The tropical dry forests of NW Peru are heavily shaped by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), where especially El Niño brings rain to arid to semi-arid areas. However, the resulting effects on biodiversity patterns remain largely unknown as well as the effect of environmental variables on the floristic composition under varying rainfall patterns. Therefore, we studied the spatio-temporal effects of different ENSO episodes on floristic biodiversity along a climatic gradient ranging from the coastal desert to the Andean foothills. We sampled 50 vegetation plots in four years representing different ENSO episodes. To highlight the spatio-temporal changes in floristic composition and beta diversity across ENSO episodes, we predicted ordination scores with a Generalized Additive Model. We applied variation partitioning to test if topographic or edaphic variables gained in importance during more humid ENSO episodes. Additionally, we executed an irrigation–fertilization experiment to quantify the beneficial effects of the water–nutrient interaction under different simulated ENSO rainfall scenarios. Plant species richness increased under humid conditions during the humid La Niña (2012) and the moderate El Niño (2016), and slightly decreased under the very humid conditions during the coastal El Niño (2017). The spatial prediction revealed that specific vegetation formations became more pronounced with increasing water input, but that a large water surplus led to the disruption of the strict order along the climatic gradient. Edaphic and topographic variables gained in importance with increased water availability (2012 and 2016), however, this effect was not further amplified under very wet conditions (2017). The experiment showed that plant cover under Super Niño conditions was three times higher when fertilized. Overall, our spatial predictions concede detailed insights into spatio-temporal ecosystem dynamics in response to varying rainfall caused by different ENSO episodes while the results of the experiment can support farmers regarding a sustainable agrarian management.  相似文献

Brooding behavior and the brooded young of Ophioderma wahlbergii, a common, large, shallow‐water brittle star from South Africa, are described for the first time. Monthly samples of 20 specimens were collected from June 2013 to May 2014 (n=240 in total). The species was shown to be gonochoric. Females reached maturity at 17 mm disc diameter (dd), and their ovaries contained 5±3 yolky eggs of mean diameter 0.25±0.1 mm. No seasonal trends in reproduction were found, and >50% of females examined in each month were brooding. Brooding individuals contained an average of 7±6 and up to 33 developing young. Small stages were more frequent than larger young, suggesting that juveniles either emerge at different sizes, or more likely suffer mortality during development. Young within individual adults were of different clutches, but those within individual bursae were all of the same stage. No signs of larval stages were found, indicating that development is direct. Given the large size of emerging juveniles, the species is likely to be matrotrophic and hence truly viviparous. Brooding is a recent discovery in Ophioderma and, so far, the only known brooder has about 1000 small embryos. This study shows quite a different reproductive strategy within the genus, with few, large eggs developing into the largest brooded young known from any species of ophiuroid.  相似文献

Understanding the vulnerability of tree species to anthropogenic threats is important for the efficient planning of restoration and conservation efforts. We quantified and compared the effects of future climate change and four current threats (fire, habitat conversion, overgrazing and overexploitation) on the 50 most common tree species of the tropical dry forests of northwestern Peru and southern Ecuador. We used an ensemble modelling approach to predict species distribution ranges, employed freely accessible spatial datasets to map threat exposures, and developed a trait‐based scoring approach to estimate species‐specific sensitivities, using differentiated trait weights in accordance with their expected importance in determining species sensitivities to specific threats. Species‐specific vulnerability maps were constructed from the product of the exposure maps and the sensitivity estimates. We found that all 50 species face considerable threats, with an average of 46% of species’ distribution ranges displaying high or very high vulnerability to at least one of the five threats. Our results suggest that current levels of habitat conversion, overexploitation and overgrazing pose larger threats to most of the studied species than climate change. We present a spatially explicit planning strategy for species‐specific restoration and conservation actions, proposing management interventions to focus on (a) in situ conservation of tree populations and seed collection for tree planting activities in areas with low vulnerability to climate change and current threats; (b) ex situ conservation or translocation of populations in areas with high climate change vulnerability; and (c) active planting or assisted regeneration in areas under high current threat vulnerability but low climate change vulnerability, provided that interventions are in place to lower threat pressure. We provide an online, user‐friendly tool to visualize both the vulnerability maps and the maps indicating priority restoration and conservation actions.  相似文献

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of quality improvement collaboratives in improving the quality of care.Data sources Relevant studies through Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Cochrane databases.Study selection Two reviewers independently extracted data on topics, participants, setting, study design, and outcomes.Data synthesis Of 1104 articles identified, 72 were included in the study. Twelve reports representing nine studies (including two randomised controlled trials) used a controlled design to measure the effects of the quality improvement collaborative intervention on care processes or outcomes of care. Systematic review of these nine studies showed moderate positive results. Seven studies (including one randomised controlled trial) reported an effect on some of the selected outcome measures. Two studies (including one randomised controlled trial) did not show any significant effect.Conclusions The evidence underlying quality improvement collaboratives is positive but limited and the effects cannot be predicted with great certainty. Considering that quality improvement collaboratives seem to play a key part in current strategies focused on accelerating improvement, but may have only modest effects on outcomes at best, further knowledge of the basic components effectiveness, cost effectiveness, and success factors is crucial to determine the value of quality improvement collaboratives.  相似文献

Part of a ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) cistron of Haemophilus ducreyi was enzymically amplified using conserved primers within the rRNA molecules, cloned in a plasmid vector, and sequenced. From the nucleotide sequence, eight oligonucleotides complementary to different regions in the 16S and 23S rRNA molecules were selected, chemically synthesized, and used as hybridization probes. Hybridization experiments with at least 41 H. ducreyi strains and 13 or 14 non-H. ducreyi strains revealed that all eight oligonucleotide probes were highly reliable and completely specific for H. ducreyi strains. Comparisons of 16S rRNA sequences confirm that H. ducreyi is a member of the Pasteurellaceae though not closely related to other species in this family.  相似文献

Unidentified Listeria -like bacteria, which lack only one of the phenotypic characteristics used to confirm Listeria spp., were isolated from cheese during routine analysis for Listeria monocytogenes . The VIDAS Listeria assay and the Listeria specific PCR or DNA probe assays used did not identify these strains as Listeria species. This group of bacteria was studied for its homogeneity using rep-PCR and PFGE. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed a homology of 94% to established Listeria spp., implicating a closer relationship than that between Listeria spp. and Brochothrix spp.  相似文献
