Parasites have the potential to severely reduce host reproductive success. However, the effects of endoparasites on reproductive success have not received the same amount of attention as the effects of parasites on host survival. We investigated the relationship between an avian endoparasite (gapeworm, Syngamus trachea) and both current and future reproductive success of female house sparrows (Passer domesticus) in a population on the coast of Helgeland, northern Norway. We found that the proportion of eggs in a nest that failed to develop into fledglings increased as the faecal parasitic egg count of the mothers increased. We also found that juvenile females with high numbers of parasitic eggs in their faeces had lower lifetime reproductive success as adults. However, we did not find a relationship between maternal parasite infection and clutch size or recruitment rate of offspring. To our knowledge this is the first study to find a relationship between reproductive success of an avian host and faecal egg count of an endoparasite. The present study indicates that infection by an endoparasite may be associated with lower individual reproductive success in both the short-term and long-term in a wild population of hosts.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to evaluate if pectin-like polysaccharides, collectively known as sphagnan, extracted by acid hydrolysis from the leaves of Sphagnum moss have a unique ability to react with phenylhydrazine, o-phenylenediamine or collagen. A previous assay for determination of carbonyl groups in sphagnan by reaction with phenylhydrazine was disproved due to spectrophotometric interference from furans. The actual carbonyl content of sphagnan is estimated to be much less than previously thought. NMR spectroscopy showed that small amounts of o-phenylenediamine and/or its oxidation products bind to sphagnan probably via imine formation, but evidence of quinoxaline formation was inconclusive. Sphagnan–gelatin mixtures formed complex coacervates at pH 2.0–4.8 at low ionic strength, which is typical of electrostatic polyelectrolyte interactions, rather than covalent carbonyl-amine reactions. Measurements of hydrothermal stability and collagenase-degradation of sphagnan-treated hide powder collagen suggest that sphagnan is a poor tanning agent. The results indicate the suggested preservative properties of sphagnan are not related to tanning.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted in winter of 1997/1998 in the Skagerrak off southern Norway to collect data on the influence of sedimentation and resuspension on the transport of organic contaminants. Data from the water column and sediments, as well as on sedimentation and current regime near the sea floor, indicated that the deposition of contaminants is a continual process. Deposition is subject not only to seasonal biological processes such as growth and sedimentation of the spring phytoplankton bloom, but also to hydrographic events such as surges in near-bottom currents causing sediment resuspension. Contaminants at the sea floor may be transported considerable distances. It is suggested that in simplest terms, this transport can be envisaged as a conveyor belt skipping along the seabed. The dominant iterative processes regulating this near-bottom transport are sedimentation, resuspension and advection. In this way, particles and associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as other hydrophobic contaminants, may be transported over hundreds of kilometers.  相似文献

The initial hydrolysis and acidogenesis of L. hyperborea fronds wereinvestigated in anaerobic batch fermentations. The main product in theacidogenesis of fronds and fronds added extra substrates was acetate.Addition of extra glucose led to a diauxic development with glucose as thepreferred substrate and delayed initiation of alginate lyase activity. Additionof extra mannitol did not affect the initiation of lyase activity, butmaximum activity was reduced. Addition of products such as acetate andpropionate also resulted in a delayed lyase activity. The fermentation ofpure fronds resulted in a high acetate/CO2 ratio, suggesting that thehomoacetogenic pathway played an important role in the degradation ofuronic acids. Addition of mannitol or glucose resulted in a much loweracetate/CO2 ratio and an initial decrease in soluble CODconcentration, probably caused by biomass growth and possibly someH2 production. Thus, the seasonal changes of mannitol and laminaranin L. hyperborea fronds will result in different digestion characteristicsfor this algae throughout the year.  相似文献

An important issue concerning the introduction of non-indigenous organisms into local populations is the potential of the introduced individuals to spread and interfere both demographically and genetically with the local population. Accordingly, the potential of spatial dispersal among introduced individuals compared with local individuals is a key parameter to understand the spatial and temporal dynamics of populations after an introduction event. In addition, if the variance in dispersal rate and distance is linked to individual characteristics, this may further affect the population dynamics. We conducted a large-scale experiment where we introduced 123 house sparrows from a distant population into 18 local populations without changing population density or sex ratio. Introduced individuals dispersed more frequently and over longer distances than residents. Furthermore, females had higher probability of dispersal than males. In females, there was also a positive relationship between the wing length and the probability of dispersal and dispersal distance. These results suggest that the distribution and frequency of introduced individuals may be predicted by their sex ratio as well as their phenotypic characteristics.  相似文献

The question of whether natural selection favors genetic stability or genetic variability is a fundamental problem in evolutionary biology. Bioinformatic analyses demonstrate that selection favors genetic stability by avoiding unstable nucleotide sequences in protein encoding DNA. Yet, such unstable sequences are maintained in several DNA repair genes, thereby promoting breakdown of repair and destabilizing the genome. Several studies have therefore argued that selection favors genetic variability at the expense of stability. Here we propose a new evolutionary mechanism, with supporting bioinformatic evidence, that resolves this paradox. Combining the concepts of gene-dependent mutation biases and meiotic recombination, we argue that unstable sequences in the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes are maintained by their own phenotype. In particular, we predict that human MMR maintains an overrepresentation of mononucleotide repeats (monorepeats) within and around the MMR genes. In support of this hypothesis, we report a 31% excess in monorepeats in 250 kb regions surrounding the seven MMR genes compared to all other RefSeq genes (1.75 vs. 1.34%, P = 0.0047), with a particularly high content in PMS2 (2.41%, P = 0.0047) and MSH6 (2.07%, P = 0.043). Based on a mathematical model of monorepeat frequency, we argue that the proposed mechanism may suffice to explain the observed excess of repeats around MMR genes. Our findings thus indicate that unstable sequences in MMR genes are maintained through evolution by the MMR mechanism. The evolutionary paradox of genetically unstable DNA repair genes may thus be explained by an equilibrium in which the phenotype acts back on its own genotype.  相似文献

Domesticated species frequently spread their genes into populations of wild relatives through interbreeding. The domestication process often involves artificial selection for economically desirable traits. This can lead to an indirect response in unknown correlated traits and a reduction in fitness of domesticated individuals in the wild. Previous models for the effect of gene flow from domesticated species to wild relatives have assumed that evolution occurs in one dimension. Here, I develop a quantitative genetic model for the balance between migration and multivariate stabilizing selection. Different forms of correlational selection consistent with a given observed ratio between average fitness of domesticated and wild individuals offsets the phenotypic means at migration–selection balance away from predictions based on simpler one-dimensional models. For almost all parameter values, correlational selection leads to a reduction in the migration load. For ridge selection, this reduction arises because the distance the immigrants deviates from the local optimum in effect is reduced. For realistic parameter values, however, the effect of correlational selection on the load is small, suggesting that simpler one-dimensional models may still be adequate in terms of predicting mean population fitness and viability.  相似文献

Seedlings of five mountain birch populations (Betula pubescens Ehrh. ssp. czerepanovii) from Fennoscandia and Iceland were raised and grown at natural daylengths at Tromsø, Norway (69°N) and different temperatures during late summer and fall season, followed by winter temperature treatment at ambient and +4 °C above ambient temperatures at Bergen, Norway (60°N). The experiment took place during two seasons (2000/01 and 2001/02). The following summer shoot and biomass growth were reduced as a result of winter warming and subsequent premature dehardening in early flushing provenances and treatments. Biomass increased in plants grown at low hardening temperature when compared with high temperature treatment. As a conclusion, increased winter temperatures would tend to increase the risk of spring frost damage and reduce growth in birch seedlings, because the differences between the frost hardening and ambient temperatures are decreasing, and because the time from budbreak to dehardening is shortened. The results are discussed in relation to simultaneous experiments with frost hardiness in the same populations and treatments.  相似文献

Piscirickettsia salmonis, a serious bacterial pathogen of farmed marine fish, previously considered culturable only in eukaryotic cell-culture systems, was grown for the first time on agar and broth containing enhanced levels of cysteine, thus greatly increasing the potential for isolation, in vitro culture and study of this organism. Virulence towards Atlantic salmon following passage on agar media was retained in a controlled laboratory trial. Of the studied temperatures, optimal growth on agar was observed at 22 degrees C.  相似文献
