-growth boreal forest of the North Shore region of Québec, Canada, during the summers of 2004 and 2005. A total of 133 ground-dwelling beetle species (range: 4–42 species per site) were captured in the pitfall traps and 251 flying species (range 16–58 species per site) in flight-interception traps. We found that the most relevant type of heterogeneity to explain variations in species richness and the significance of landscape scale information varied between groups of beetles. Compositional heterogeneity (i.e. the number of species of forest trees and shrubs) at the stand scale best predicted species richness in ground-dwelling beetles. On the other hand, it was the combined influence of structural and compositional habitat heterogeneity at stand and landscape scales that best explained richness patterns in flying beetles. Our study outlines the significance of considering multiple types and spatial scales of habitat heterogeneity when describing patterns of species richness.  相似文献
