Stereological methods were used to compare thyroids of dwarf mice and of their heterozygote littermates. In the thyroid of dwarf mice unorganized cellular masses, adipous tissue and ultimobranchial cysts are abundant. Follicles are small and their distribution function is unimodal. The number of cells per follicle is considerably lowered if compared with the normal. In control mice the distribution function of thyroid follicles is bimodal. These data show that the origin of the thyroid anomaly in dwarf mice is due to a drastic diminution of cell divisions, probably resulting from the lack of growth hormone. 相似文献

Far red light given before darkness highly increased droughtresistance of cotton plants. There was higher stomatal resistancein leaves resulting in a lower transpiration rate. The aim ofthis work was to examine the effect of far red light on rootgrowth and its effect on water transfer measured by analysisof xylem sap obtained after cutting the hypocotyl. Short-termand long-term treatments of far red light were used. In thepresence of far red light, the amount of xylem sap decreasedwhile root resistance increased. Qualitative analysis of thexylem sap indicated an increase of amino acid content and analteration of potassium flux. Calcium flux was not significantlymodified. Spinach DNA dependent RNA polymerase was purified from isolated chloroplasts by two different procedures. Analysis of the protein composition of the two preparations by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis always shows six abundant polypeptides with Mr of 150, 110, 102, 80, 75 and 38 Kd and one less abundant polypeptide of 25 Kd. Some other proteins ranging from 40–70 Kd in Mr are also detected but in a minor and variable amount. The two preparations have an optimum of enzyme activity at 30°C and at 15 mM (NH4)2SO4 when tested with denatured calf thymus DNA. Binding experiments with two different nick translated fragments of spinach chloroplast DNA show that the 80 and 75 Kd polypeptides possess a strong DNA binding capacity. 相似文献

Desmosine and isodesmosine are two isomers representing the main cross-links of elastin. We describe a new isomer, photodesmosine, which is produced by the photolysis of desmosine at 254 nm. The mechanism of this photolysis is described and is shown to consist of two competing paths. After opening of the pyridium ring to give a tetrasubstituted aminoketone, this compound can either be hydrolysed to give lysine and a trisubstituted analogue of glutaconic aldehyde or undergo a recyclisation and rearomatisation to give a pyridium compound substituted in positions 1, 2, 3 and 4. An understanding of this mechanism is important in order to use photolysis as a specific method to break elastin cross-links. Although only desmosine and isodesmosine have been reported in purified elastin, the chromatographic properties of photodesmosine suggests that if other natural isomers exist in this protein they could be eluted from an ion-exchange resin at much earlier times than those observed in the case of the two already described cross-links. 相似文献
