Neue,abgewandelte pseudoguajanolide aus Psilostrophe villosa

Investigation of the North American species Psilostrophe villosa afforded, in addition to known compounds, five new sesquiterpene lactones, which all turn out to be modified pseudoguaianolides, most of them closely related to hymenolide. However, one of the lactones is a new type of nor-pseudoguaianolide. Furthermore a new monoacetylated borneol-β-D-glucoside is present. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.     

Studies on adenylate cyclase-cyclic AMP system of the myopathic hamster (UM-X7.1) skeletal and cardiac muscles.

Cyclic AMP content, adenylate cyclase (EC 4.6.1.1) activity and phosphodiesterase I (EC 3.1.4.1) activity of the hind leg skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle in 60- and 150-day-old normal and myopathic (UM-X7.1) hamsters were examined. In 60-day-old myopathic animals, cardiac cyclic AMP levels were higher and phosphodiesterase I activity was lower, without any changes in the basal adenylate cyclase activity, whereas in 150-day-old myopathic hamsters, cardiac cyclic AMP and basal adenylate cyclase activity were lower, without any changes in the homogenate phosphodiesterase I activity. On the other hand, basal adenylate cyclase and phosphodiesterase I activities in the skeletal muscle homogenate from 60- and 150-day-old myopathic animals were not different from the normal values but the skeletal muscle cyclic AMP levels were significantly less in 60-day-old myopathic hamsters only. The plasma cyclic AMP levels in 60-day-old myopathic hamsters, unlike 150-day-old myopathic animals, were higher than the normal. Although these results reveal differences in myopathic cardiac and skeletal muscles, it is concluded that changes in adenylate cyclase-cyclic AMP system in myopathy are dependent upon the degree of disease.     

Three germacranolides and other constituents from Eremanthus species

The re-investigation of Eremanthus glomerulatus afforded three new germacranolides and a guaianolide, while from E. mollis two known furanoheliangolides and a new phenylpropanol derivative were isolated. The germacranolides most probably are precursors of the widespread glaucolides. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.     

New germacranolides,guaianolides and rearranged Guaianolides from Lasiolaena santosii

The aerial parts of L. santosii afforded three new diterpenes, a phenylpropanol, three eudesmane derivatives, three germacranolides, seventeen guaianolides and four rearranged guaianolides of a, so far, unknown type. Furthermore, several known compounds were isolated. The structures of the new compounds, the separations of which caused difficulties, were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by some chemical transformations. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.

8-Hydroxypegolettiolide,a sesquiterpene lactone with a new carbon skeleton and further constituents from Pegolettia senegalensis

The investigation of Pegolettia senegalensis afforded several new sesquiterpene lactones, eight cis-6,12-germacra-trans,trans-1(10),4,11-trienolides, five cis-6,12-eudesmanolides, two elemanolides, 8,14-cyclogermacra-1(10),4,7(11)-trien-6,12-olide with a new carbon skeleton, three germacra-1(10),4,11(13)-trien-12-oic acids with ester residues at C-8, 18-hydroxygeranyl nerol, 1,3-dihydroxyoctadecane and a mixture of esters of 3,4-dihydroxy-dihydrocinnamyl alcohol. The structures were elucidated by high field ¹HNMR spectroscopy and some chemical transformations. The C-10 configuration of 6,12-cis-eudesmanolides from Calostephane divaricata and Inula crithmoides most likely has to be corrected. The chemotaxonomic situation of the genus Pegolettia and biogenetic considerations are discussed briefly.     

Characterization of archaeal symbionts of sponges from the coral reef ecosystems of the Gulf of Mannar,Southeast coast of India

Sponges accommodate a diverse group of microorganisms with varied metabolic capabilities. The bacterial associates of sponges are widely studied while our understanding of archaeal counterparts is scanty. In the present study, we report the archaeal associates of two sponges, Pseudoceratina purpurea (NCBI barcode: KX454492) and Cinachyra sp. (NCBI barcode: KX454495), found in the coral reef ecosystems of Gulf of Mannar, India. Archaea in the water column was predominated by members of class Halobacteria of Phylum Euryarchaeota (97%) followed by a minor fraction (3%) of Nitrosopumilus sp. of phylum Thaumarchaeota. Interestingly, Thaumarchaeota was identified as the sole archaeal population associated with the two sponges studied, among which Nitrosopumilus sp. occuppied 80 and 100% of the sequences in the clone library of P. purpurea and Cinachyra sp. respectively. Other archaea found in the P. purpurea were Nitrososphaera (10%) and unclassified ones (10%). The study identified Nitrosopumilus sp. as a unique symbiotic archaeon of sponges, P. purpurea and Cinachyra sp. The existence of host driven factors in selecting specific associates from a diverse group of archaea in the environment may need further investigations.
