More detailed knowledge of the density of organic carbon in soils of boreal forests is needed for accurate estimates of the size of this C stock. We investigated the effect of vegetation type and associated site fertility on the C density at 30 mature coniferous forest sites in southern Finland and evaluated the importance of deep layers to the total C store in the soil by extending the sampling at eight of the sites to the depth of ground water level (2.4–4.6 m). The C density in the organic horizon plus 1 m thick mineral soil layer ranged from 4.0 kg/m2 to 11.9 kg/m2, and, on the average, increased towards the more productive vegetation types. Between the depth of 1 m and the ground water level the C density averaged 1.3–2.4 kg/m2 at the studied vegetation types and these layers represented 18–28% of the total stock of C in the soil. The results emphasize the importance of also considering these deep layers to correctly estimate the total amount of C in these soils. At the least fertile sites the soil contained about 30% more C than phytomass, whereas at the more fertile sites the amount of C in soil was about 10% less than the amount bound in vegetation.  相似文献

To assist in evaluating serological test results from dead animals, 10 silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and 10 blue foxes (Alopex lagopus), 6 of each species previously vaccinated against and all challenged with Microsporum canis, were blood sampled and euthanased. Fox carcasses were stored at +10°C, and autopsy was performed on Days 0, 2, 4, 7, and 11 post mortem during which samples from blood and/or body fluid from the thoracic cavity were collected. Antibodies against M. canis were measured in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as absorbance values (optical density; OD). To assess the degradation of antibodies, the ratio between post mortem and ante mortem absorbance was calculated. The mean absorbance from samples collected during autopsy was generally lower than from samples from live animals. In blood samples, this difference increased significantly with time (P = 0.04), while in body fluid samples the difference decreased (not significant; P = 0.18). We suggest that a positive serological result from testing blood or body fluid of a dead animal may be regarded as valuable, although specific prevalences obtained by screening populations based on this type of material may represent an under-estimation of the true antibody prevalence. Negative serological test results based on material from carcasses may be less conclusive, taken into account the general degradation processes in decaying carcasses, also involving immunoglobulin proteins.  相似文献

Tree functional traits together with processes such as forest regeneration, growth, and mortality affect forest and tree structure. Forest management inherently impacts these processes. Moreover, forest structure, biodiversity, resilience, and carbon uptake can be sustained and enhanced with forest management activities. To assess structural complexity of individual trees, comprehensive and quantitative measures are needed, and they are often lacking for current forest management practices. Here, we utilized 3D information from individual Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees obtained with terrestrial laser scanning to, first, assess effects of forest management on structural complexity of individual trees and, second, understand relationship between several tree attributes and structural complexity. We studied structural complexity of individual trees represented by a single scale‐independent metric called “box dimension.” This study aimed at identifying drivers affecting structural complexity of individual Scots pine trees in boreal forest conditions. The results showed that thinning increased structural complexity of individual Scots pine trees. Furthermore, we found a relationship between structural complexity and stem and crown size and shape as well as tree growth. Thus, it can be concluded that forest management affected structural complexity of individual Scots pine trees in managed boreal forests, and stem, crown, and growth attributes were identified as drivers of it.  相似文献

Vegetation, temperature and hydrology are major factors controlling wetland methane (CH4) dynamics. In order to test their importance, we measured CH4 emissions and environmental characteristics over 2 years from five mires representing a successional sequence, ranging in age from 178 to 2,520 years. We hypothesized CH4 emissions to be higher from the sedge-dominated fens than from the older bog stage. The more constant hydrological conditions at later successional stages as a consequence of the thicker peat layer appeared to result in lower temporal variation in CH4 emissions. Accordingly, the other controls, temperature and vegetation, had an effect on CH4 emissions only when the water table was sufficiently high. The seasonal variation in CH4 emissions was controlled by temperature only at the oldest study site, which had the lowest variation in water table. Within-season variation in emissions related to plant phenology was highest at the fen stage, which was dominated by aerenchymatous plants with a strong seasonal pattern, namely sedges and forbs. In contrast to our hypothesis, CH4 emissions increased with mire age towards the bog stage. However, the trend did not emerge during a rainy growing season, due to a rise in CH4 emissions at the younger stages. The results may imply two different mechanisms during mire succession: while old mires are able to avoid the perturbation associated with variation in the water table and maintain their function as CH4 emitters, young mires are exposed to perturbation but are able to recover their function.  相似文献

The European sturgeon, Acipenser sturio, experienced a dramatic decline during the late 19th century in Germany. Only after its confirmed extirpation in the wild were ex‐situ measures introduced as the basis of a recovery attempt. In order to achieve effective population restoration, it is important to evaluate and compare efficiency of both planned and ongoing remediation measures. For this purpose, a stochastic age‐structured model of this population was developed to conduct a population viability analysis and to assess different management and restoration measures. The model revealed a high susceptibility of the species to even very low fishery and by‐catch pressures of below 5%. Population recovery was shown to be a very slow process, with a minimum timeframe of 30–50 years. Continuous stocking represents an important initial management measure to accelerate population recovery, reducing by two to three times the time required in comparison to only initial stocking. Habitat remediation (e.g. spawning grounds) in the Elbe River seems necessary, as according to model estimations, the present carrying capacity could sustain no more than a few thousand adults. The model showed a clear correlation between spawning habitat availability and the sustained number of adults.  相似文献
