The vegetation of small granitic rock outcrops (geomorphologically small-sized inselbergs) which do not reach the canopy was studied in the Taı rain forest (southwestern Ivory Coast) under aspects of species diversity and phytogeographical affinities. Rock outcrops form edaphically arid (due to absent or very sparse soil cover) and microclimatologically xeric (i.e. low air humidity, temperature regularly exceeding 50°C) islands with cryptogamic crusts, succulents and poikilohydric vascular plants as characteristic elements of their vegetation which differs totally from the surrounding forest. Altogether sixty-six species of vascular plants out of twenty-nine families occur, the number of species correlates positively with inselberg size. Compared with large inselbergs the microclimatic attributes of small-sized rock outcrops are less pronounced. This is accompanied by a decrease of typical inselberg taxa (i.e. species mainly occurring on inselbergs). Low beta diversity between inselbergs indicates deterministic influences as important regulators of species composition. Annual Poaceae and Cyperaceae are richly represented. It can be hypothesized that inselbergs may represent natural growing sites of widely distributed tropical weeds today. Inselbergs might provide habitat resources for savanna elements in rain forest zones.  相似文献

 Bispecific monoclonal antibodies (bi-mAb), directed against a tumor-associated antigen and the CD3 or CD28 antigen on T lymphocytes, induce activation of resting T lymphocytes and target-specific tumor cell lysis. We now show that both necrosis and apoptosis contribute to T-cell-mediated tumor cell destruction. Even though T cells up-regulate FAS/APO-1 expression upon bi-mAb stimulation, FAS/APO-1-mediated apoptosis does not contribute to bi-mAb-mediated destruction of Hodgkin’s cells. CD8+ lymphocytes were the most potent effectors of bi-mAb-mediated cytotoxicity and had the highest levels of mRNA coding for perforin and granzyme A and B. Ca2+-complexing agents, which abrogate perforin activity, led to decreased levels of necrosis, while inhibition of granzyme activity in effector or target cells had a similar effect on apoptosis. Granzyme-mediated apoptosis critically dependent on the proliferative state of the target cells, while perforin-induced necrosis was not cell-cycle-dependent. Our results underline the importance of the expression levels of perforin and granzymes in the effector T cells and of the proliferative state of the target cells in bi-mAb-mediated apoptosis and necrosis of tumor cells. Mechanical clearance of inhaled dust particles and microorganisms is an important part of the innate defense mechanisms of mammalian airways. Airway epithelia are composed of various cell types with different degrees of cell polarity. Serous cells regulate composition and volume of luminal periciliary fluid and mucus. Autocrine, paracrine, or neuronal messengers determine the secretory and reabsorptive rates of electrolytes and water via cAMP-or inositol triphosphate/calcium-mediated intracellular signals. Comparison of the expression of calcium-mobilizing receptor types (G protein-coupled-, growth factor-, and cytokine receptors) in two types of human immortalized airway epithelial cells (S9, 16HBE14o-) revealed that receptor populations were qualitatively and quantitatively different in the two cell types. Sustained calcium signals were elicited by activation of purinergic receptors in 16HBE14o-cells or muscarinic acetylcholine or histamine receptors in S9 cells. These G protein-coupled receptors mobilized calcium from intracellular stores and activated capacitative calcium influx. The experimental cells may represent different types of original airway epithelial cells and seem to be suited as model cells to study cell signaling and protein expression during interaction with pathogens or their secretory products (e.g., virulence factors).  相似文献

We investigate and quantify the effects of pH and salt concentration on the charge regulation of the bacteriophage PP7 capsid. These effects are found to be extremely important and substantial, introducing qualitative changes in the charge state of the capsid such as a transition from net-positive to net-negative charge depending on the solution pH. The overall charge of the virus capsid arises as a consequence of a complicated balance with the chemical dissociation equilibrium of the amino acids and the electrostatic interaction between them, and the translational entropy of the mobile solution ions, i.e., counterion release. We show that to properly describe and predict the charging equilibrium of viral capsids in general, one needs to include molecular details as exemplified by the acid-base equilibrium of the detailed distribution of amino acids in the proteinaceous capsid shell.  相似文献

Post-glacial survival, potential migration routes, genetic diversity and phylogeography of the boreal moss species Rhytidium rugosum have been studied. This species is considered to be one of glacial relics of the wide but scattered Holarctic range. According to molecular data sampling from the selected European, American and Asian populations high genetic diversity of this species is present, even if this species is mostly sterile and produced sex organs extremely rarely and spread mostly asexually. Analysing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA, it can be concluded that the populations of this species survived glaciations in various places in Europe and settled and re-settled present range space in various times from various refuges.  相似文献
