Aim Deep‐sea pelagic diversity is poorly understood. Local (SL) and regional (SR) ichthyonekton species richness are presented and analysed with respect to local and regional environmental factors, and biogeographical processes. Location Sixty‐six stations from the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent sector of the Southern Ocean, 65° N to 57° S. Methods Estimation of SL by means of rarefaction. Stepwise evaluation of SL and SR relationships by means of the second‐order corrected Akaike information criterion (AICc) after locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) and linear fitting, analysis of saturation effects by means of slopes of species accumulation curves (log–log plots). Results Latitudinal gradients were present for SL and SR, and were asymmetric between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Relatively low species richness was encountered for the Southern Ocean. Asymmetry at the regional level by means of higher SR was attributed to area effects in the South Atlantic. Log–log plots indicated saturation of local assemblages and dependence on environmental factors. SL was related to productivity; this relationship was hump‐shaped. SR was positively related to area size and negatively to seasonality of production. Biogeographical effects were indicated in that SR peaks coincided with overlap zones of boreal and tropical faunas as a consequence of historical faunal exchange processes. Main conclusions The stepwise approach allowed for distinction between effects of area size, productivity and biogeographical processes on diversity at local and regional scales. Productivity in particular is important in two ways. At the local scale, the link of productivity to SL is explained by a successional‐functional hypothesis of resource utilization, whereas the seasonality effect for SR reinforces the hypothesis of dependence of deep‐sea fishes on seasonality of production through changes of life‐history traits. The causes of low Antarctic faunal diversity remained unresolved.  相似文献

Bayesian flux balance analysis applied to a skeletal muscle metabolic model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this article, the steady state condition for the multi-compartment models for cellular metabolism is considered. The problem is to estimate the reaction and transport fluxes, as well as the concentrations in venous blood when the stoichiometry and bound constraints for the fluxes and the concentrations are given. The problem has been addressed previously by a number of authors, and optimization-based approaches as well as extreme pathway analysis have been proposed. These approaches are briefly discussed here. The main emphasis of this work is a Bayesian statistical approach to the flux balance analysis (FBA). We show how the bound constraints and optimality conditions such as maximizing the oxidative phosphorylation flux can be incorporated into the model in the Bayesian framework by proper construction of the prior densities. We propose an effective Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) scheme to explore the posterior densities, and compare the results with those obtained via the previously studied linear programming (LP) approach. The proposed methodology, which is applied here to a two-compartment model for skeletal muscle metabolism, can be extended to more complex models.  相似文献

We studied spatial variation of macroinvertebrate species richness in headwater streams at two spatial extents, within and across drainage systems, and assessed the relative importance of three groups of variables (local, landscape and regional) at each extent. We specifically asked whether the same variables proposed to control broad‐scale richness patterns of terrestrial organisms (temperature, topographic variability) are important determinants of species richness also in streams, or whether environmental factors effective at mainly local scales (in‐stream heterogeneity, potential productivity) constrain species richness in local communities. We used forward selection with two stopping criteria to identify the key environmental and spatial variables at each study extent. Eigenvector‐based spatial filtering was applied to evaluate spatial patterns in species richness, and variation partitioning was used to assess the amount of variation in richness attributable to purely environmental and spatial components. A prime regulator of richness variation at the bioregion extent was elevation range (increasing richness with higher topographic variability), whereas hydrological stability and temperature were unimportant. Water chemistry variables, particularly water color, exhibited strong spatially‐structured variation across drainage systems. Local environmental variables explained most of the variation in species richness at the drainage‐system extent, reflecting gradients in total phosphorus and water color (negative effect on richness). The importance of the pure spatial component was strongly region‐dependent, with a peak (60%) in one drainage system, suggesting the presence of unmeasured environmental factors. Our results emphasize the need for spatially‐explicit, regional studies to better understand geographical variation of freshwater biodiversity. Future studies need to relate species richness not only to local factors but also to broad‐scale climatic variables, recognizing the presence of spatially‐structured environmental variation.  相似文献

Background

Our objective was to examine whether gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or newborns'' high birthweight can be prevented by lifestyle counseling in pregnant women at high risk of GDM.

Method and Findings

We conducted a cluster-randomized trial, the NELLI study, in 14 municipalities in Finland, where 2,271 women were screened by oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 8–12 wk gestation. Euglycemic (n = 399) women with at least one GDM risk factor (body mass index [BMI] ≥25 kg/m2, glucose intolerance or newborn''s macrosomia (≥4,500 g) in any earlier pregnancy, family history of diabetes, age ≥40 y) were included. The intervention included individual intensified counseling on physical activity and diet and weight gain at five antenatal visits. Primary outcomes were incidence of GDM as assessed by OGTT (maternal outcome) and newborns'' birthweight adjusted for gestational age (neonatal outcome). Secondary outcomes were maternal weight gain and the need for insulin treatment during pregnancy. Adherence to the intervention was evaluated on the basis of changes in physical activity (weekly metabolic equivalent task (MET) minutes) and diet (intake of total fat, saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, saccharose, and fiber). Multilevel analyses took into account cluster, maternity clinic, and nurse level influences in addition to age, education, parity, and prepregnancy BMI. 15.8% (34/216) of women in the intervention group and 12.4% (22/179) in the usual care group developed GDM (absolute effect size 1.36, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.71–2.62, p = 0.36). Neonatal birthweight was lower in the intervention than in the usual care group (absolute effect size −133 g, 95% CI −231 to −35, p = 0.008) as was proportion of large-for-gestational-age (LGA) newborns (26/216, 12.1% versus 34/179, 19.7%, p = 0.042). Women in the intervention group increased their intake of dietary fiber (adjusted coefficient 1.83, 95% CI 0.30–3.25, p = 0.023) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (adjusted coefficient 0.37, 95% CI 0.16–0.57, p<0.001), decreased their intake of saturated fatty acids (adjusted coefficient −0.63, 95% CI −1.12 to −0.15, p = 0.01) and intake of saccharose (adjusted coefficient −0.83, 95% CI −1.55 to −0.11, p  =  0.023), and had a tendency to a smaller decrease in MET minutes/week for at least moderate intensity activity (adjusted coefficient 91, 95% CI −37 to 219, p = 0.17) than women in the usual care group. In subgroup analysis, adherent women in the intervention group (n = 55/229) had decreased risk of GDM (27.3% versus 33.0%, p = 0.43) and LGA newborns (7.3% versus 19.5%, p = 0.03) compared to women in the usual care group.

Conclusions

The intervention was effective in controlling birthweight of the newborns, but failed to have an effect on maternal GDM.

Masting, the intermittent production of large crops of flowers by a plant population, is a common feature among trees in boreal and temperate forests. The pollen of many broadleaved trees causes allergic diseases, which are major causes of increasing health-care costs in industrialised countries. As the prevalence and severity of allergic diseases are connected with the concentrations of airborne pollen, an universal model predicting the intensity of the coming flowering would be a valuable tool for pollen information services, and ultimately for allergic people and allergologists. We investigated whether a resource budget model created in Japan explains the fluctuations in the annual pollen sums of Betula-species in north European data sets (10–12 years at 4 sites, 20 years at 10 sites). Using the shorter data sets, the model explained 76–92% of the annual fluctuations at five study sites. Using the 20-year data set, the percentage for southern Finland was much lower, only 48%, compared with the 85% of the 12-year data set. The annual pollen sums have been higher during the 1990s than in the 1980s, which may explain the ineffectiveness of the model, while applied to the 20-year data set. Our results support the resource budget model: the masting of birch species is regulated by weather factors together with the system of resource allocation among years. The model can serve pollen information service. However, only the 10 most recent years should be used to avoid interference from trends in changing vegetation and/or climate.  相似文献

Phosphatidylinositol (PI) is a ubiquitous membrane lipid in eukaryotes. It is becoming increasingly obvious that PI and its metabolites play a myriad of very diverse roles in eukaryotic cells. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae PIS1 gene is essential and encodes PI synthase, which is required for the synthesis of PI. Recently, PIS1 expression was found to be regulated in response to carbon source and oxygen availability. It is particularly significant that the promoter elements required for these responses are conserved evolutionarily throughout the Saccharomyces genus. In addition, several genome-wide strategies coupled with more traditional screens suggest that several other factors regulate PIS1 expression. The impact of regulating PIS1 expression on PI synthesis will be discussed along with the possible role(s) that this may have on diseases such as cancer.  相似文献
