Virtually all studies of mate choice to date have assumed thatfemales choose mates independent of one another. Social cues,however, such as the mate choice of conspecifics, may also playan important role in such decisions. Previous work has shownthat female guppies of similar age copy each other's choiceof mates. Here we examine the effect of relative age on matechoice copying in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, and examinewhether younger individuals are more likely to copy the matechoice of older conspecifics than vice versa. Results indicatethat younger females copy the mate choice of older females,but older individuals do not appear to be influenced by themate choice of younger individuals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify the predictors of chlamydial infection and gonorrhea among patients tested by general practitioners. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: General private practice, family planning and abortion clinic, adolescent clinic, sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic and community health clinic in downtown Montreal. PATIENTS: The 2856 patients were included because of symptoms compatible with an STD, a history of sexual contact with a person known or suspected to have chlamydial infection, a history of a nonexclusive sexual relationship or presentation for an abortion. MEASURES: Patient information was obtained by the attending physician on a standard form. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for Chlamydia trachomatis and culture for Neisseria gonorrhoeae were performed on cervical (female) or urethral (male) samples. Stepwise logistic regression was used to identify the predictors of infection. RESULTS: The EIA results were positive in 11.1% of the cases and the culture results in 2.3%. Among the males chlamydial infection was independently associated with low age (odds ratio [OR] = 0.88 per year), heterosexuality (OR = 4.99), urethral discharge (OR = 3.74) and the absence of a history of gonorrhea (OR = 0.51). Gonorrhea was associated with urethral discharge (OR = 24.3) and homosexuality (OR = 3.68). Among the females chlamydial infection was associated with low age (OR = 0.79 per year), a history of sexual contact with a person known to have chlamydial infection (OR = 2.30), multiple sexual partners in the previous 12 months (OR = 1.60) and a reason for the test other than screening purposes (OR = 0.60). Gonorrhea was associated with a reason other than screening (OR = 0.24) and low age (OR = 0.74 per year). Among the patients tested for screening purposes age was the only significant predictor of chlamydial infection (OR = 0.79 per year), and the prevalence of gonorrhea was 0.4%. The actual rate of chlamydial infection was 11.8% among the patients younger than 25 years, 5.7% among those 25 to 34 years and 0.6% among those over 34. CONCLUSIONS: Age alone can be used as a criterion to screen for chlamydial infection among asymptomatic patients without a history of sexual contact with a person known or suspected to have such infection and with a history of a nonexclusive relationship. The prevalence in our population justifies screening people up to 34 years of age.  相似文献

Whether hiding from predators, or avoiding battlefield casualties, camouflage is widely employed to prevent detection. Disruptive coloration is a seemingly well-known camouflage mechanism proposed to function by breaking up an object''s salient features (for example their characteristic outline), rendering objects more difficult to recognize. However, while a wide range of animals are thought to evade detection using disruptive patterns, there is no direct experimental evidence that disruptive coloration impairs recognition. Using humans searching for computer-generated moth targets, we demonstrate that the number of edge-intersecting patches on a target reduces the likelihood of it being detected, even at the expense of reduced background matching. Crucially, eye-tracking data show that targets with more edge-intersecting patches were looked at for longer periods prior to attack, and passed-over more frequently during search tasks. We therefore show directly that edge patches enhance survivorship by impairing recognition, confirming that disruptive coloration is a distinct camouflage strategy, not simply an artefact of background matching.  相似文献

Both the magnitude and breadth of HIV-specific immunity were evaluated longitudinally on samples collected from six subjects starting highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) preseroconversion (group 1), 11 recently infected subjects starting HAART postseroconversion (group 2), five subjects starting HAART in the second half of the first year of infection (group 3), and six persons starting treatment in the chronic phase of infection (group 4). HIV-specific immunity was measured by IFN-gamma ELISPOT, detecting the frequency of cells responding to a panel of HLA-restricted HIV-1 peptides. Intracellular cytokine staining was used to detect the frequency of HIV-1 Gag p55-specific CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in a subset of participants. The magnitude and breadth of HIV-specific responses persisted in all group 1 subjects and in 5 of 11 (45%) group 2 subjects. Both of these parameters declined in 6 of 11 (55%) group 2 and in all group 3 and 4 individuals. All persons who maintained detectable numbers of HIV-1 Gag p55-specific CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells after starting HAART preserved the intensity and breadth of their HIV-specific effector response. Our results show that HIV-specific immunity can be preserved even if HAART is initiated beyond the acute phase of infection.  相似文献

To date, five members of the downstream of tyrosine kinase (Dok) family have been characterized. In T cells, two members, Dok-1 and Dok-2, are expressed. CD2 or CD28 stimulation, but not CD3/TCR stimulation, induces Dok phosphorylation. Recent evidence suggests that they act as negative regulators of the CD2 and CD28 signaling pathways. To identify the molecular mechanisms involved in Dok-mediated inhibition, we have identified proteins that bind to the phosphotyrosine-binding (PTB) domain of Dok-1 and Dok-2. We showed that the Dok PTB domain mediates phosphotyrosine-dependent homotypic and heterotypic interactions of Dok-1 and Dok-2. Moreover, in CD2-stimulated Jurkat cells, Dok-1 coimmunoprecipitates with tyrosine-phosphorylated Dok-2. To study the involvement of PTB-mediated oligomerization in Dok function, we have generated Jurkat clones overexpressing Dok-1 or Dok-2 with a mutation that prevents oligomerization (in either the PTB domain or Tyr146 of Dok-1 and Tyr139 of Dok-2). These mutations abrogate CD2-induced phosphorylation and the ability of Dok-1 or Dok-2 to inhibit CD2-induced ERK1/2 and NFAT activation. Moreover, overexpression of Dok-1Y146F or Dok-2Y139F interferes with CD2-induced phosphorylation of endogenous Dok, whereas overexpression of PTB mutant or wild-type Dok does not. Taken together, these data indicate that PTB-mediated oligomerization of Dok-1 and Dok-2 represents an essential step for Dok phosphorylation and function.  相似文献

Structural analogues of natural polyamines, which contain a -Si(CH3)2 group in the central carbon chain, have previously been found to be cytotoxic to various tumor cell lines in vitro and to inhibit tumor cell growth in experimentally grafted animals. In the present study, the antioxidative properties of dimethylsilane polyamine analogues were analyzed in comparison with the natural polyamines. Reactivities of these various polyamines against superoxide anions (generated from the hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase reaction) and peroxyl radicals (produced from the thermal decomposition of water-soluble 2,2'-azo-bis-[2-amidinopropane] hydrochloride) were investigated. The dimethysilane analogues, and more particularly the hexamine derivative, exhibited the highest scavenging efficiency towards these two reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, analysis of their ability to prevent hydroxyl radical formation and to trap this ROS showed that the efficiency of the hexamine as a metal chelator and hydroxyl radical scavenger is similar to that of spermine. The higher antioxidant efficiency of the dimethylsilane polyamine analogues with respect to spermidine, together with their ability to displace this polyamine, essential for the promotion of cell growth, from its cellular anionic binding sites that are particularly prone to oxidation, could be biologically relevant and contribute to their in vivo cytotoxic effect and anti-tumor activity. Further experiments will be necessary to demonstrate clearly the relationship between their antioxidant properties and their antiproliferative effects.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the seasonal timing and diel activity patterns of lacustrine brook charr when migrating to a lake outlet for spawning, and (2) the homing of reproducing individuals. In 1995, 745 individuals were captured while migrating to the spawning ground compared to 1148 in 1996. In both years, the sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 but females were significantly longer than males. The spawning migrations lasted about 48d and were more nocturnal (between 20:00 and 8:00h) than diurnal. The migration to the spawning ground began when water temperature decreased to 13°C and peaked when water temperature decreased from 11°C to 7°C. Peaks in migration activity were always preceded by a sudden decrease followed by an increase in temperature. The spawning migration lasted until the third week of October, when water temperature varied between 3°C and 8°C. Males, especially larger ones, arrived on the spawning ground before females in both years. The length of males migrating to the spawning ground decreased during the spawning season while the females' length showed no pattern. Only 9.7% of the 745 fin-clipped individuals from 1995 returned to the lake outlet to spawn in 1996. The results of this study indicate that lacustrine brook charr show similarities to other anadromous and lake-spawning salmonid populations when migrating to spawning grounds.  相似文献

Successful direct transfer of vitrified sheep embryos   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The use of a simple cryopreservation method, adapted to direct transfer of thawed embryos may help to reduce the costs of embryo transfer in sheep and increase the use of this technique genetic improvement of this species. Two experiments were made to test a vitrification method that is easy to apply in field conditions. All embryos were collected at Day 7 of the estrous cycle of FSH-stimulated donor ewes and were assessed morphologically, washed in modified PBS and incubated for 5 min in 10% glycerol, for 5 min in 10% glycerol and 20% ethylene glycol and were transferred into the vitrification solution (25% glycerol and 25% ethylene glycol). All solutions were based on mPBS. Embryos were loaded in straws (1 cm central part, the remaining parts being filled with 0.8 M galactose in mPBS) and plunged into liquid N2 within 30 sec of contact with the vitrification solution. The straws were thawed (10 sec at 20 degrees C) and the embryos were either transferred directly or after 5 min of incubation in the content of the straw (followed by washing in PBS) into the uterus of a recipient ewe. In Trial 1, the pregnancy rates at term (72 vs. 72%) as well as the embryo survival rates (60 vs 50% respectively) were not different between fresh (n = 48 embryos) and vitrified (n = 50) embryos. In a second trial no difference was observed between vitrified embryos transferred after in vitro removal of the cryoprotectant (n = 86 embryos) or directly after thawing (n = 72) both in terms of lambing rate (67 vs. 75%, respectively) and embryo survival rate (lambs born/embryos transferred; 49 vs. 53%). This method of sheep embryo cryopreservation provided high pregnancy and embryo survival, even after direct transfer of the embryos.  相似文献
