Therapy and visitation dogs are becoming more common on college campuses to provide comfort and support to students, but little attention has been given to the concerns of faculty and staff who share space with the dogs in their workplaces. The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions of faculty and staff with regard to both the benefits and the hazards (e.g., dander, bites, fleas) and risks associated with the presence of visitation dogs in their workplaces. One hundred and thirty-eight employees who worked in buildings with resident visitation dogs completed an online survey about their perceptions of the hazards and risks of the dogs and the effects of dogs on the wellbeing of both students and employees. In general, employees perceived that the dogs presented minimal risks, and most employees believed that they can reduce stress and provide comfort to students on campus. There were a few employees, however, who reported that the dogs did not improve the work environment and conferred no benefits to the staff or students. The findings of the present survey support the mostly positive attitudes that people have for dogs in the workplace, but they also highlight a potential challenge: accommodating individuals who believe very strongly that dogs do not belong in work environments. 相似文献

This paper reviews data on mammary leptin and leptin receptor gene expression as well as on blood and milk leptin levels during the pregnancy-lactation cycle in humans, rodents and ruminants, with the aim of better understanding milk leptin origin and functions. The few published papers report that leptin may be produced by different cell types in the mammary tissue, and may act as a paracrine factor on mammary epithelial cell proliferation, differentiation and/or apoptosis via adipose-epithelial and/or myoepithelial-epithelial cellular interactions. In addition to leptin synthesis, epithelial cells may transfer leptin from the blood, and these two mechanisms may account for the presence of leptin in the milk. The respective parts of these two processes remain to be determined, as well as the true milk leptin levels. Indeed, reported concentrations for milk leptin vary strongly according to species and mainly according to the milk fractions and the assay methods used. If leptin levels in milk (and specially colostrum) are found to be significant, this hormone could be involved in neonate physiology. 相似文献

New series of 2(or 3)-arylmethylenenaphtho[2,1-b]furan-3(or 2)-ones were synthesized, characterized and tested for anticancer properties in vitro. The target compounds were prepared by Knoevenagel coupling between the naphthofuranones 3, 28-30 and formyl derivatives. 2-(4-Oxo-1-benzopyran-3-ylmethylene)naphtho[2,1-b]furan-3-one 36 was the most active compound (IC50 (L1210) = 1.6 microM). Mobbing behaviour against predators is well documented but less is known about the factors influencing variation in behavioural response between prey species. We conducted a series of playback experiments to examine how the mobbing responses of prey species differed according to their relative risk of predation by the Eurasian Pygmy Owl Glaucidium passerinum, a predator of passerines. We found that mobbing among 22 passerine prey species was positively correlated with their prevalence in the Pygmy Owl diet. To compare mobbing behaviour between two seasons, we conducted playback experiments during spring (breeding season) and autumn (non‐breeding season). Contrary to previous studies, we found that mobbing intensity was greater during autumn than in spring. Our study shows a differential mobbing response of 22 species to the calls from one predator species and underscores the importance of considering seasonal variation in mobbing behaviour. Mobbing response differences observed among bird species strongly suggest different cooperation behaviour at the community level. 相似文献

The regulation of macrophage phenotype by neutrophils was studied in the s.c. polyvinyl alcohol sponge wound model in mice made neutropenic by anti-Gr-1 Ab, as well as in cell culture. Wounds in neutropenic mice contained 100-fold fewer neutrophils than those in nonneutropenic controls 1 day after sponge implantation. Wound fluids from neutropenic mice contained 68% more TNF-alpha, 168% more IL-6, and 61% less TGF-beta1 than those from controls. Wound fluid IL-10 was not different between the two groups, and IL-4 was not detected. Intracellular TNF-alpha staining was greater in cells isolated from neutropenic wounds than in those from control wounds. The hypothesis that wound neutrophil products modulate macrophage phenotype was tested in Transwell cocultures of LPS-stimulated J774A.1 macrophages and day 1 wound cells (84% neutrophils/15% macrophages). Overnight cocultures accumulated 60% less TNF-alpha and IL-6 than cultures of J774A.1 alone. The suppression of cytokine release was mediated by a soluble factor(s), because culture supernatants from wound cells inhibited TNF-alpha and IL-6 release from LPS-stimulated J774A.1 cells. Culture supernatants from purified wound neutrophils equally suppressed TNF-alpha release from LPS-stimulated J774A.1 cells. Wound cell supernatants also suppressed TNF-alpha and superoxide release from murine peritoneal macrophages. The TNF-alpha inhibitory factor has a molecular mass <3000 Da and is neither PGE2 nor adenosine. The present findings confirm a role for neutrophils in the regulation of innate immune responses through modulation of macrophage phenotype. 相似文献

The flagellar root system of Entosiphon sulcatum (Dujardin) Stein (Euglenophyceae) is described and compared with kinetoplastid and other euglenoid systems. An asymmetric pattern of three microtubular roots, one between the two flagellar basal bodies and one on either side (here called the intermediate, dorsal, and ventral roots), is consistent within the euglenoid flagellates studied thus far. The dorsal root is associated with the basal body of the anterior flagellum (F1) and lies on the left dorsal side of the basal body complex. Originating between the two flagellar basal bodies, and associated with the basal body of the trailing flagellum (F2), the intermediate root is morphologically distinguished by fibrils interconnecting the individual microtubules to one another and to the over lying reservoir membrane. The intermediate root is often borne on a ridge projecting into the reservoir. The ventral root originates near the F2 basal body and lies on the right ventral side of the cell. Fibrillar connections link the membrane of F2 with the reservoir membrane at the reservoircanal transition level. A large cross-banded fiber joins the two flagellar basal bodies, and a series of smaller striated fibers links the anterior accessory and flagellar basal bodies. Large nonstriated fibers extend from the basal body complex posteriorly into the cytoplasm. 相似文献
