The results of a pilot-scale phytoremediation study are reported in this paper. Small plots of trees established on a closed municipal waste landfill site were irrigated with recovered groundwater containing 1,4-dioxane (dioxane) and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The plots were managed to minimize the leaching of irrigation water, and leaching was quantified by the use of bromide tracer. Results indicated that the dioxane (2.5 μg/L) was effectively removed, probably via phytovolatilization, and that a full-scale phytoremediation system could be used. A system is now in place at the site in which the recovered groundwater can be treated using two different approaches. A physical treatment system (PTS) will be used during the winter months, and a 12 ha phytoremediation system (stands of coniferous trees) will be used during the growing season. The PTS removes VOCs using an air-stripper, and destroys dioxane using a photo-catalytic oxidation process. Treated water will be routed to the local sewer system. The phytoremediation system, located on the landfill, will be irrigated with effluent from the PTS air-stripper containing dioxane. Seasonal use of the phytoremediation system will reduce reliance on the photo-catalytic oxidation process that is extremely energy consumptive and expensive to operate.  相似文献

A simple, accurate, precise and validated spectrofluorimetric method is proposed for the determination of two cephalosporins, namely, cefadroxile (cefa) and cefuroxime sodium (cefu) in pharmaceutical formulations. The method is based on a reaction between cephalosporins with 1,2‐naphthoquinone‐4‐sulfonate in alkaline medium, to form fluorescent derivatives that are extracted with chloroform and subsequently measured at 610 and 605 nm after excitation at 470 and 460 nm for cefa and cefu respectively. The optimum experimental conditions have been studied. Beer's law is obeyed over the concentrations of 20–70 ng/mL and 15–40 ng/mL for cefa and cefu, respectively. The detection limits were 4.46 ng/mL and 3.02 ng/mL with a linear regression correlation coefficient of 0.9984 and 0.998, and recoveries ranging 97.50–109.96% and 95.73–98.89% for cefa and cefu, respectively. The effects of pH, temperature, reaction time, 1,2‐naphthoquinone‐4‐sulfonic concentration and extraction solvent on the determination of cefa and cefu, have been examined. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human cancer, especially in individuals with light skin phototypes (i.e., Fitzpatrick I-II skin type). Many affected develop multiple BCCs during their lifetime. It is not uncommon to observe elderly patients with >5 BCCs. In this study, we explored whether for patients diagnosed with multiple BCCs, analyzing the genomic mutations in one tumor could be sufficient to derive meaningful molecular/genetic conclusions regarding the other BCC tumors. Following the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) best practices we have completed the study of 6 BCCs that occurred in an 83-year-old Caucasian male due to sun exposure. We have analyzed exome sequencing data of each BCC tumor and matched normal skin samples. We identified that BCCs from the same patient shared some of the key driver mutations, but they also displayed significant intertumoral heterogeneity. This finding may in part explain the different clinical progression/evolution of BCCs observed in the same patient. This work also highlights the value of characterizing multiple BCCs in one individual to identify patient-specific genetic events with a potential link to other malignancies and implications for personalized medicine.  相似文献
