For consumers today, the perceived ethicality of a food’s production method can be as important a purchasing consideration as its price. Still, few studies have examined how, neurofunctionally, consumers are making ethical, food-related decisions. We examined how consumers’ ethical concern about a food’s production method may relate to how, neurofunctionally, they make decisions whether to purchase that food. Forty-six participants completed a measure of the extent to which they took ethical concern into consideration when making food-related decisions. They then underwent a series of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans while performing a food-related decision-making (FRDM) task. During this task, they made 56 decisions whether to purchase a food based on either its price (i.e., high or low, the “price condition”) or production method (i.e., with or without the use of cages, the “production method condition”), but not both. For 23 randomly selected participants, we performed an exploratory, whole-brain correlation between ethical concern and differential neurofunctional activity in the price and production method conditions. Ethical concern correlated negatively and significantly with differential neurofunctional activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). For the remaining 23 participants, we performed a confirmatory, region-of-interest (ROI) correlation between the same variables, using an 8-mm3 volume situated in the left dlPFC. Again, the variables correlated negatively and significantly. This suggests, when making ethical, food-related decisions, the more consumers take ethical concern into consideration, the less they may rely on neurofunctional activity in the left dlPFC, possibly because making these decisions is more routine for them, and therefore a more perfunctory process requiring fewer cognitive resources.  相似文献

Endostatin has attracted considerable attention because of its ability to inhibit angiogenesis. This property of monomeric endostatin contrasts with that of the trimeric endostatin moiety generated from the intact C-terminal domain of collagen XVIII that induces a promigratory phenotype in endothelial cells. This activity is inhibited by monomeric endostatin. In this study we demonstrate that the effect of oligomeric endostatin can also be inhibited by exogenous glycosaminoglycans in a size-dependent manner, with heparin oligosaccharides containing more than 20 monosaccharide residues having optimal inhibitory activity. Oligomeric endostatin was also found to induce morphological changes in Chinese hamster ovary cells, an epithelial cell line. This novel observation allowed the utilization of a panel of Chinese hamster ovary cell mutants with defined glycosaminoglycan biosynthetic defects. The action of oligomeric endostatin on these cells was shown to be dependent on cell surface glycosaminoglycans, principally heparan sulfate with N- and 6-O-sulfation of glucosamine residues rather than iduronate 2-O-sulfation being important for bioactivity. The responsiveness of a cell line (pgsE-606) with globally reduced heparan sulfate sulfation and shortened S domains, however, indicates that overall heparan sulfate domain patterning is the key determinant of the bioactivity of oligomeric endostatin. Purified heparin-monomeric endostatin constructs generated by zero-length cross-linking techniques were found to be unable to inhibit the action of oligomeric endostatin. This indicates a mechanism for the perturbation of oligomeric endostatin action by its monomeric counterpart via competition for glycosaminoglycan attachment sites at the cell surface.  相似文献

Recent advances in plant molecular biology offer a means of reaping the benefits of biotechnology, while potentially assuaging consumer concerns by re-inserting native DNA back into plants. Results are presented from nationwide surveys in the U.S. and France, indicating that more consumers would accept ingenic plants than transgenic plants, with twice as many U.S. than French consumers considering food produced through biotechnology eatable.  相似文献

The gut peptide ghrelin has been shown to stimulate food intake after both peripheral and central administration, and the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus has been proposed to be the major site for mediating this feeding stimulatory action. Ghrelin receptors are widely distributed in the brain, and hindbrain ghrelin administration has been shown to potently stimulate feeding, suggesting that there may be other sites for ghrelin action. In the present study, we have further assessed potential sites for ghrelin action by comparing the ability of lateral and fourth ventricular ghrelin administration to stimulate food intake and alter patterns of hypothalamic gene expression. Ghrelin (0.32, 1, or 3.2 nmol) in the lateral or fourth ventricle significantly increased food intake in the first 4 h after injection, with no ventricle-dependent differences in degree or time course of hyperphagia. One nanomole of ghrelin into either the lateral or fourth ventricle resulted in similar increases in arcuate nucleus neuropeptide Y mRNA expression. Expression levels of agouti-related peptide or proopiomelanocortin mRNA were not affected by ghrelin administration. These data demonstrate that ghrelin can affect food intake and hypothalamic gene expression through interactions at multiple brain sites.  相似文献

We examined abundances of fishes by ecological categories for variation with time (years) and longitudinal river distance (km) in the Wabash River, a large US Midwestern river. An ordination resulted in significant correlations with time for an axis that represented increases in surface-feeding invertivores and species that prefer sand substrates. We found increased abundances of planktivores and species with high tolerance to silt in downstream river sites. We found significant changes in abundance for the majority of ecological categories in comparisons of upstream–downstream locations. There was a general decrease in abundances of taxa in ecological categories that tend to inhabit upstream reaches: species that prefer rubble substrates, inhabit fast, and moderate current velocity habitats, and that have low silt tolerance with time. These abundance changes suggest that the upstream river experienced increased sedimentation during 1974–1998. The use of ecological categories provided information for likely habitat changes, such as increased sedimentation, that were not apparent in previous taxonomic analyses. We suggest that combinations of anthropogenic impacts including hydrologic alterations and agricultural activities in the Wabash River resulted in ecosystem changes and subsequent changes in abundance of fishes by ecological categories.  相似文献

Information on the fine-scale movement of predators and their prey is important to interpret foraging behaviours and activity patterns. An understanding of these behaviours will help determine predator-prey relationships and their effects on community dynamics. For instance understanding a predator's movement behaviour may alter pre determined expectations of prey behaviour, as almost any aspect of the prey's decisions from foraging to mating can be influenced by the risk of predation. Acoustic telemetry was used to study the fine-scale movement patterns of the Broadnose Sevengill shark Notorynchus cepedianus and its main prey, the Gummy shark Mustelus antarcticus, in a coastal bay of southeast Tasmania. Notorynchus cepedianus displayed distinct diel differences in activity patterns. During the day they stayed close to the substrate (sea floor) and were frequently inactive. At night, however, their swimming behaviour continually oscillated through the water column from the substrate to near surface. In contrast, M. antarcticus remained close to the substrate for the entire diel cycle, and showed similar movement patterns for day and night. For both species, the possibility that movement is related to foraging behaviour is discussed. For M. antarcticus, movement may possibly be linked to a diet of predominantly slow benthic prey. On several occasions, N. cepedianus carried out a sequence of burst speed events (increased rates of movement) that could be related to chasing prey. All burst speed events during the day were across the substrate, while at night these occurred in the water column. Overall, diel differences in water column use, along with the presence of oscillatory behaviour and burst speed events suggest that N. cepedianus are nocturnal foragers, but may opportunistically attack prey they happen to encounter during the day.  相似文献

We screened 5,700 Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium mutants for defects in type III secretion system 1 (T3SS-1)-mediated contact-dependent hemolysis to identify novel genes and pathways affecting the activity of T3SS-1. Our data suggest that previously unrecognized factors such as type I fimbriae may modulate the expression, activity, or deployment of this key virulence factor.  相似文献

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae origin recognition complex (ORC) is composed of six subunits and is an essential component in the assembly of the replication apparatus. To probe the organization of this multiprotein complex by electron microscopy, each subunit was tagged on either its C or N terminus with biotin and assembled into a complex with the five other unmodified subunits. A nanoscale biopointer consisting of a short DNA duplex with streptavidin at one end was used to map the location of the N and C termini of each subunit. These observations were made using ORC free in solution and bound to the ARS1 origin of replication. This mapping confirms and extends previous studies mapping the sites of subunit interaction with origin DNA. In particular, we provide new information concerning the stoichiometry of the ORC-ARS1 complex and the changes in conformation that are associated with DNA binding by ORC. This versatile, new approach to mapping protein structure has potential for many applications.  相似文献
