Analysis of articulation of fricative praealveolar sibilant "S" in control population

Defective pronunciation of one or more mother language phones, i.e. dyslalia, represents the most frequent speech impairment both in children and adult people. Cases of persisting speech disorder need professional approach and help. The aim of the study was to obtain a model of physiological articulation of the sibilant "s" in children. The method of FFT spectral analysis was made use of. Results will serve for further use in evaluation of speech impairment.     

Physiological activity of immobilized cells of Claviceps fusiformis during long-term semicontinuous cultivation

Summary The 550-day semicontinuous cultivation of Claviceps fusiformis immobilized in calcium alginate is documented. The vegetative mycelium from seed or from early-production submerged culture is the best choice for immobilization. No extracellular glucans are produced by immobilized cells. Immobilized spores give low yields of clavine alkaloids. Alginate concentrations in a range of 2%–4% do not influence yield and spectrum of alkaloids. The cytoplasm of the immobilized cells becomes condensed (after 3 days), polysaccharides disappear, and centres of lipid synthesis are formed in the cytoplasm. After 60 days the cells harbour a great number of lipid particles, mitochondria are diminishing and their cristae partly disappear, indicating a decreased respiration capacity. After 350–500 days the volume of most cells is increased many times and the cells are filled with large oval bodies of electrondense material. Chloramphenicol protects immobilized cultures against bacterial contamination.     

Invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus has sex‐dependent locomotor activity and is under‐represented in catches from passive fishing gear compared with seine catches

The higher proportion of males of the invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus in samples from two activity selective passive fishing gears compared with one activity non‐selective fishing gear in three Dutch lakes is related to higher male locomotory activity and is a sex‐dependent trait. This difference in activity reflects the different ecology of male and female N. melanostomus.     

Coupling Among Energy Failure, Loss of Ion Homeostasis, and Phospholipase A2 and C Activation During Ischemia

Abstract— The objective of the present experiments was to correlate changes in cellular energy metabolism, dissipative ion fluxes, and lipolysis during the first 90 s of ischemia and, hence, to establish whether phospholipase A₂or phospholipase C is responsible for the early accumulation of phospholipid hydrolysis products. Ischemia was induced for 15–90 s in rats, extracellular K⁺ (K⁺_e) was recorded, and neocortex was frozen in situ for measurements of labile tissue metabolites, free fatty acids, and diacylglycerides. Ischemia of 15-and 30-s duration gave rise to a decrease in phosphocreatine concentration and a decline in the ATP/free ADP ratio. Although these changes were accompanied by an activation of K⁺ conductances, there were no changes in free fatty acids until after 60s, when free arachidonic acid accumulated. An increase in other free fatty acids and in total diacylglyceride content did not occur until after anoxic depolarization. The results demonstrate that the early functional changes, such as activation of K⁺ conductances, are unrelated to changes in lipids or lipid mediators. They furthermore suggest that the initial lipolysis occurs via both phospholipase A₂ and phospholipase C, which are activated when membrane depolarization leads to influx of calcium into cells.     

Structure and dynamics of the N-terminal loop of PsbQ from photosystem II of Spinacia oleracea

Infrared and Raman spectroscopy were applied to identify restraints for the structure determination of the 20 amino acid loop between two beta-sheets of the N-terminal region of the PsbQ protein of the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II from Spinacia oleracea by restraint-based homology modeling. One of the initial models has shown a stable fold of the loop in a 20 ns molecular dynamics simulation that is in accordance with spectroscopic data. Cleavage of the first 12 amino acids leads to a permanent drift in the root means square deviation of the protein backbone and induces major structural changes.     

Olfactory Performance Is Predicted by Individual Sex-Atypicality,but Not Sexual Orientation

Many previous studies have reported robust sex differences in olfactory perception. However, both men and women can be expected to vary in the degree to which they exhibit olfactory performance considered typical of their own or the opposite sex. Sex-atypicality is often described in terms of childhood gender nonconformity, which, however, is not a perfect correlate of non-heterosexual orientation. Here we explored intrasexual variability in psychophysical olfactory performance in a sample of 156 individuals (83 non-heterosexual) and found the lowest odor identification scores in heterosexual men. However, when childhood gender nonconformity was entered in the model along with sexual orientation, better odor identification scores were exhibited by gender-nonconforming men, and greater olfactory sensitivity by gender-conforming women, irrespective of their sexual orientation. Thus, sex-atypicality, but not sexual orientation predicts olfactory performance, and we propose that this might not be limited to olfaction, but represent a more general phenomenon.     

Extracellular phosphatase activity of natural plankton studied with ELF97 phosphate: fluorescence quantification and labelling kinetics

ELF(R)97 phosphate (ELFP) is a phosphatase substrate which produces ELF(R)97 alcohol (ELFA), a fluorescent water-insoluble product, upon hydrolysis. We studied the kinetics of ELFA precipitation in freshwater samples at levels of total plankton and single phytoplankton cells, and tested the suitability of ELFP for measurement of surface-bound algal extracellular phosphatases. Samples from acidic Plesné Lake (pH approximately 5; high phosphatase activity) and eutrophic Rímov reservoir (pH approximately 7-10; moderate phosphatase activity) were incubated with ELFP for 5-300 min, fixed with HgCl2 and filtered through polycarbonate filters. Relative fluorescence of filter-retained ELFA precipitates was quantified with image analysis. Time-courses of ELFA formation exhibited lag periods followed by finite periods of linear increase. In Plesné Lake, lag-times were shorter (1-18 min) and rates of increase in ELFA fluorescence higher (by approximately 2 orders of magnitude) than in Rímov reservoir (lag-times 30-200 min). Similar patterns of ELFA formation kinetics were also observed in Plesné Lake samples in cuvette spectrofluorometer measurements (which failed in Rímov reservoir). Linear regression of seasonal data on rates of increase in ELFA fluorescence from image cytometry and spectrofluorometry (r2 = 0.65, n = 10) allowed for calibration of image cytometry in terms of amount of cell-associated ELFA. Preliminary measurements of extracellular phosphatase activities of several algae resulted in rates (10-2260 fmol cell-1 h-1) which are comparable to data reported in the literature for algal cultures.
