The spatial structure of communities has recently gained much attention in ecology. Spatial structure comprises an important element in communities, but the literature lacks a thorough investigation about possible among‐organism or among‐ecosystem differences in the degree of spatial structure. Here, I conducted a quantitative review to determine if the degree of spatial structure varied predictably between the major organism types and ecosystems. Spatial structure was quantified as the relative fraction of community variation explained purely by spatial variables (fraction S/E). I integrated data from 322 variation partition analyses both in a generalized linear model (GLM) and using a boosted regression tree method, and showed that a mean of 11.0% of the variation in community composition was explained purely by spatial variables. Across all taxa, a body size–S/E relationship was positive. In GLM, fraction S/E increased highly significantly with study extent, it was highest among terrestrial taxa and higher in ectotherms than in homoiotherms. Spatial structure was also higher in omnivores than in autotrophs. These results suggest that the degree of spatial structure is jointly driven by extrinsic factors such as study extent and ecosystem type, and intrinsic factors such as body size, thermoregulation and interactions between body size and dispersal mode. These results should be important not only for basic research, but also conservation and bioassessment programs would benefit from the information about the magnitude of spatial variation in nature. Synthesis Spatial processes comprise an important element in most ecological communities, but the degree to which spatial structure varies across organisms or ecosystems is poorly known. Here, a quantitative review of 322 variation partition analyses indicated that spatial component varied predictably across ecological communities – it was driven by study extent and ecosystem type as well as by species traits such as body size and thermoregulation. These results give deep insights into the magnitude of spatial variation in nature and should be highly beneficial for conservation and bioassessment programs that are built on the information about how communities vary in space.  相似文献

The accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations is a suspected driver of aging and age‐related diseases, but forestalling these changes has been a major challenge. One of the best‐studied models is the prematurely aging mtDNA mutator mouse, which carries a homozygous knock‐in of a proofreading deficient version of the catalytic subunit of mtDNA polymerase‐γ (PolgA). We investigated how voluntary exercise affects the progression of aging phenotypes in this mouse, focusing on mitochondrial and protein homeostasis in both brain and peripheral tissues. Voluntary exercise significantly ameliorated several aspects of the premature aging phenotype, including decreased locomotor activity, alopecia, and kyphosis, but did not have major effects on the decreased lifespan of mtDNA mutator mice. Exercise also decreased the mtDNA mutation load. In‐depth tissue proteomics revealed that exercise normalized the levels of about half the proteins, with the majority involved in mitochondrial function and nuclear–mitochondrial crosstalk. There was also a specific increase in the nuclear‐encoded proteins needed for the tricarboxylic acid cycle and complex II, but not in mitochondrial‐encoded oxidative phosphorylation proteins, as well as normalization of enzymes involved in coenzyme Q biosynthesis. Furthermore, we found tissue‐specific alterations, with brain coping better as compared to muscle and with motor cortex being better protected than striatum, in response to mitochondrial dysfunction. We conclude that voluntary exercise counteracts aging in mtDNA mutator mice by counteracting protein dysregulation in muscle and brain, decreasing the mtDNA mutation burden in muscle, and delaying overt aging phenotypes.  相似文献

A minimum of 20 porbeagles Lamna nasus were observed circling the Alba oil platform (UK North Sea) over several days in July 2014. Although schools of fish often aggregate around oil platforms, less is known about their ability to aggregate pelagic sharks and L. nasus are rarely seen at the surface. This unusual observation provides new insights into L. nasus behaviour and habitat use and the potential role of offshore artificial structures on pelagic predators.  相似文献

The least weaselMustela nivalis nivalis Linnaeus, 1766 is unique among carnivores because of its small body size and capacity for fast reproduction. It has been suggested to be the main agent for maintaining cyclic fluctuations in northern vole populations, largely based on its high reproductive potential and dependence on small rodents. This study describes basic reproductive data on the least weasel obtained during a captive breeding program. In the experiments, food availability was manipulated at the onset of breeding. Altogether, 65 litters were born during the 5-year study. The mean litter size was 5.1 (in 53 litters of known litter size), the most common litter size being six. The sex ratio of weaned young was not biased from 1∶1. The median date of birth was June 4. Food manipulations did not affect mating frequency suggesting that the observation of failure in breeding in years of low abundance of small mammals is due to mortality of embryos or young before weaning, but not due to avoidance of breeding at low food availability. In this respect, weasels differ from other main vole predators, owls and raptors, which often skip breeding if small mammals are scarce.  相似文献

Anabolic hormones, mechanical loading, and the obese protein leptin play separate roles in maintaining bone mass. We have previously shown that leptin, as well as its receptor, are expressed by normal human osteoblasts. Consequently, we have investigated how leptin affects proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis of human osteoblasts. Iliac crest osteoblasts, incubated with either leptin (100 ng/ml), calcitriol (1,25(OH)(2)D(3); 10(-9) M) or 1-84 human parathyroid hormone (PTH; 10(-8) M), were cultured for 35 consecutive days and assayed for expression of various differentiation-related marker genes (as estimated by RT-PCR), de novo collagen synthesis, proliferation, in vitro mineralization, and osteoclast signaling. The effects of leptin on protection against retinoic acid (RA; 10(-7) M) induced apoptosis, as well as transition into preosteocytes, were also tested. Leptin exposure enhanced cell proliferation and collagen synthesis over both control condition and PTH exposure. Leptin inhibited in vitro calcified nodule production after 1-2 weeks in culture, however, subsequent to 4-5 weeks, leptin significantly stimulated mineralization. The mineralization profile throughout the entire incubation period was almost undistinguishable from the one induced by PTH. In comparison, 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) generally reduced proliferation and collagen production rates, whereas mineralization was markedly enhanced. Leptin exposure (at 2 and 5 weeks) significantly enhanced the expression of TGFbeta, IGF-I, collagen-Ialpha, ALP, and osteocalcin mRNA. Leptin also protected against RA-induced apoptosis, as estimated by soluble DNA fractions and DNA laddering patterns subsequent to 10 days of culture. The expression profiles of Bax-alpha and Bcl-2 mRNAs indicated that leptin per se significantly protected against apoptosis throughout the entire incubation period. Furthermore, the osteoblast marker OSF-2 was diminished, whereas the CD44 osteocyte marker gene expression was stimulated, indicating a transition into preosteocytes. In terms of osteoclastic signaling, leptin significantly augmented the mRNA levels of both interleukin-6 (IL-6) and osteoprotegerin (OPG). In summary, continuous leptin exposure of iliac crest osteoblasts, promotes collagen synthesis, cell differentiation and in vitro mineralization, as well as cell survival and transition into preosteocytes. Leptin may also facilitate osteoblastic signaling to the osteoclast.  相似文献

We recently generated a transgenic rat model for acute pancreatitis, which was apparently caused by a massive depletion of pancreatic polyamines spermidine and spermine due to inducible activation of their catabolism (Alhonen, L., Parkkinen, J. J., Kein?nen, T., Sinervirta, R., Herzig, K. H., and J?nne, J. (2000) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 97, 8290-8295). When subjected to partial hepatectomy, these animals showed striking activation of polyamine catabolism at 24 h postoperatively with a profound decrease in hepatic spermidine and spermine pools and failure to initiate liver regeneration. Here we show that pancreatitis in this model could be totally prevented, as judged by histopathology and plasma alpha-amylase activity, by administration of 1-methylspermidine, a metabolically stable analogue of spermidine. Similarly, the analogue, given prior to partial hepatectomy, restored early liver regeneration in the transgenic rats, as indicated by a dramatic increase in the number of proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive hepatocytes from about 1% to more than 40% in response to the drug. The present results suggest that the extremely high concentration of spermidine in the pancreas, in fact the highest in the mammalian body, may have a critical role in maintaining organ integrity. The failure to initiate liver regeneration in the absence of sufficient hepatic polyamine pools similarly indicates that polyamines are required for proper commencement of the regenerative process.  相似文献
