Frog call transmission in forestry monocultures: Are there drawbacks?

Anuran males emit advertisement calls for the purpose of attracting females and repelling conspecific males. Call transmission is influenced by the acoustics of the propagation environment, including vegetation. Thus, forestry monocultures of non-native trees represent artificial environments that could modify call transmission. These monocultures have substituted large areas of Atlantic Forest in southern Brazil, representing a conservation challenge. Considering this context, we hypothesized that anurans have calls that are less attenuated in their native environment than in forest plantations. To test it, we performed sound transmission experiments using calls of three anuran species native to southern Brazil: Boana bischoffi, B. leptolineata, and Hylodes meridionalis. We compared sound attenuation between the native forest and forestry monocultures (Eucalyptus sp. and Pinus sp. forests), and included distance from the sound source, air temperature, humidity, and vegetation density as cofactors in linear mixed models. Our results show that the advertisement calls of the two tree frogs (Boana) attenuate less in tree plantations than in native forests, while the third species shows either no differences or less attenuation in native forests. Our results can be understood according to differences in natural history and microhabitat use among the studied species. The two tree frog species vocalize perched from vegetation so their calls become better transmitted in forestry monocultures, which have fewer trees than the native forest. On the other hand, H. meridionalis calls from rocks on streams and the propagation is finely tuned to this peculiar microhabitat. Quality Assessment of Bee Pollen-Honey Mixtures Using Thin-Layer Chromatography in Combination with Chemometrics

The aim of this study is to develop a rapid, effect-directed screening method for quality assessment of bee pollen-honey mixtures. The comparative antioxidant potential and phenolic content of honey, bee pollen, and the bee pollen-honey mixtures, was performed using spectrophotometry. The total phenolic content and antioxidative activity of bee pollen-honey mixtures with 20 % bee pollen share were in the range 3.03–3.11 mg GAE/g, and 6.02–6.96 mmol TE/kg, respectively, while mixtures with 30 % bee pollen share contained 3.92–4.18 mg GAE/g, and 9.69–10.11 mmol TE/kg. Chromatographic fingerprint of bee pollen-honey mixtures was performed by high-performance thin-layer chromatography with conditions developed by authors and reported for the first time. Fingerprint analysis hyphenated with chemometrics enabled authenticity assessments of honey in mixtures. Results indicate that bee pollen-honey mixtures represent a food with highly, both, nutritious characteristics and health-promoting effect.     

Poly(amidoamine) dendrimer peripherally modified with 4-N,N-dimethylaminoethyleneamino-1,8-naphthalimide as a sensor of metal cations and protons.

A new poly(amidoamine) dendrimer from second generation whose periphery comprises sixteen fluorescent 4-N,N-dimethylaminoethylamino-1,8-naphthalimide units has been synthesized and characterized. In DMF, the dendrimer shows sensitivity to the presence of Cu(2+), Fe(3+) and protons. The changes in the fluorescence intensity of the material are in opposite directions if acids or metals are present. Fluorescence enhancements (FE from 5 to 9 depending on solvent) are recorded when the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) originating from the donating amine to the electron accepting naphthalimide is inhibited by the protonation of the N,N-dimethylamino groups. In the case of Cu(2+) cations, a fluorescence quenching (FQ of 6) is first observed, followed by fluorescence partial restoration. In the Fe(3+) case, the same behaviour is observed with a final FE of 2. The successive complexations of these cations by the dendrimer core and by the external rim of the dendrimer may explain the results.     

Regeneration of Picea omorika plants via organogenesis

Picea omorika plants were regenerated from embryo and seedling shoot tip cultures. Adventitious and axillary shoots were produced on 1/2 MS medium containing benzyladenine and kinetin. Benzyladenine was more effective in bud induction, whereas kinetin hastened shoot development. Genetic transformation of alfalfa somatic embryos and their clonal propagation through repetitive somatic embryogenesis

Genetically transformed alfalfa (Medicago sativa L., cv. Zajearska 83) plantlets were obtained by inoculating somatic embryos with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains A281/pGA472 and LBA4404/pBI121. Single somatic embryos, 5–7 mm long, were released from a repetitively embryogenic culture, wounded, and cocultivated with the bacteria. The agar-solidified culture medium contained mineral salts, vitamins, 40 g l^–1 sucrose, 1 g l^–1 yeast extract and 0.05 mg l^–1 BA. Five clones, transformed with A281/pGA472, and 4 clones transformed with LBA4404/pBI121, were selected for proliferation by repetitive somatic embryogenesis, on media containing 100 mg l^–1 of kanamycin. The transformation of kanamycin-resistant clones was confirmed by assaying the activity of neomycin phosphotransferase II and/or -glucuronidase enzymes, and by the Southern blot analysis. It is suggested that the transformation/regeneration system based on somatic embryogenesis may be suitable for establishing transgenic alfalfa lines. Antitumor and antimetastatic activity of the immunoadjuvant peptidoglycan monomer PGM in mice bearing MCa mammary carcinoma

Summary The antitumor and antimetastatic activities of the water-soluble peptidoglycan monomer GlnNAc-Mur-NAc-L-Ala-D-iso-Gln-meso-diamminopimelic acid (-NH₂)-D-Ala-D-Ala (PGM), which has immunostimulant effects, have been evaluated in CBA mice bearing MCa mammary carcinoma. The antineoplastic effects of PGM depend strictly on the dosage and treatment schedule used. Though a significant inhibition of the primary tumor growth is observed over a wide range of dosage, only the IV administration of daily doses of 50 mg/kg/day on days 1, 5, 10, 15 inhibits spontaneous lung metastasis formation and in parallel prolongs the survival time of the treated mice. The magnitude of the antimetastatic effects of PGM depends on the degree of dissemination of the tumor, and is greater when the number of metastatic foci is low. Examination of the therapeutic potential of PGM in combination with surgery has further indicated that the timing of administration plays an important role in the overall effectiveness of this substance. A 5-day interval is necessary between two consecutive injections for the induction of significant increases of the survival times.     

Influence of maternal adrenalectomy on the ultrastructure of the adrenal gland in neonatal rats

Maternal adrenalectomy at 7 or 14 days of gestation produced increased cell necrosis within zona reticularis cells on the day of birth and at 24 or 48 h after birth. Small remnants or large portions of adrenocortical cells were present within macrophages. In otherwise normal adrenocortical cells, lipid droplets were incorporated within some mitochondria. Autophagocytosis of single mitochondria was observed within adrenocortical cells. Undoubtedly ultrastructural changes represent stimulation of adrenocortical cells in neonatal rats in response to maternal adrenalectomy.     

The effect of sodium on depolarization-induced calcium uptake and acetylcholine release by synaptosomes

The influence of external sodium concentration on potassium (depolarizing agent)-stimulated calcium uptake and Ca⁺-dependent acetylcholine release by rat cerebral cortex synaptosomes has been studied. It was found that increased sodium concentration decreases both the Ca²⁺ uptake and the acetylcholine release, whereas a low external sodium concentration is stimulatory.
