The strength of the H-Y antigen on thymus cells and on skin was compared in differentH-2-congenic mouse strains using a host-versus-graft reaction popliteal lymph node assay, and skin grafts from males of parental strains grafted to F1 hybrid females. The results revealed considerable differences in the strength of the H-Y antigen among different congenic strains; these differences demonstrate the effect of theH-2-linked gene on the expression of the H-Y antigen. The linkage withH-2 was also confirmed in tests with segregating F2 generations. In the strains bearing recombinantH-2 haplotypes, the strength of the H-Y antigen is similar to that of parental strain from which the recombinant received itsK end, and the responsible gene (or genes) map to the left ofI-C. The effect of theH-2-linked gene(s) on thymus cells and skin is different. The gene linked to theK end ofH- 2b determines a strong H-Y antigen on thymus cells, but a relatively weak H-Y antigen on skin. The gene linked to theK end ofH- 2k determines a weak H-Y antigen on thymus cells, but a strong H-Y antigen on skin. The gene linked to theK end ofH- 2d determines a weak H-Y antigen on both thymus cells and skin. Our observations raise the possibility that the structural gene for the H-Y antigen is linked toH-2. Alternative (but not exclusive) explanations invoke regulatory effects ofH-2 on the expression of the H-Y antigen, possibly by means of the control of the cellular andogen receptors. 相似文献

Premise of the Study
The pygmy forest, a plant community of severely stunted conifers and ericaceous angiosperms, occurs on patches of highly acidic, nutrient‐poor soils along the coast of Northern California, USA. This system is an excellent opportunity to study the effect of severe nutrient deficiency on leaf physiology in a naturally‐occurring ecosystem. In this study, we seek to understand the physiological mechanisms stunting the plants' growth and their implications for whole plant function.Methods
We measured 14 traits pertaining to leaf photosynthetic function or physical structure on seven species. Samples were taken from the pygmy forest community and from conspecifics growing on higher‐nutrient soils, where trees may grow over 30 m tall.Key Results
Pygmy plants of most species maintained similar area‐based photosynthetic and stomatal conductance rates to conspecific controls, but had lower specific leaf area (leaf area divided by dry weight), lower percent nitrogen, and less leaf area relative to xylem growth. Sequoia sempervirens, a species rare in the pygmy forest, had a categorically different response from the more common plants and had remarkably low photosynthetic rates.Conclusions
Pygmy plants were not stunted by low photosynthetic rates on a leaf‐area basis; instead, several species had restricted whole‐plant photosynthesis due to low leaf area production. Pygmy plants of all species showed signs of greater carbon investment in their leaves and higher production of nonphotosynthetic leaf tissue, further contributing to slow growth rates. 相似文献23.

Enzymes from cold-adapted species are significantly more active at low temperatures, even those close to zero Celsius, but
the rationale of this adaptation is complex and relatively poorly understood. It is commonly stated that there is a relationship
between the flexibility of an enzyme and its catalytic activity at low temperature. This paper gives the results of a study
using molecular dynamics simulations performed for five pairs of enzymes, each pair comprising a cold-active enzyme plus its
mesophilic or thermophilic counterpart. The enzyme pairs included α-amylase, citrate synthase, malate dehydrogenase, alkaline
protease and xylanase. Numerous sites with elevated flexibility were observed in all enzymes; however, differences in flexibilities
were not striking. Nevertheless, amino acid residues common in both enzymes of a pair (not present in insertions of a structure
alignment) are generally more flexible in the cold-active enzymes. The further application of principle component analysis
to the protein dynamics revealed that there are differences in the rate and/or extent of opening and closing of the active
sites. The results indicate that protein dynamics play an important role in catalytic processes where structural rearrangements,
such as those required for active site access by substrate, are involved. They also support the notion that cold adaptation
may have evolved by selective changes in regions of enzyme structure rather than in global change to the whole protein.

Surgery may be regarded as an angiogenesis-inducing condition since it evokes the release of many angiogenic factors. Regarding the mechanistic overlap between tumor-associated neovascularisation and (physiological) angiogenesis in response to injury and hypoxia, surgery may promote the uncontrolled growth of residual dormant tumor cells. With the advent of anti-angiogenic agents, surgeons will be faced with more patients undergoing surgery for primary and secondary tumors under anti-angiogenic treatment. This could present problems with regard to angiogenesis-dependent phenomena such as wound repair, healing of intestinal anastomoses and liver regeneration. Values of the water saturation deficit (WSD) for hydroactive stomatal movements of kale leaves were estimated using the method of transpiration curve analysis. Stomata of young leaves started closing at WSD values of 5 to 6 per cent and were completely closed at 18 to 20 per cent WSD. During maturation and ageing of leaves these WSD values increased to 12.5 and 18 to 23 per cent respectively. Thus the stomatal reaction is more sensitive to changes in WSD in adult leaves than in young ones. After maturation is attained both values decrease. In apparently withering leaves the individual phases of transpiration curves can barely be distinguished, probably for the reason that even under optimal conditions their stomata remain half-closed and at high WSD values an incomplete closing of the aperture occurs. The injured cuticle of withering leaves affects the shape of the transpiration curve as well. 相似文献

Background
Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by protozoan parasites of genus Leishmania. The frequent involvement of Leishmania tropica in human leishmaniasis has been recognized only recently. Similarly as L. major, L. tropica causes cutaneous leishmaniasis in humans, but can also visceralize and cause systemic illness. The relationship between the host genotype and disease manifestations is poorly understood because there were no suitable animal models.Methods
We studied susceptibility to L. tropica, using BALB/c-c-STS/A (CcS/Dem) recombinant congenic (RC) strains, which differ greatly in susceptibility to L. major. Mice were infected with L. tropica and skin lesions, cytokine and chemokine levels in serum, and parasite numbers in organs were measured.Principal Findings
Females of BALB/c and several RC strains developed skin lesions. In some strains parasites visceralized and were detected in spleen and liver. Importantly, the strain distribution pattern of symptoms caused by L. tropica was different from that observed after L. major infection. Moreover, sex differently influenced infection with L. tropica and L. major. L. major-infected males exhibited either higher or similar skin pathology as females, whereas L. tropica-infected females were more susceptible than males. The majority of L. tropica-infected strains exhibited increased levels of chemokines CCL2, CCL3 and CCL5. CcS-16 females, which developed the largest lesions, exhibited a unique systemic chemokine reaction, characterized by additional transient early peaks of CCL3 and CCL5, which were not present in CcS-16 males nor in any other strain.Conclusion
Comparison of L. tropica and L. major infections indicates that the strain patterns of response are species-specific, with different sex effects and largely different host susceptibility genes. 相似文献28.

Transkarbam 12 (T12), the carbamic acid salt of omega-aminocaproic acid dodecyl ester, is a recently synthesized substance, whose high permeation enhancing activity through the human skin was found for certain drugs. In this work, the thermotropic phase behaviour of T12 has been studied by means of various techniques, namely, DSC, FTIR and FT-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and DRS. The temperature development of the X-ray reflections as well as of the conformationally sensitive Raman bands and the IR bands have been observed. At room temperature, the hydrocarbon chains of T12 exhibit a highly ordered structure, arranged in an orthorhombic perpendicular subcell. On heating, two transitions occur at 54 and at 66 degrees C. The first transition is related to the disruption of the carbamate structure and changes in the polar head group. The other transition represents the melting of hydrocarbon chains and the subsequent release of carbon dioxide. The time required for the rebinding of carbon dioxide and the reformation of the carbamate structure is dependent upon numerous factors and it was not possible to precisely determine the length of this process. 相似文献

The study focuses on geographical patterns of genetic variation at allozyme loci common for four main tree species of Central Europe (Norway spruce, silver fir, common beech and sessile oak). Moving-window averaging of four indicators of allelic richness and diversity (proportion of polymorphic loci, mean number of alleles per locus, effective number of alleles and expected heterozygosity) with window size of 50 × 50 km was used to identify the patterns. Moreover, local genetic divergence was assessed using the G ST (Nei, Molecular population genetic and evolution, Amsterdam and Oxford, North-Holland, 1975) and D j (Gregorius and Roberds, Theor Appl Genet 71:826–834, 1986) statistics for common beech and silver fir, where raw genotype data were available. Spatial patterns of diversity and allelic richness were quite similar. Romanian Carpathians were identified as the most important hotspot of genetic diversity and evolutionary divergence in Central Europe. Implications for genetic conservation are briefly discussed. 相似文献
