In a fine-grained Lower to Middle Kimmeridgian marly limestone rhythmite succession, with scarce benthos, fluctuations in ecological and depositional conditions that affected the substrate are detected by analysing trace-fossil assemblages. The dominant grey mudstones with Chondrites and Planolites superimposed on lumpy matrix sediments indicate both late colonisation of dysaerobic mixed layers and the completeness of the stratigraphic record. Major disruptions in rhythmic deposition and substrate colonisation are recorded at the base of thick intercalations of marls in sedimentary packages that were related to tectonic instability. Minor disruptions affected only the deposition of the overlying limestone beds. The trace-fossils reveal changes in the ecological and depositional conditions affecting the substrate during deposition of monotonous marly limestone rhythmites at levels of resolution higher than biostratigraphic, ecostratigraphic and taphonomic resolution. This research demonstrates the application of trace-fossil analysis to approach stratigraphic completeness (maturation) in homogeneous marly limestone rhythmites  相似文献

Phenotypic variation, measured as the coefficient of variation (CV), is usually larger in secondary sexual characters than in ordinary morphological traits. We tested if intraspecific differences in the CV between ornamental and non-ornamental feather traits in 67 evolutionary events of feather ornamentation in birds were due to differences in (1) the allometric pattern (slope of the regression line when regressing trait size on an indicator of body size), or (2) the dispersion of observations around the regression line. We found that only dispersion of observations around the regression line contributed significantly to total variation. A large dispersion of observations around the regression line for ornamental feathers is consistent with these characters showing condition-dependence, supporting indicator models of sexual selection more strongly than a pure Fisher process. Ornamental feathers in males demonstrated negative allometry when regressed on tarsus length, which is a measure of skeletal body size. This finding is consistent with ornamental feather traits being subject to directional selection due to female mate preferences, where large body size is less important than in male–male competition. This pattern of phenotypic variation for avian secondary sexual characters contrasts with patterns of variation for insect genitalia, supposedly subject to sexual selection, since the latter traits only differ from ordinary morphology traits in allometry coefficient. The prevailing regime of selection (directional or stabilizing) and the effects of environmental factors are proposed to account for these differences among traits.  相似文献

We performed an epidemiological study on Salmonella isolated from raw plant-based feed in Spanish mills. Overall, 32 different Salmonella serovars were detected. Despite its rare occurrence in humans and animals, Salmonella enterica serovar California was found to be the predominant serovar in Spanish feed mills. Different typing techniques showed that isolates of this serovar were genetically closely related, and comparative genomic hybridization using microarray technology revealed 23 S. enterica serovar Typhimurium LT2 gene clusters that are absent from serovar California.  相似文献

The colonization ability of Pseudomonas fluorescens F113rif in alfalfa rhizosphere and its interactions with the alfalfa microsymbiont Sinorhizobium meliloti EFB1 has been analyzed. Both strains efficiently colonize the alfalfa rhizosphere in gnotobiotic systems and soil microcosms. Colonization dynamics of F113rif on alfalfa were similar to other plant systems previously studied but it is displaced by S. meliloti EFB1, lowering its population by one order of magnitude in co-inoculation experiments. GFP tagged strains used to study the colonization patterns by both strains indicated that P. fluorescens F113rif did not colonize root hairs while S. meliloti EFB1 extensively colonized this niche. Inoculation of F113rif had a deleterious effect on plants grown in gnotobiotic systems, possibly because of the production of HCN and the high populations reached in these systems. This effect was reversed by co-inoculation. Pseudomonas fluorescens F113 derivatives with biocontrol and bioremediation abilities have been developed in recent years. The results obtained support the possibility of using this bacterium in conjunction with alfalfa for biocontrol or rhizoremediation technologies.  相似文献

Limited availability of endothelial tissue is a major constraint when investigating the cellular mechanisms of endothelial dysfunction in patients with metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. We propose a novel approach that combines collection of 200-1,000 endothelial cells from a superficial forearm vein or the radial artery, with reliable measurements of protein expression by quantitative immunofluorescence analysis. This method was validated against immunoblot analysis in cultured endothelial cells. Levels of vascular endothelial cell activation, oxidative stress, and nitric oxide synthase expression were measured and compared in five patients with severe chronic heart failure and in four healthy age-matched subjects. In summary, vascular endothelial biopsy coupled with measurement of protein expression by quantitative immunofluorescence analysis provides a novel approach to the study of the vascular endothelium in humans.  相似文献

According to the free radical theory of aging, oxygen-derived free radicals causes the age-associated impairment at the cellular and tissue levels. The mitochondrial theory of aging points to mitochondria, and specially mitochondrial DNA, as the major targets of free radical attack upon aging. Thus, oxidative damage to mtDNA accumulate with age in human and rodent tissues and also is inversely related to maximum life span of mammals. Mitochondrial deficits, such as a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential, occur upon aging due to oxidative damage. The age-related mitochondrial oxidative stress may be prevented by late onset administration of certain antioxidants, such as Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761. These antioxidants may also delay the physiological impairment associated with aging.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The colonies of the Spanish desert ant Cataglyphis iberica are polydomous. This study describes the temporal and spatial patterns of the polydomy in this species at two different sites, and presents analyses of its role in reducing the attacks of the queen over sexual brood, and in allowing better habitat exploitation.
2. The spatial distribution of nests was clumped while colonies were distributed randomly. Mean nearest neighbour distance ranged from 3.4 to 7.0 m for nests and from 12.3 to 14.1 m for colonies. Distance of foragers searching for food varied among nests: mean values were between 6.1 and 12.6 m.
3. At both sites, the maximum number of nests per colony occurred in summer, during the maximum activity period of the species. Colonies regrouped at the end of this period but overwintered in several nests.
4. Nest renewal in C. iberica colonies was high and showed great temporal variability: nests changed (open, close, re-open) continuously through the activity season and/or among years. The lifetime of up to 55% of nests was only 1–3 months.
5. Polydomy in C. iberica might decrease the interactions between the queen and the sexual brood. In all colonies excavated just before the mating period, the nest containing the queen did not contain any virgin female. Females were in the queenless nests of the colony.
6. The results also suggest that polydomous C. iberica colonies may enhance habitat exploitation because foraging activity per colony increases with nest number. The relationship between total prey input and foraging efficiency and number of nests per colony attains a plateau or even decreases after a certain colony size (four to six nests). This value agrees with the observed mean number of nests per colony in C. iberica .  相似文献

The appearance of the neocortex, its expansion, and its differentiation in mammals, represents one of the principal episodes in the evolution of the vertebrate brain. One of the fundamental questions in neuroscience is what is special about the neocortex of humans and how does it differ from that of other species? It is clear that distinct cortical areas show important differences within both the same and different species, and this has led to some researchers emphasizing the similarities whereas others focus on the differences. In general, despite of the large number of different elements that contribute to neocortical circuits, it is thought that neocortical neurons are organized into multiple, small repeating microcircuits, based around pyramidal cells and their input-output connections. These inputs originate from extrinsic afferent systems, excitatory glutamatergic spiny cells (which include other pyramidal cells and spiny stellate cells), and inhibitory GABAergic interneurons. The problem is that the neuronal elements that make up the basic microcircuit are differentiated into subtypes, some of which are lacking or highly modified in different cortical areas or species. Furthermore, the number of neurons contained in a discrete vertical cylinder of cortical tissue varies across species. Additionally, it has been shown that the neuropil in different cortical areas of the human, rat and mouse has a characteristic layer specific synaptology. These variations most likely reflect functional differences in the specific cortical circuits. The laminar specific similarities between cortical areas and between species, with respect to the percentage, length and density of excitatory and inhibitory synapses, and to the number of synapses per neuron, might be considered as the basic cortical building bricks. In turn, the differences probably indicate the evolutionary adaptation of excitatory and inhibitory circuits to particular functions.  相似文献
